Fierce, powerful warrior. Clary watches him, her eyes big. She doesn't know how he does it nor does she wish to know. She watches him cut down demon after demon, monster after monster.

It's all she can do to keep from covering her eyes. She knows that he's fierce, but the monsters are just as fierce. However, she hangs in there and refuses to look away.

"Clary," he says in his angelic voice, "it's over."

She looks at him, then at where the demons were. There was nothing. They had been send back to their proper places.

"We have to get out of here before more come." He holds out his hand and she takes it.

"Where? Jace, where will we go?" Clary inquires.
"Away from here."
Clary looks around. This is her home. She can't just leave it.

Her whole world was falling apart. Her mother was gone, Luke refused to see her, and she hadn't talked to Simon for days. Everyone she ever loved had abandoned her. Abandoned was getting to be a pretty regular word in her vocabulary.

Jace touched her shoulder. "Clary, we have to go."

Clary stood up blinking hard. No way was she going to cry in front of him.

Jace gently brushes her hair. "We need to go," he gently says again.

Clary bits her lip. "I know."

Jace puts his arm around her. "I won't leave you."

"I know."

As they leave the apartment, Clary can't help but to stare at him. He had suffered just as she had. Only his was worse. He had witnessed his own father's murder. That had caused his world to fall apart. Her own father was dead, but she couldn't bear the thought of seeing it happen.

She leaned against him.

"What?" he inquired.

"Nothing." She didn't dare tell him what she'd been thinking.

He led them down the street. Clary had no idea where he was taking her. All she knew was that she had to trust him. She had to put her trust in him that he would get them to where they needed to be.

A safe spot.

"You know we're going to be in trouble when we get back," Jace said breaking the silence.

Clary looks at him. "Why?"

Jace shrugs his shoulders. "We just are."

"That's not a reason."

Jace stares straight ahead. "According to them, it is."

Clary rolls her eyes. "What will they do to us?"

"Probably the worst possible thing they can think of." He leads her up the stairs to a church. He holds the door open for her.

"Which is?"

"Get inside and we'll find out."

When they enter, Jace takes a deep breath. "I knew it."

Clary moves to stand next to him and takes a deep breath. She doesn't smell anything. "What?"

"Isabelle's cooking."

"Is that bad?"

Jace looks her dead in the eye. "Very bad."

"Oh."

Jace holds out his hand. "Shall we go meet our punishment, my lady."

Clary takes his hand. "We shall, my lord."

Even when the world is falling apart, there is always someone to sew the broken seams back together. These words ran through Clary's mind as she allowed Jace to lead her to whatever punishment their Maker had created for them.
