A dark haired man walked through the empty hospital corridor. His footsteps echoing throughout the hall as he looked for his destination. Near the end of the corridor he turned to his right and walked into the small hospital room.
The white room was small, a hospital bed dominating the room. The man walked to the chair next to the bed and sat down quietly. When he was settled he looked at the man on the bed.
Severus Snape watched the man's chest rise and fall as he breathed. Every time he visited he always watched for signs of life.
Once again, like many times before, he only saw the man's shaggy black hair. The man's hair and beard seemed to have not been cut in a long while. His skin had an abnormal pale glow. What stood out the most were four large scars across his face.
Severus shook his head it seemed the staff at St. Mungo's has not been taking their duties seriously. He took out his wand and slowly cut the man's hair and beard. Severus took a small vial from his robes and poured it carefully into the comatose man on the bed.
Slowly the man began to look like the boy he remembered. Well, the boy he remembered after the war. It had been combat that had left his face incurably marred by scars.
Harry Potter had been in a coma for three long years. Severus slowly sat back in his chair beginning his walk down memory lane.
Severus stood up slowly, he could not believe the bloody snake had bit him. Luckily he had had a Bezoar in his pocket at the time.
Slowly walking toward the epic battle between Lord Voldemort and Harry Potter, Severus saw the carnage that lay around him.
When he arrived at a safe distance he watched, wand at the ready to defend himself from wayward Death Eaters.
Voldemort stood firing curse after curse just as Severus expected. What amazed Severus was the boy standing before him. The boy held his wand meeting each curse with his own. The strength the boy radiated amazed and thrilled him.
Harry Potter seemed to radiate power and for the first time Severus felt hope creep into his heart. The boy was magnificent; he dodged and held his own against a man who had killed his humanity in exchange for power.
Looking around he noticed that all other battles had stopped and each witch and wizard stared, awed by the epic battle. Turning back to the duel, Severus noticed something.
With each curse that Potter dodged Voldemort seemed to become more frantic. This was causing his fighting to become erratic. Potter seemed to notice this as well because he began casting curses in a faster rhythm.
All of a sudden, Potter had sent three curses at the Dark Lord. The man tried to dodge each one but in the end was struck by the green curse squarely in the chest.
A large shriek was heard throughout the battle grounds as everyone watched silently as the evil man crumbled to the floor. Not wasting time, Severus noticed the boy pick up the discarded sword of Gryffindor and as if a scene from an epic tale, he plunged the long blade into the heart of the withered creature on the floor.
Before they could rejoice, the creature gave sent one last curse at Potter and slowly the hero crumpled onto the floor.
Severus still could not believe that the boy who had amazed him on the battle field now lay in a coma. It had been Three years since that day and still the boy lay in sleep. The only proof of his participation in the battle was those scars.
A saddened look came across his face as he remembered what had happened after Potter's collapse.
When the hero of the wizarding world collapsed on the floor everyone leapt into action. The Death Eaters were rounded up and thankfully he remained hidden in the shadows of the forest.
When the Death Eaters were all rounded up, someone finally ran to check on Potter. Although wanting to help the boy, Severus knew that if they saw him they would tie him up without letting him explain. So Severus watched from the sidelines as the wizard who checked Potter shook his head and called for a mediwizard.
When the mediwizard arrived they hurriedly levitated the unconscious boy toward the ruins of the castle. Severus took this opportunity to walk toward the castle. He needed to get his pensive in order to prove his innocence.
As he crept into the castle he heard the groans and moans of the wounded and of the mourning. Slowly he made his way into his chambers and retrieved his pensive. Now he needed to find Minerva or Kingsley as they were the more level headed.
He walked trough the Great hall and when he found Kingsley he walked up to the man and before being hexed asked him to look at the memories in the pensive.
Severus glared as Kingsley as he felt magical ropes envelop him. He watched with bated breath as Kingsley watched the memories and when he was finished he turned to Severus and nodded. He felt the magical ties unwrap and Kingsley smiled, "Thank you for everything you did Severus."
Severus felt awkward and reverted back to his usual snarky self.
"I don't care about your appreciation just give me my freedom."
Kingsley only smiled at his snarky tone and laughed before walking to some Ministry official and handing over the pensive memories.
Kingsley asked him to follow him toward the wounded section where most of the Order was assembled. As they walked through the dead he noticed many bodies of students he remembered and people he had met.
He almost stopped in shock at seeing the faces of Remus Lupin, Nymphadora Lupin, Fred Weasley, Andromeda Tonks and Minerva McGonagall amongst the dead. Shaking his head sadly at the deaths of his comrades he walked toward the remaining Order members.
Apparently Kingsley had already explained his presence there because everyone only nodded at him. They were all surrounding a single bed. On that bed laid the boy who had fought so fiercely only a few minutes ago.
When Severus was able to look more closely he noticed four freshly made gashes across his face. The Mediwizard worked silently while the Order members discussed the situation of their savior.
"How is he doing?" Severus said quietly
It was Kingsley who answered him. "Whatever Voldemort cursed him with has not allowed him to wake and left him with gashes across his face."
The mediwizard appeared in front of them a look of uncertainty on his face.
"I'm afraid that he has been pushed into a magical coma. The large gashes are a manifestation of the curse placed on him."
Ginervra Weasley was the next to speak "Do you know what curse it was?"
The healer nodded "Yes, it is called the Sleeping Beauty curse; it causes the victim to sleep for an undetermined amount of time and slowly it mares' the person's face until they slowly die."
Everyone looked shocked "Is there a cure?" Granger asked
"It is not known, this curse is ancient and we only know its basic details. You all have an important decision to make he can be placed in a hospital room in St. Mungo's or someone can take him with them and care for him. It has been known that proximity to loved ones can help heal patients. He will require a lot of care but if anyone would like to take him we can train them."
The mediwizard was met by silence. Severus was surprised to see that they were not all jumping at the chance to protect their hero. He was about to speak when the voice of Ginny Weasley interrupted.
"Since it will kill him eventually would it not be better to help him along?"
Severus was floored by her audacity. "Do you mean to kill him Ms. Weasley?"
She shook her head but said "I only mean it in his best interest."
Severus looked to everyone else looking for a rational person to speak up. Finding no one he finally spoke. "So, you suggest we kill him for his own good? Did you not hear what he said? It is not certain when and if he will die. Do you all seriously believe that the boy who has survived a killing curse will die from this?"
"We have to rebuild and grieve we won't have time to take care of him." Ronald Weasley said quietly.
Severus glared. "Is that what you're all worried about? So much for the light side, let me guess he did his job and now he's expendable?"
"Well, Professor if you are so passionate about it, why don't you take him?" Granger said quietly.
Severus felt like he had stepped into some alternate universe. He looked at everyone's face and slowly he saw the truth written on their faces. The boy had done his job and now those he had saved are so ready to condemn him. His life was in danger and instead of protecting him they turn their backs on him. These were the people he had called family and they were so ready to let go of him instead of fighting for him. Severus felt utterly disgusted.
With renewed determination he turned to the Mediwizard. "I'm afraid I don't have proper living arrangements yet nor the money to pay for a new place so soon but would it be possible to place him at St. Mungo's until I am able to accommodate him?"
"Yes, I will arrange it."
Severus nodded and turned toward the group behind him. "I hope you won't one day regret this."
They only stared back at him before they all left. The Weasleys didn't even spare one last look at the boy they had once called son and brother. Granger only looked back once before following her boyfriend away from her once best friend. Kingsley gave him a nod before walking away.
Severus turned to the boy on the bed and a look of panic crossed his face. He had just done it again, he had been free but now once again he was rushing to save Potter. What was the world coming to?
Their betrayal had come at a huge surprise to Severus. To this day, they had not visited the boy, instead continuing to live their lives as if he had never been a part of it. Shortly after, Potter had been placed in this room and Severus would come visit him whenever he could.
Severus had worked hard for the last three years. The ministry had taken his money and with the reconstruction they had finally given it back to him. His childhood home had been destroyed during the war but as of today it had finally been rebuilt.
This was the reason for his visit today; he would finally be taking the wizard to live with him. Severus sighed, Teddy had wanted to come with him but Severus thought it best to come alone.
It still surprised Severus that he had been taking care of the small child since the death of his parents and grandparents.
Severus had been helping reconstruct Hogwarts and was currently trying to reconstruct the Slytherin dorms when he heard a voice calling his name. After being cleared by the ministry he began to help reconstruct the school.
A man wearing grey robes approached him. "Professor, I am here to discuss something of importance with you."
Severus glared at the man but motioned for him to continue. "You are currently taking care of Mr. Harry Potter, are you not?"
The wizard looked uncertain but continued "Well, you see sir, that Mr. Potter was made legal guardian of Theodore Sirius Lupin. As the young baby's family has all been whipped out Mr. Potter is the only one legally responsible for him. Now, since Mr. Potter is not able to care for him we were hoping you would care for the boy?"
Severus glared silently at the ministry official "Have you asked anyone else?"
The wizard nodded "No one has claimed the baby and if you decide not to the boy will be placed in one of the ministry's orphanages."
Severus sighed; it seemed he would never get the peace and quiet he longed for. Something deep within him raged at the idea of the orphan being sent to a horrible ministry orphanage. He knew the pain of losing those you loved and feeling quite alone.
"I will take the child, I live here temporarily but I will be moving out soon enough. When can I take the child?"
The wizard looked surprised. "I can have a house elf deliver him to you right now."
Severus signed all of the paperwork before receiving the small child. A house elf appeared with a small bundle. Handing over the small child wrapped in the white blanket Severus was struck by the oddity of his new life. He had save the life of his nemesis's son and was now caring for another child of his former tormentors.
He looked down at the boy and found two blue eyes and wisps of brown hair. As the baby looked up at him his eyes turned a deep brown almost black and his hair became dark. It seemed the boy had his mother's talent for changing their appearance.
So here he was, three years later, taking Potter to his new home while little Teddy Lupin waited for him there. As he began preparing the boy for the transfer he felt apprehensive. He would now see the boy every day, a constant reminder of missed opportunities. Severus sighed and damned his perpetual need to save this boy's life.
His life had definitely not turned out the way he had expected.
