A/N: Okay…I lied. I said that my next one-shot would be happy because my recent ones have been pretty sad and yet… I wrote this instead. But I have a reason for it! Last night before bed, I was looking at Klaine fan art (because I'm such a dork) and I came across this one by Kiwa007 on Deviantart. It was really sad and heart-breaking and… anyway, I had a dream about it that night! I kid you not. As cheesy and cliché as it sounds, I had a dream about this one-shot and it was inspired by that fan art picture. So I decided to write it all out before I forgot it. And here it is! It goes with the topic "Hurt". Enjoy!
Challenge #4: Hurt
Kurt could handle bullying. He had been subjected to it for as long as he could remember. Kurt knew that going back to McKinley would come with repercussions, but he never expected this.
There was only so much bullying Kurt could take.
The halls of McKinley were vacant after school and only the Glee club rehearsed as late as five o'clock. Everyone else had said their goodbyes and gone home—even Mr. Schue had left the school already. Teary eyed, Kurt stood motionless in the dark hallway. His glossy blue eyes were fixated on the large, red spray-painted letters that spelled "FAG" across the locker before him—his locker.
Usually, Kurt brushed these kinds of incidences off—he knew that a majority of his peers were simply ignorant and immature. But seeing that ugly word publically displayed across his locker…Kurt couldn't help but breakdown. He let the leather strap of his school bag slide off his shoulder and fall to the floor beside him. His muscles refused to budge. All he could do was stare and let the word resonate through his skull like a pounding drum.
Tears began to flow freely down Kurt's face and coat his long lashes. There was a painful lump sitting in Kurt's throat, prompting him to release a heart-wrenching sob that echoed through the hall. He could no longer support himself; slowly, he crouched down on his knees and buried his face in his hands. This was too much.
A voice that Kurt swore sounded like a guardian angel broke the silence. The small brunette looked over his shoulder to see Blaine standing in the hall, wearing his Dalton blazer and a concerned expression. His hair was slightly wind-blown and he was breathing heavy as if he had just finished running. Kurt stood quickly and brushed off his pants.
"B-Blaine," Kurt attempted to smile, hoping to convince the dark haired boy that everything was fine. "What are you doing here?"
But Blaine couldn't be fooled that easily. He took one look at Kurt's tear stained cheeks and felt a rush of protectiveness that couldn't be denied.
"I was waiting for you in the parking lot—I wanted to see if you wanted to grab some dinner or something after rehearsal," Blaine took a step closer, still with worried eyes. "But when you didn't come out with the others, I came looking for you."
"Dinner sounds great," Kurt replied a little too quickly, his voice wavering. Blaine ignored this comment and briskly walked up to Kurt so that he could clearly see the tears that were shamelessly pouring down his face.
"What's wrong, Kurt? Why are you crying?" Blaine asked gently. Kurt sniffled softly and looked up at Blaine, blinking his scared, dewy eyes. His cheeks were slightly flushed from crying and his lips were pouty and swollen. Even in this state, Blaine couldn't help but notice how utterly adorable Kurt looked.
"It's n-nothing," Kurt looked down and cleared his throat daintily. "Let's just get out of here."
Kurt attempted to walk away, but Blaine grabbed his upper arm with a grip that was somehow both tender and forceful. The Dalton student shook his head defiantly. "No, not until you—"
A flash of red caught Blaine's eye. It stood out against the green of the lockers, causing him to focus on the messy scrawl that was painted across one of them. Curious, Blaine dropped his grasp on Kurt's arm and took a step forward to get a closer look. Kurt stood still and closed his eyes, feeling more tears well up in them. He didn't want Blaine to find out about this.
The silence that followed was almost painful. The only sounds Kurt could hear were Blaine's rhythmic breathing and his own occasional sniffle. Blaine stood frozen like Kurt had earlier, registering exactly what he was seeing. After releasing a long breath, he turned around.
"Kurt," He nearly whispered. The younger boy didn't want to turn around, but he forced himself to obey. He stared at Blaine with the same teary eyes as before. Kurt was surprised to see Blaine's eyes begin to form tears even though none of them fell down his face. Before he knew it, Blaine was walking back and wrapping him in his arms. Kurt quickly reciprocated the embrace and buried his face in Blaine's blazer, unable to hold in his sobs any longer. He wasn't sure how long the two of them stayed like that, but Kurt felt like forever wouldn't be long enough. He felt safe in Blaine's arms. Finally, Blaine pulled away, but kept his hands on Kurt's shoulders so that he remained close. Kurt inhaled a shuddering breath, and his lip quivered uneasily.
"Whoever did this is a coward," Blaine told him pointedly. "They have no right to do this to you."
Kurt nodded slowly and swallowed hard. "That's what I keep telling myself…but it's getting harder and harder for me to believe it."
Blaine's eyes seemed to become stony and focused. His gaze burned a hole through Kurt's own eyes, and he could feel the brunette's muscles tense. "Kurt, you can't let this get to you. You are so much stronger than I am."
Kurt's mouth parted slightly, and he blinked twice in wonder. Blaine's words resonated through his mind like an echo.
"The way you handled yourself at prom…" Blaine cracked a reminiscent smile and shook his head slightly. "You inspire me, Kurt. You inspire me to stand up for myself and be proud of who I am no matter what anyone else says or does."
Kurt inhaled another uneasy breath; he could feel more tears begin to form at the corners of his eyes.
Blaine finally broke his persistent gaze by looking at the floor, sighing as if he were about to admit something shameful. "I was really hurting inside before I met you, Kurt. I hated myself for being a coward and running away from the bullies at my old school. I should have stood my ground."
Tears slowly began to travel down Kurt's cheeks, and the younger boy lightly bit his lower lip to keep from sobbing. Blaine's own eyes sparkled unnaturally, tears threatening to fall.
"I came to Dalton with a new perspective—if I acted like I was confident then people would never suspect how I really felt…and how scared I was."
Blaine instantly backtracked once his words left his mouth. His eyes widened and he grabbed Kurt's hands, giving them a soft squeeze. "Not that I'm ashamed of being gay, but I just wanted to fit in…feel like an insider for once."
Blaine shuffled his feet back and forth nervously as he opened his mouth to speak again. "But you showed me that it doesn't matter what I am—an outcast, popular, gay, or straight. I just have to be me and own it."
Blaine scowled and motioned toward the vandalized locker. "And these jerks are just intimidated by your self-confidence."
Kurt attempted to chuckle, but it came out as a pained whimper instead. He wiped away his tears with the back of his hand. Blaine returned to Kurt's gaze, grabbing his hands once again and rubbing them soothingly with his thumbs.
"So don't let this get to you, Kurt. I know it hurts now, but your courage is amazing. Things will turn around," Blaine released a sardonic laugh and briefly looked away as if he were speaking only to himself. "I wish I could take my own advice better than I can give it."
Kurt couldn't hold it in any longer. He broke down into another fit of sobs, pulling his hands away from Blaine so that he could cover his mouth. Blaine pulled him in for another embrace, letting his arms wrap around Kurt's delicate shoulders. He rubbed his back gently as Kurt cried into Blaine's shoulder.
"You're perfect just the way you are, Kurt," Blaine whispered. "Don't let anyone make you think otherwise."
Kurt pulled away again to see Blaine staring at him with a few stray tears sliding down his cheek as well. He rarely saw Blaine cry. Kurt finally cracked a half-hearted smile and spoke quietly through his tears. "Thank you."
Blaine smiled back and quickly wiped away his falling tears with the sleeve of his blazer. He began walking past Kurt, making his way down the hallway as he motioned for his boyfriend to follow. "C'mon."
"Where are we going?" Kurt asked quietly, his voice sounding higher than usual.
"To find some soap and paper towels," Blaine cracked a confident grin. It appeared as if he hadn't been crying at all. "Let's go remind these idiots that spray-paint can be washed off."
With that, Kurt placed his messenger bag back on his shoulder and sped up to meet Blaine further down the hall. He reached out to take his hand and, suddenly, the pain didn't hurt him anymore.
A/N: Aww, see? It was kinda happy-ish at the end. But the rest of it was just plain 'ol depressing. :P Sorry 'bout that, everyone. It must be done. Kurt's life ain't a cakewalk now just because he has Blaine (although it does make things a whole lot better!)
SEMI-RELEVANT RANT ALERT: I really like Blaine and Kurt's relationship—more so than the other Glee couples. I just think it's more developed and well thought out by the writers. There are times when a new couple surfaces on the show and I'm like "really? Why the hell would they ever get together?" But I like Klaine so much because they make sense. Not only are they just adorable and compatible, but they also grow from each other, which, in my opinion, is a very important factor in a relationship. They both have aspects and traits that the other one lacks, and they help each other become better, stronger people. Blaine helps Kurt find his courage and become a bit more mature while Kurt helps Blaine become a stronger, more self-accepting person and cope with the regret he suffered from running away from the bullies at his old school. Ahh, they're just so perfect. :)
Sorry for the crazy rant—it just poured out of me, haha. Thanks for reading! Next one-shot coming soon!
