She couldn't help but laugh when she saw Arthur in an apron.

Arthur turned to see her standing in the doorway of the kitchen and smiled embarrassedly, flushing a little. "I was hoping to surprise you," he said. "I wanted to be done before you got home so it'd be waiting for you."

Ariadne repressed more laughter. "Well, count me surprised."

Arthur flushed more and examined his attire. He began to untie the apron and got a surprise of his own when Ariadne stopped him. "Leave it."

He looked at her confusedly. "Alright. It's your birthday."

Ariadne peeked around the corner into the dining room and saw that the table was already set. With candles and cloth napkins and everything. She smiled to herself again. "Was there anything you needed help with?"

"No, no. It's your birthday," he repeated. "I'm doing the cooking."

She raised an eyebrow. "And what should I do while I wait?"

"You could pick some mood music." He gestured toward the stereo in the other room.

Her other eyebrow rose on its own. "Alright," she said, shaking her head and chuckling to herself as she walked into the other room. Arthur was being sillier than usual and it was adorable. She would have to have birthdays more often if this was what came of them.

Once she'd chosen some music, she sat down at the table, with a clear view of Arthur in the kitchen. It really was sweet, albeit silly, watching him cook. Especially with the knowledge that he was doing this for her. Actually, when she thought about it that way, it was kind of sexy. That he'd put such effort into trying to make her happy.

She walked up behind him and wrapped her arms around him. He stiffened with surprise, then smiled and relaxed as he continued cooking.

"Be honest," she whispered. "Are you doing this in hopes of getting laid tonight?"

Arthur coughed, presumably on his own spit (or his own denial). "No! No, I'm doing it because it's your birthday and you're special and I wanted to do something special for you."

"Ah. Well, I was going to say that if you were trying to get laid, your chances of success are pretty high. But since you're not interested…"

At that, Arthur turned in her arms and kissed her.

"More than high," she corrected herself when their kiss ended.

"Okay, but I really do want to at least have dinner first. After all this effort…"

Ariadne smiled and playfully rolled her eyes. "Of course." She pecked him a small kiss before letting him get back to work.
