it'll never work out

Really, they'll never work out, ever.

So maybe they should never even try.

They're both heroes and they have that hero complex to go along with it. Alice Longbottom and James Potter- both legends among Hogwarts students, plus all the girls think that James Potter is good-looking. Not to mention she's two years older. But there's something there, they can both tell.

A shared glance in the hallway, a smile in the Gryffindor common room. They're both so powerful and everyone knows it.

(And really, if they got together, they'd be the power couple, ruling the school)

Brown eyes meet hazel in the library, and he pulls her behind the bookshelf, smiling widely.

"What are you doing, Potter?" Alice hisses in a frenzied whisper. "We're prohibited from being back here…"

"But hey, we're Gryffindors, right?" James reminds her. "Since when have we ever followed the rules?"

"Never," She admits. "But I told Frank I'd meet him after lunch…."

"I'll let you go, don't worry," James tells her firmly. "But before you go…"

He plants his lips on hers, wishing for more power, because really, they would be the power couple. And he doesn't care about the repercussions- he's a bit of a player, in case you couldn't tell. The kiss is filled with a battle for power and all of the things he's always wished for. But she pulls away quickly, eyes wide with horror and some hidden emotion. "James Potter! You just kissed me, you prick! How could you? I have Frank, and you have Lily!"

"I know," James hangs his head in shame, realising that the decision was a stupid one in hindsight. "I shouldn't have done it."

"How about we never mention it again?" Alice offers, extending her hand as if to seal the deal. Because, really, she's always been no play all business like that.

"Fine with me, definitely," James agrees, reaching out and shaking her hand, ignoring the chills that run down his spine along with it.

She lets go, staring at him incredulously before saying, "I'm going to meet Frank. I'll see you later, James."

As she skips away, he curses under his breath.

But really, he's perfect with Lily Evans, and she with Frank Longbottom, so they would never work out.

Many years later, when their sons Neville Longbottom and Harry Potter are born just days apart, he tries to pretend that he doesn't still remember.
