Some say the world will end in fire,
Some say in ice.
From what I've tasted of desire
I hold with those who favor fire.
But if it had to perish twice,
I think I know enough of hate
To say that for destruction ice
Is also great
And would suffice.
A lot of religions theorized how the world would end. Some assumed in chaos, some assumed the sins of the people of earth would result in a fiery hell sprouting on earth, others thought the world would collapse upon itself. I don't think anyone would've guessed it would've ended over a stupid argument between two gods.
It was the battle of the Greeks/Romans against the Egyptians. Why you ask? Because Carter and Sadie mistakenly mistook Thoth for Hermes which ended up in an argument of who was better.
Hermes was enraged when Thoth called him a liar and a cheat. Thoth was peeved when Hermes called him a stupid baboon.
After that all Underworld and Land of the Dead broke loose. Demigods, both Roman and Greek began to attack the Egyptian magicians. Magicians retaliated and burned down their shrines.
However it wasn't until the demigods destroyed the Pyramids of Giza beyond a repair spell that both sides began to become more serious.
I remember sitting in the House of Life with the others as Zia Rashad and Carter were planning our next attack when we heard a loud boom and the ceiling started to fall on top of us. Some of didn't make it out.
After that the 20-year battles broke out. Both of our populations diminished. Humans still couldn't see through the Mist to understand why spontaneous explosions or why the sky was a fiery red. If they could, I assume they would've jumped off a cliff in fear.
Both the Egyptian gods and Greek/Roman gods assumed their godly forms. Many mortals who would walk by would vaporize instantly on the spot at the site. Not that there were any mortals left. About all of the United States was destroyed, Olympus which had been sitting proudly on top of the Empire State building was in rubbles after an attack on it 12-years ago. Europe was a land of fire, monsters were everywhere.
30 years have passed since the beginning and I lay here dying reminiscing about everything that has occurred.
"Why did this happen?" I asked my friend Carter as we both sat on the broken ground looking up into the sky where a battle between Ra and Zeus was taking place. It was an amazing site. Fire attacks countering lightning attacks. A grand finale for the very end.
Carter was silent, he had changed ever since his sister and Zia died 12-years before during the siege on Olympus.
"All of this over a stupid mistake huh?" I asked him again.
We both looked away from the sky as Ra and Zeus went flying in opposite directions.
"I guess this is it," Carter said softly, "They're both gone, everyone is gone. As we lay dying here we will be gone too."
"It's like that riddle. If a tree falls in an empty forest does it make a sound?" I said to him, I could feel my body slipping into darkness, "Will anyone hear us?"
Just something I thought of during math class…
