PROMISE FOR A BETTER TOMORROW
AN: I hit 70 reviews as I am starting this chapter and I couldn't be happier. I really need to stop posting so often I hardly give people time to read and review the last chapter before I even post the new one. But thank you for all the words of criticism and love and I hope I continue to please you guys. And to 88Mary88, you are by far my toughest critic and I thank you. You make me a better writer by challenging me. You guys seriously are the best! Enjoy this next chapter…
"Done." Serena said stepping back to examine her work. Blair got up and looked at herself in the mirror.
"You look hot. Chuck won't be able to keep his hands off you…"
"You actually did a decent job Serena…" Blair said staring at herself in the mirror and tying up some of the loose ends of her finishing look.
"And you're surprised by that?" Serena gasped.
"Not what I meant. Wish me luck."
"Good luck." Serena squealed with excitement.
"I expect a full report when you get home." Serena commanded.
"Always." Blair hugged her best friend before leaving the penthouse.
Chuck watched as his adopted step mother tidied the house.
"Lilly, stop. It's perfect. Everything is perfect." He assured her with a touch of a hand.
"Yeah you're right… You're right. Well maybe just this can be-"
"No. Just calm down. And please don't do that thing you always do." He cautioned Lilly referring to overwhelming her guests with a plethora of questions.
"What thing I always do?" She asked pretending to be clueless. Chuck gave her a firm look and Lilly rolled her eyes in response.
"Fine. Fine. Fine." She threw her hands up in a surrender before checking up on the caterers that were hard at work in the kitchen. To say Lilly wasn't much of a cook would be an understatement. Normally she would just have ordered room service but she insisted on having this small get-together catered to which Chuck thought it was pointless to do so. The elevator doors opened up and Chuck swallowed hard. He hadn't seen Blair since their squabble about a week ago. Blair turned the corner and Chuck had to catch his breath at the sight of her. Blair was sporting a curly up-do and wearing a stomach hugging strapless red cocktail dress, her baby bump more prominent looking. Chuck found himself wondering if she was just as nervous as she was at the given moment. Chuck couldn't take his eyes off her as he met her in the center of the room.
"Blair-" His eyes glistened into hers as he took her right hand in his.
"Blair!" Lilly beamed waltzing out of the kitchen.
"You look radiant, pregnancy suits you. You are just glowing…" She greeted Blair with a kiss on each cheek. Blair couldn't get a word in edgewise, Lilly was defiantly the overwhelming dinner host type.
"Sit down… sit down…" Lilly ushered her into the dining room that had been over-dressed for the light occasion. The three occupants hardly took over a fourth of the large dinner table. Chuck pulled out Blair's seat for her and pushed it in gently. Blair smiled in response.
"Blair, I can't get over how wonderful you look." Lilly gushed taking her seat and un-folded the napkin neatly into her lap.
"Please tell me, how is everything going with the pregnancy?" Lilly probed. Blair took a sip of her water before answering the question.
"It's going good I'm roughly sixteen weeks along and-"
"Seventeen." Chuck corrected swirling around his ice water. Blair was floored. He had been paying attention. He actually cared…
"Seventeen." Blair confirmed with a shocked smile.
"That's wonderful so you are almost half way done with your second trimester." Lilly announced. Blair just smiled and nodded.
"Lilly you are overwhelming her…" Chuck warned.
"No it's alright."
"I'm just trying to get her to fill in some of the details after all I found out the same way the rest of society did…"
"Lilly-" Chuck snapped at her.
"Please, Charles. I'm only trying to find out about the grandchild I didn't know was on the way until nearly a week ago…"
"So what are you planning to do once the baby is born? Do you have any names picked out? Oh I will have to throw the best baby shower I will have to see if I can book that restaurant down on 5th it would be just perfect..." Lilly talked persistently.
"Lilly! That's enough… You are overwhelming her…" Chuck denounced getting up from his seat to make sure he was hearing her loud and clear. Lilly put herself on mute and Chuck sat down.
"Let me just suggest an excellent Dr.-"
"No. She already has a Dr. By the way I set up an appointment for you next week." Chuck informed Blair.
"Are you going to be there?" Blair asked hopeful for a positive answer.
"I already asked Serena to accompany you I have other business to tend to that day…"
"Charles, don't be ridiculous! Go with her. You will regret it if you don't. It's a wonderful bonding experience for you, Blair, and the baby…" Lilly hovered.
"Lilly, please stop soliciting your suggestions. We appreciate it but we are not interested…" Chuck said coldly.
"Well then maybe I will go with Serena. You will need more support seeing as though Charles doesn't want to be part of all of this. You will need an ally…" Lilly raged on.
"That's it!" Chuck screamed excusing himself abruptly from the dinner table.
"Chuck…" Blair called after him remaining seated.
"It seems as if I have crossed some sort of line here… I think I should leave…" Lilly said getting up from the table and excusing herself upstairs.
A few minutes had gone by before Chuck returned after a much needed cool-off.
"Where's Lilly?" He asked.
"She went upstairs." Blair replied shuffling food around her plate but refusing to take a bite.
"You know you could eat if you want to… you didn't have to wait…"
"No… I wanted to…"
"I'm sorry for Lilly. I should have never agreed to this."
"It's alright I half expected it to be this way. You know how Lilly is…"
"And you still came?" He asked bewildered.
"Yeah… I was hoping it would give us a chance to talk." Blair confessed.
"What did you want to talk about?" Chuck kept his distance leaning against the wall adjacent to the table.
"I wanted you to know that I am sorry… I'm sorry for getting us kicked out of the Drs. office. I'm sorry for my attitude. I'm sorry for treating you like anything less than the way you've treated me…"
"You have been nothing but kind to me those last few days and I treated you just so horribly…" Blair went on.
"Then why did you do it?"
"I was angry… I had just this whole life for myself mapped out and you go and you just crush it… You are so good at ruining things even the good things you have in life you ruin… You couldn't just leave well enough alone…"
"But most of all I was angry at myself…" Blair wiped back the tears beginning to form in her eyes.
"Angry that all I wanted to do ever since I found out about this baby was to tell you. This wasn't the way this was supposed to be… This was supposed to be a happy time for the both of us. For Christ's sake; I'm having a baby… We are having a baby…" Blair acknowledged for the first time. It took her months to acknowledge that she was indeed having a baby and that baby's father is Chuck. Blair buried her head in her hands and began to sob. Chuck walked over and wrapped his arms around Blair attempting to calm her.
"It's alright…" He whispered smoothing her hair out.
"Chuck… tell me you want this baby. I need to hear you say that you want this child…" She requested softly. Chuck sighed heavily and moved around to face Blair.
"What have I ever done to make you think that I didn't want this baby…"
"Blair, this has all I have ever wanted from the get-go… you and eventually somewhere down the road a baby…" He confessed resting his hand on Blair's stomach. Blair sobbed tears of joy. Her smile was infectious. Chuck smiled at her and caressed her cheek.
"I am not going anywhere…" He added. There was still so much to work out as Lilly's words played in Blair's head.
"Can we really do this… be parents…"
"There's no doubt in my mind that we can do this." He reassured her holding both of her hands in his.
"I will love you and this baby for the rest of my life…" He vowed kissing her forehead.
"Blair, I love you…"
"I never stopped loving you." Chuck leaned in and parted his lips with hers. Blair deepened the kiss standing up taking Chuck with her. They pulled apart and Chuck let his hand rest on Blair's cheek; rubbing the tears into her skin. Blair wrapped her arms around his thick form taking in his scent that she had missed. "Blair…" He whispered in her ear.
"What?" She playful whispered back.
"We're having a baby…" Reality had finally set in for both of them, they were going to be parents.
"We're having a baby." She smiled into his chest.
"This was how it was supposed to be…" Chuck said rejoicing in the moment. She had missed this feeling. The way he made her feel… safe. He felt like home. Resting in his arms… Blair was finally home.
