Chapter 1: The Diagnosis
It started with a bruise. A tiny, insignificant bruise. But it stayed on Margo's arm for weeks. Gru knew about the bruise, but he was unaware that it had been there for weeks. He noticed it on a Monday morning, while he and his daughter were making the lunches.
"Margo, why do you still have that bruise?" Gru asked, concerned about his eldest daughter.
"I don't know." Margo said, putting jelly on Agnes' peanut butter and jelly sandwich.
"Maybe we should get it checked. My father had a bruise just like that."
"Your dad died of leukemia, right?" Margo asked, looking up at her father.
Gru uncomfortably swallowed his tears. He didn't want his daughter to be diagnosed with cancer.
"Yes, Margo, he did." Minutes later, Gru sent Edith and Agnes to school while he and Margo went to the doctor.
After a few tests, Gru and Margo waited for the results.
For the first time since Gru had adopted Margo and her sisters, Margo...cried. Gru rubbed his daughter's back.
"I'm so scared." Margo said.
"I will be here for you." Gru said.
And Gru meant it. He knew that, without a doubt, he would be there for Margo if she was diagnosed with cancer. The doctor came in, his face full of regret.
"We have the results of the tests. Margo, I regret to inform you that you have leukemia." The doctor said.
Just like that, both Margo and Gru's worlds came crashing down.
A/N: Sorry the chapter is so short. It just seemed like a good place to stop. Chapter 2 will be longer. I pinky promise! :)
