Disclaimer- I don't own Doctor Who.

A/N- this is for Carly, for telling me to write it, keeping me company all night, and pretty much refusing to sleep until she read it, so thanks, you're awesome. :)

A/NII- Written for a prompt on the TARDIS! Check it out!

The Doctor looked around in panic, but all around him there was nothing but fire and burning. And pain. So much pain. Suddenly the Doctor was feeling as though he was suffocating. No, he couldn't be here. It wasn't possible! He swung his head around in every direction looking for a way out.

And that's when he saw her.

She was just standing there. Still. As the flames grew so close that he could see them licking at the ground not five metres away from her. "Rose!" he called out, sounding desperate even to his own ears. But it was no use. She just stood there as if she hadn't heard him.

He started running towards her.

He could have sworn he heard her calling him, but ignoring it, he kept running.

It sounded more urgent this time, but still he ignored it.

That one sounded freakishly like Jackie Tyler. And that one made him stop running…

And then he woke up.

He was lying under the TARDIS consol, where he must have fallen asleep. Which was very rare, but that wasn't what he was focusing on at that moment. Rose was kneeling next to him, shaking him gently and calling his name with a very scared look on her face. That was his focus. When he gave her a quizzical look, she explained, "You were yellin'." He nodded and she continued, "was it the War?" she asked. She wasn't accusing him or asking him out of pity. She was just asking. Simple as that.

Taking his silence as a confirmation, she asked shyly, "Do you regret it? I mean I know you do, but-" Rose started but was cut off by the Doctors reply.

"I did what I had to do Rose," he replied his voice void of emotion, avoiding the question, something that Rose didn't fail to notice.

"Then that's what you've gotta remember. You did what you had to do." Rose tried to comfort him, just like he did when she had nightmares.

The Doctor turned to her and quirked an eyebrow, despite the circumstances, he was apparently unable to resist teasing her. "Very wise Rose Tyler."

"Yeah, I don't know where that came from, but it still stands," she replied. "I'm goin' to make us some tea, yeah?" Rose said standing up and unnecessarily brushing herself off.

The Doctor just nodded. He had one thought on his mind: Would he ever be able to get past his past? Because if he could only let go of the past, he might have a future. Or at least a chance at one, maybe even a chance with Rose. Whoa, where'd that come from? Rose was bringing out a side of him that he didn't know he still had. A side of him that he'd been hiding since the Time War. And he had to admit- it felt good. But he was also scared of it. Scared that he'd let her in and with a crash, a bang, and a broken heart (or three), it would all fall apart.

But then another thought occurred to him: Maybe, just maybe, it would be worth it.

A/N- R and R guys!

And please keep in mind that I was writing this at a stupid hour this mornig when I couldn't sleep.
