LbN: Takes place in the "Demigod" universe, about two years after "Blessings".
Close Encounters of the Olympian Kind
Clarisse took her sword from the monster's neck and sighed. She was tired, but unhurt. Quickly, she made her way out of the alley and down the road. At two a.m. there weren't many places open, but she did know of one. She'd parked her car next to the 24 hour Chinese food place, but had been chased a block and a half by a harpy. Still battle tense, she searched the skies for any more monsters. "Who did I piss off?" she wondered aloud.
"It's not that you pissed me off, per se. This is really just for fun."
Clarisse whipped around and saw the queen of the gods walking toward her. "Er…hello," she said.
"Calm down, I'm not here to kill you."
"Isn't that what you just tried to do?"
"Oh no," Hera said, shaking her head. "She was under direct orders not to kill you in fact. Like I said, just for entertainment."
"Great." When she realized that the goddess intended to follow her for a while, she picked up the conversation again. "And two weeks ago when I left Camp to find mint stuffed Oreos? The minotaur?"
"And last week, when I had to find a barbeque place? The sea serpent?"
"Technically Poseidon's, but I borrowed him."
"I've got to stop giving in to Annabeth's early morning cravings…." Clarisse muttered
Hera laughed. "I bet you mean that in more ways than one."
True. "Not to sound like a five year old, but why are you picking on me?"
"Because you're such an easy target. Plus, Artemis and Eileithyia didn't include me in this whole pregnancy blessing plan, so I had to vent my frustration somehow. Though, I can't be too upset, seeing as you lived up to my lofty expectations."
"Do I even want to know?"
"I figured, if anyone could get another girl pregnant, it would be you."
Clarisse opened her mouth to reply, found she didn't know how, and closed it again.
"Would you like me to stop picking on you?" Hera asked with a smile.
"What's it going to cost me?"
"Your lovely fiancé—"
"She's pregnant. She can't have sex right now," Clarisse grumbled
"If that was what I wanted, trust me, there would be a way. Luckily for you, I have no designs on Annabeth's virtue—at the moment. What I was going to say is that Annabeth is going to have a baby girl. I want her to be named for me in some form. Bonus points, as you children say, if she lives in my cabin at Camp."
Clarisse stared at her for a moment, almost running into a parking meter. "What's the catch?"
"There isn't, in fact. Your child will not be a demigod, as she has no godly parents. However, she will be special. The child of two Blessed demigods is bound to be different. Since she has no cabin, and I have no heroes, the situation makes sense."
Clarisse put her hand on the door of Mike O'Brannigan's Chinese Takeout and said, "I'll have to talk to Annabeth."
"Quite so," Hera said. "I expect your answer in three days."
The goddess disappeared, and Clarisse entered the small shop.
Annabeth was up killing zombie Nazis on the Xbox when Clarisse got back. "Hey! I was starting to worry that you'd been attacked again."
"I was, but that wasn't what took me so long," Clarisse said, handing Annabeth her carton of lo mein. "You'll never guess who I ran into…."
