AN: I have a confession to make: I am a reformed drabble-hater. Okay, so the sentiment wasn't quite as strong as "hate," but I really didn't like drabbles. A number of very talented authors (who write wonderful fic in addition to drabbles) have since shown me the error of my ways. Many thanks to those whose writing has inspired me to continue – VO1, charliechaplin2, lovelylytton, Lilian, Merry Faerie, and many others !

Title: Playing Favorites

Description: Endymion reveals his favorite Shitennou.

Universe: Silver Millennium

It was like having children – you weren't supposed to have favorites.

But Endymion did, and they knew it.

Kunzite was his favorite when he wanted to do something foolish but his father wouldn't let him, because Kunzite could make the most unreasonable requests seem reasonable and did – as long as he thought Endymion wouldn't come to undue harm.

Jadeite was his favorite when he needed a partner in crime to pull a prank on Kunzite and someone else to pin it on when he was found out.

Nephrite was his favorite when he needed to sneak out of the castle because the stars could tell him where everyone was. Also when he needed a drinking partner, because Nephrite was always sober enough to get him back to his bed at the end of the night.

Zoisite was his favorite when he hadn't read a council report and didn't want to get the stink eye from his father.

[Serenity: What?

Endymion: Oh, all right – he's also good for making me feel better about my archery skills.

Serenity: But Zoisite always outshoots you.

Endymion: Yes, but whenever he starts bragging about it, Kunzite always pounds him into the ground.]

It was like having children – you weren't supposed to have favorites.

But Endymion did, and they knew it.

Zoisite was his favorite for showing him that asking the right questions can be better than knowing the right answers, and that the key to strength is asking the hardest ones of yourself.

Nephrite was his favorite for showing him that being kind doesn't make you any less of a man.

Jadeite was his favorite for being the first to make him realize that it was their duty to guard him, but it wasn't duty that made them spend their leisure time with him.

Kunzite was his favorite for telling him he would be a good king, and not even needing words to do it.

Maybe it wasn't fair to play favorites – but sometimes, Endymion just couldn't help himself.
