Disclaimer: I don't own Young Justice, if I did, Robin would be in "Denial"
Author's Note: takes place in the beginning on "denial" which Robin was absent from D': I am suffering from Robin withdraws, see rant at bottom for more information.
ANOTHER NOTE: Artemis is called Artemis. Miss Martian, and Kid Flash are called M'gann and Wally because they are in CIVILIAN clothing. Aqualad and Superboy are not so they go by those names.
Also special thanks to lexluxia111 for reading this ahead of time and giving me INSANE ideas for the ending xD (Don't worry I didn't use them)
It was a usual day at Mount Justice - well almost, Robin was absent. Aqualad and Superboy were sparring while M'gann and Artemis were talking about boys on the sidelines. Wally was leaning up against a support beam eating yet another hot dog.
"Black Canary taught me that," said Superboy triumphantly as he had just beaten Aqualad.
Above them the roof door opened and Red Tornado spun into the room. Tossing his wrapper aside, Wally sped over to where their hero-in-residence just landed.
"Do you have a mission for us?" Wally asked as he came to a stop in front of the machine.
"Mission assignments are the Batman's responsibly," Red Tornado said in his mechanical monotone voice.
"Yeah well the Batman is with the Robin," Wally said pointing symbolically over his shoulder, "Doing the Dynamic Duo thing in Gotham."
"Then perhaps you would like to see how they are doing," Red Tornado said, "It can possibly help you understand your youngest teammate."
"We don't see much of what he usually does," said M'gann thoughtfully, "Robin is not usually covert."
"Yeah," said Artemis in agreement, "I've been on only one mission with you guys and he wasn't there for the greater majority of it."
"He was busy catching his guy," said Wally, still upset that Cheshire got away.
"He didn't catch anyone," Artemis shot at him, "he just destroyed the Infiltrators."
"Same Difference!" Wally said, determined to defend his best friend from the raff of the newbie.
"So we are in agreement then," Red Tornado said determined to stop their pointless argument, "Just let me access the Gotham City street cameras." Feel my
He turned away from the team and began to type on the holographic keyboard. Twenty boxes sported in each of the three holographic screens, each filled with a different camera, and an arrow in the bottom corner meaning that there were more pages.
"I don't see them," Superboy said glancing over each box.
"Gotham is a huge city, over ten million people live there. It is also one of the most crime infested cities in America," Said Red Tornado, "they have over ten thousand cameras throughout the city."
"Then how are we going to find them?" asked Aqualad just as calmly as always.
"The Batman is in the park in the center of the city," replied Red Tornado.
"How do you know?" Wally asked.
"There is an alert out," Red Tornado said as he pulled it up, "According to it, the Joker is attacking there."
Wally and Aqualad gasped and the others looked at them in confusion.
"Gotham city is known for its psychotic villains. They usually break out of the overly populated asylum. The Joker, is the most insane of all." Aqualad explained, a little of his calmness leaving him, "He cannot stop smiling, he enjoys killing and takes it like a game. Mass murders, terrorism, anything for a laugh. He has a partner, his wife Harley, who is also insane. He has made it his life's goal to make Batman laugh, to play his game. But he has never been successful."
"Yeah he's pretty crazy," Wally agreed eating a banana which he had just got, "to say the least."
"As much as I approve of the learning going on here," said Red Tornado, "I have access the five cameras overlooking the park."
Red Tornado zoomed in on the five. The Joker was on top of a large rock and to the right of him were several hostages tied up and guarded by clown masked goons.
The Joker appeared to be talking to the sky. Then Batman jumped down onto one of the picnic tables, and glared up at the Joker.
"Can we hear what they are saying?" Superboy asked, not quite sure what to make of the scene before him.
"Unfortunately no," Red Tornado responded, searching the different angles for Robin, "The cameras do not record sound, due to the vast majority of them."
"There's Robin," M'gann said pointing to a corner of the screen, "He is freeing the hostages."
The rest of the team found where she was pointing. Robin had taken out the guards quiet enough for the Joker not to notice. He pulled out a birdirang and looked to the central knot thy held each hostage together.
His mask's eye holes grew wide. He shouted to Batman who was fighting the Joker. The Joker grinned at Robin and tried to get to him but Batman was keeping him busy.
"Where is Harley?" Aqualad asked looking around the screen.
"She I believe is still locked up in Arkham Asylum." Red Tornado said changing to a different view to try and see what had freaked Robin out.
They got a good enough angle but the shadows and the hostages made it hard to see exactly.
"Can you zoom in and clear it up?" Wally asked getting closer.
Red Tornado did not respond he just did what Wally asked. The shadows cast upon it made it hard to see exactly what it was, but it was good enough. There was a mess of green, blue, yellow, and red lines. There was a little flashing red light and a clock that read '4:02', and it was going backwards like a timer.
"BOMB!" Artemis and Wally said together, to their dislike.
"It looks like the wires are wrapped in with the rope, so if Robin were to cut the hostages free the bomb would go off." Aqualad explained, starting to worry.
"Can I go run over there and help him?" Wally asked.
"Absolutely not," Red Tornado said as he turned around to face the speedster, "The Batman doesn't like to have other heroes outside of the Bat family in Gotham. I also don't think Robin would appreciate it either, because he seems to have things under control."
"Under control?" Wally asked in disbelief. He wasn't bashing his best friend but he couldn't see how even the bomb squad could handle that mess.
Trees were on fire, people running away, crying, screaming, and panicking. Creepy bloody smiles were drawn on buildings and in the ground. How is that Unser control?
"Yes," Red Tornado pressed, "see?"
Wally looked up. Somehow Robin freed four of the five hostages from there bounds without setting the bomb off.
He just released the final one who ran out of there as fast as his stubby legs could carry him. Robin then proceeded to deactivate the bomb, which had about one and a half minutes left. Robin analyzes carefully but his head snapped up to a sound that the team could not hear.
The Joker had gotten away from Batman, who was slowly stirring in the grass. The Joker pointed blare round gun down at the still boy. He was saying things that looked like 'it was nice knowing ya'.
"No, no, no, no," M'gann said over and over again as she watched the crazed clown pull the trigger, "No!" she shouted, this time joined in by everyone else.
Robin was still there though, in the same position, unharmed. A little stick with flag that had 'BANG' written on it was hanging off the end had come out of the gun.
"Phew," said M'gann wiping her brow, then she noticed the troubled look on Robin's face, "Wha-?"
Before she could finish the Joker pulled the trigger once again, but the little dart did not shoot out at Robin like expected, instead a dark green fog burst out and intoxicated Robin.
Robin started to laugh uncontrollably; he was laughing so hard that it looked painful.
Batman was getting to is feet, and the Joker dashed toward him just in time for the bomb just went off.
"Robin!" they all yelled, they wanted to go to Gotham and rip the Joker to shreds, to yell at Batman for being unable to do anything. Angry at themselves that they just sat back and watched as their friend was kil-
"Look!" Artemis said running closer and pointing to a corner of the screen.
Robin lay in a far patch of scorched grass. He was raggedly cut, scraped, bruised and burnt. He was bleeding in places and one of his eyes was shut tight with pain. His laughter looks even more painful and deadly than before.
Batman rushes toward him and knelt down next to him. He had already defeated the Joker who was currently being placed into a prison transport vehicle. Batman held the boy down as he pulled out an orange syringe and jabbed the boy in the leg.
"What is he doing?" Aqualad asked, gravely.
"I believe he is administering the antidote to the Joker's laughing gas." Red Tornado said, not worries at all, "That stuff is deadly if in the system for too long."
Robin stopped thrashing around as was now breathing very heavily. Batman helped him up but Robin could not support himself. Batman helped him limp to the Batmobile and they sped off, without giving a word to press or police.
The team did not know what to say; whether it was because of the abrupt departure or the fact that their youngest member went through on a regular basis.
Wally and Aqualad never faced things like that in their recent years of being vigilantes, and Robin had been going through things like that since he was nine years old, and it never got to him. If they had to deal with those psychopaths everyday they would probably turn into a psychopath themselves.
"Wha-wh-?" M'gann stammered, at a loss for words.
"WHAT THE HELL?" Wally shouted what everyone was thinking, "I don't get it! How can he handle all that and-and-and-"
"Robin goes through a lot of hard things," Red Tornado said turning off the camera feeds, "I have insensate from my understanding of human interaction that he uses his immature persona to either hide or disregard how he is feeling."
"We are going to have a talk with him when he comes back," said Aqualad crossing his arms.
"I also believe that that is unwise," said Red Tornado searching for a different file, "then he would know you were spying on him."
"Spying? Spying? We were doing what you told us to do!" Superboy said angrily, clenching his fists.
"Correction," said Red Tornado, "I suggested it. Also, I never said that the Batman or Robin would approve or appreciate it."
"So what you're saying is..." Artemis said confused.
"That let's keep this or little secret," Red Tornado said to a surprised team, "and now I actually do have mission for you."
As Red Tornado told them about their mission to find Nelson, they were only half there. Their thoughts strayed to Robin and all that he did. How much he went through almost every day. Their new insight on what their youngest, yet most experienced, went through on a regular basis.
It almost seemed as though that boy they watched through street cameras was an weirdly different person then the Robin they knew.
As Red Tornado explained the mission more, the thoughts and worries about Robin dwindled. They knew he would be fine, he always was.
And as they boarded the bio-ship the worries died away. They let the thoughts drift away till they were gone, but kept the feeling of them. They focused on the mission at hand, just as their little bid would do if he were there kicking magical-ass with them.
Red Tornado you clevea pieace of meta. ;D
ROBIN IS BAMF!
The ending I'm iffy about cause it sounds like "The young heros learned that violence does not solve the problems of who ate whose jell-o..." or something like that. But other than that I am really happy with this.
