Sandaime Hokage Hiruzen Sarutobi looked down at the child who was systematically destroying his office. He had done his best to love the child as he should, but some days were far more difficult than others. Some days, like today, he found himself hating the boy for something that was and wasn't his fault, hating the boy for being there when she wasn't.

Today was their anniversary, and instead of being by his side sharing in his retirement, his Biwako was cold in the ground.

It was on days like this that he tended to look the other way, even though he knew it was wrong.


Naruto loved the Old Man, and most of the time, the Old Man loved him. It was because of this that he pretended not to notice when the Old Man's eyes went cold like those of the other villagers sometimes.
