Prompt #247 from tamingthemuse – Mali

Giles got word that there was a girl in Mali, Africa who could be a slayer. Since Xander had already been to Africa, Giles decided he was the best one to go. This time when Xander was sent to Africa he wasn't alone. When Spike had come back into the Scooby's lives he had been paired up with Xander. Giles claimed it wasn't safe for Xander to go out to the unknown alone. Xander grumbled that Giles didn't seem to have a problem with it last year. It's not that Xander minded Spike coming along. He welcomed it. They had become close friends… maybe even a little more though Xander wasn't exactly sure.

"Have you ever been to Mali?" Xander asked. Ever since Giles had told them where they were headed Spike had been unusually quiet.

"I have." Spike said, his voice low. He had the window seat on the red eye. He won the coin toss.

Xander waited patiently for the story. Spike always had a story. When Spike remained silent Xander turned to look at Spike who was staring out of the window. "Well?" Spike still didn't answer him so Xander shoulder bumped him. "Come on, Spike. Share a story with your buddy. I'm fucking bored." There was another nudge.

"Mali is where I went to get my soul," Spike answered. He wouldn't look at Xander. "Just a lot of memories flashing through my brain is all."

Xander could understand that. Spike went to get his soul for love. He never signed on for The First taking over his mind having him kill people when all he wanted to do was be a better person… vampire. "Why did you come? Giles would have understood… well maybe not but still you didn't have to come."

"And let you go alone?" Spike asked with a snort. "Or worse have one of the little slayers come with you?"

Spike had a point with the slayers. They always wanted to hear war stories and there were a lot of days where he hated thinking about Sunnydale. He was trying to live in the now and not the past. Spike seemed to understand that. "My hero. I appreciate you saving me from their gossip. Talking about Sunnydale isn't really on the top of my priority list."

"Agreed, too many bloody memories, most of them bad," Spike replied. He turned to look at Xander. "Watcher's cheap; he couldn't get us in first class. I feel like I'm in a sardine can."

Good opening for a change in subject and some good old fashioned flirting from Xander. "How about when we get to our 'reasonably priced' motel I'll give you a full body massage?" Oh and up went the eyebrow.

"Full body massage, eh?" Spike asked, his interest peaked. "Don't suppose a happy ending will be included?" Spike decided to push just to see how far Xander would go before backing down. This was way more fun that brooding.

"We'll see how it goes," Xander said but he had a grin that told Spike that it would most definitely have a happy ending. Maybe if he was lucky Spike would have multiple happy endings.

The End
