I felt my heart crumple as my heart begin to race, I could feel myself sweating all over my body. I felt restless yet unable to move. This pain… I've began feeling it since a little over four months ago. I simply thought it was nothing more… but for it to evolve over time like this… This is something I did not expect to say the least.
I lay here, alone, trying to muffle my own cries of pain.
The next day came slowly. It has been the longest night I have ever experienced. I didn't get to sleep thanks to that pain lapse.
I should go to Shamal after work today… she'll want to check up on me.
"Nanoha-san… the insane amounts of stress on your linker core that you've been keeping for this whole while has… started to manifest its effects on you… I can't do anymore than just regularly monitor you and offer you rest."
The brunette shook her head and smiled, "Then the more reason I don't need rest. I need to keep living my life to its fullest. Without regrets."
Shamal could only look in astonishment. She knew Nanoha would counter about her current condition but now… for someone who only has a good four to six months to live… She seems… a bit…
"Oh and Shamal… could you keep this a secret? Even from Hayate… I wouldn't want them suddenly stopping my training sessions or work. Nor would I want to place unnecessary burdens on them."
Shamal Bit her lip; however, Nanoha's wish is something she couldn't reject right now. So she gave a light nod.
Nanoha could feel a bit of pain as she was training with her students. Though that didn't affect her as much as it did the first few days these random lapses of pain started up. Many have mentioned that she was returning to her former strength… However, two people would willingly object to that.
Nanoha Takamachi is ill. Though she needs rest, she would rather spend those hours trying to do what she can to contribute to the people around her. And she would rather spend these last few hours with the people she loved most not on some hospital bed endlessly waiting for the end.
Tonight… I've invited Fate-chan, Hayate-chan, and the others to my house for a reunion of sorts. I've always wanted to arrange something like this to let us reminisce our memories. The memories all of us cherish.
Shamal kept looking at me nervously but I just gave her a smile. It wasn't a fake smile… It was a smile so that I could tell her that I felt nothing.
"Nanoha-mama~" A familiar voice said.
"Ahh.. Vivio! How have you been doing with Einhart? You're already in middle school right?"
"Yep! Einhart and I are getting along fine! Middle school is also the best! I've been able to take some military training along with my studies too and before you say it I haven't been slacking in my studies either!" She said energetically.
I give her a warm smile. I am truly blessed to have her as my daughter. I'm so glad she has finally stepped forward in her life. I will truly be able to go without regrets now. Vivio… when did you become so big? Even though you had an adult form.. I… I still can't let go of my tiny cute Vivio. But Ahh… time passes by so fast.
Ahh… these people… are all good people. They will take care of whatever I might leave behind.
Then… I see the one person who my whole world has centred its life against. Fate Testarossa Harlaown, now an Admiral thanks to all her hard work. I'm proud of her. Even though I've never really gotten a chance to show her how much I love her and care for her… all I can really do is watch… right? After all… so much time has passed. I think, especially now, that it's too late to say anything. I don't want her to be broken down by what I am experiencing right now.
"Fate-chan! How have you been?" I cheerily asked her.
"Nanoha," She gave me a kind smile, "I've been doing great lately. I've solved a lot of cases so far. What about you? How has the ace of aces progressed with her teachings?"
I smirked a bit, "I learn new tricks earlier than you Fate-chan, meaning, I've been able to keep up with these kids."
She gives me a light giggle and says, "I'm happy for you Nanoha."
I love you.
Three words I don't have the courage to say… but… perhaps this is for the best. She's already happy with her life.
No… this can't be happening now…
Not when everyone's here… no… please… give me more time…!
But it hurts… so much…
Shamal's face paled as she saw Nanoha wrenching her chest tightly. She immediately rushed off for Nanoha, who is immediately supported by an alarmed Fate, concern is written within the crimson eyes of the blonde. They managed to make her sit down on a sofa. However, Nanoha still was writhing in pain.
Then… Nanoha Takamachi opened her eyes… both of them became a shade of blue… that seemed dead.
Shamal gulps and immediately places her pointer and middle finger on Nanoha's wrist to check if she were still alive.
"…Who turned off the lights? I can't feel my legs…"
Shamal looked at her watch… she didn't have much longer to live. She looked at Fate.
"Fate-san… I have a favour to ask."
Fate replied with a solemn nod.
"Could you please… take her to the sky…? She only has… more or less… fifteen minutes. Please make it count." Shamal said grimly.
Hayate's voice suddenly came. "Why didn't you tell us Shamal?"
"It was… her final wish. Look Fate-san we don't have much time... are you willing to do this?"
"I'll do it."
And so Fate Testarossa Harlaown and Nanoha Takamachi flew in the sky. Nanoha was in a very weak state… but Fate wanted to break down into tears… and yet she couldn't. Somehow… it was the only favour she could do for Nanoha.
"Fate-chan… are we in the sky?" A weak tone came from Nanoha.
"Ah… I've always wondered what it would be like to spend your final moments here. Nyahaha… I guess I screwed up again." She said, her voice still weak.
She was cut off with Nanoha putting her finger on Fate's lip. Don't. You're going to make me cry.
And if I go,
while you're still here...
Know that I live on,
vibrating to a different measure
-behind a thin veil you cannot see through.
You will not see me,
so you must have faith.
I wait for the time when we can soar together again,
-both aware of each other.
Until then, live your life to its fullest.
And when you need me,
Just whisper my name in your heart,
...I will be there.
I'll always be with you Fate-chan. No matter what path you'll take. I will support you. –Were Nanoha Takamchi's last words.
