It may seem a little odd for me to post a Nabari fic, since I have given no hint of even knowing it exists yet, but secretly I have been totally obsessed with it. I have been overtaken by love for the pairing of Raikou/Gau (which is basically canon anyway) since watching the anime (and then watching it again) and reading the manga (and then reading it again) which has culminated in this little fic. Hope you like~
I don't own Nabari no Ou, because there's utterly no way I can draw or plot that well.
Raikou had a lollipop. Gau couldn't exactly remember how the lollipop had come to be in Raikou's possession, nor the reason for it - all he knew was that it was incredibly distracting.
It wasn't as though Raikou was trying to distract him. That was the worst part. The pink-haired samurai was simply reclining on the hard-backed sofa, legs folded over each other and one hand cupping his face as he gazed at a darkening evening sky. The glistening lollipop was in his other hand, and every now and again Raikou would bring it to his lips.
Gau gulped and turned back to his own corner of the room, to the report he was supposed to be filing. But for whatever reason, the profile of an alarmingly hairy Nabari rogue just wasn't interesting enough to stop Gau's eyes drifting back to the couch.
Flick. Flick. Flick. Why couldn't he just eat it like a normal person, instead of like a snake? Raikou's pointy tongue flitted out to lick the lollipop before darting back. Surely he could barely taste it with a touch that brief? Gau watched his tongue flicker out once, twice, a third time, unaware that his own mouth was half-open until Raikou spoke.
At once, Gau sat up, eyes open wide. Had Raikou caught him staring? Was there some rule against that? Of course there probably was - it would be unnerving, wouldn't it, having someone stare in such a poorly-disguised way... Especially with the direction Gau hadn't even realised his thoughts had taken. Not that Raikou knew about his thoughts, of course. Or did he? Could Raikou read minds? Gau wondered if he was reading too much into this. "Y-yes, Raikou-san?"
"Do I have any particular jobs tomorrow?" Raikou asked, not once shifting his gaze from the sky, which was now a deep indigo.
Deeply relieved, Gau replied, "No, none that I remember. I'll let you know if anything comes up, though."
"Thank you, Gau," said Raikou, almost absently. He raised the hand with the lolly in it again - but this time, he ran the lollipop across his lower lip and then traced its path with his tongue.
Gau's breath hitched in his throat and he bit down on a corner of his own lip to mute the gasp. A smattering of crimson decorated his cheekbones. Gau's thoughts had officially hit the gutter.
For a moment, Raikou's gaze wavered towards Gau. The two locked eyes for a heartbeat before Raikou looked down, blinking his long lashes slowly and deliberately. The smile that suddenly danced about his features could almost have been described as coy.
He knew what he was doing, damn him! Gau's blush deepened as though his face was a page on one of those colouring books - one that a toddler was crayoning far too enthusiastically.
Raikou lifted his face off his palm. "Gau... am I bothering you?"
"B-bothering me?" Gau's voice was a hoarse stammer.
"Bothering you," repeated Raikou clearly. He uncrossed his legs and fixed his brown eyes on Gau's grey ones. Gau couldn't blink.
"No, of course not. Why-why would you ask such a thing, Raikou-san?"
"Oh, no reason." Raikou's voice was low and velvety, but somehow still casual. Leaving his lollipop on the sofa - something Gau couldn't stand in itself, since it would leave a sticky smudge - Raikou crossed the room, stopping just shy of Gau's chair, and peered at the report that his curly-haired kohai had made little headway on. "It's just that you seemed a little... fidgety."
While Raikou's distance was still sufficient enough to keep his head clear, Gau said quietly, "Don't leave that lollipop there. It'll leave a mark." As he spoke, his eyes were firmly on the grainy wood of the table.
There was a creak. Gau turned - Raikou was now leaning against the back of his chair, propping himself up with his elbows. One blush blending into another, Gau bit back a squeak, hardly believing his thoughts could get any dirtier.
Raikou's eyes, at a much closer proximity than usual, widened slightly. "Feel free to keep going. I'm not even here," he assured. Pausing, he tipped his head the slightest amount. "...Unless I'm making you feel uncomfortable?"
"Not at all," mumbled Gau, bending his head back over his work to hide still-flushed cheeks. Never in a million years was he going to admit how much he was enjoying Raikou's steady breaths fanning out across the back of his neck, not when his own breathing was so fast and shallow.
A faint smirk tugged at the corners of Raikou's lips, although Gau couldn't see it. "You haven't written anything," Raikou pressed softly.
It was true. Gau's pencil hadn't even left the tabletop. Gau cursed himself. Damn it, why couldn't he put on even a relatively normal front?
"I think I am putting you off." Raikou's voice was slightly apologetic as he pushed himself upright again. "Sorry."
But Gau's head had shot up involuntarily, his neck feeling strangely cold without Raikou's breath to warm it. Without even meaning to, Gau made a tiny noise - a whine? - in the back of his throat.
"What was that, Gau?" Raikou turned back, his face nearly too innocent to be true.
"N-nothing!" Mortified, Gau swivelled his focus back to the report that should have been filed ages ago, would have been filed ten minutes ago, were it not for Raikou and his stupid lollipop and general distractingness.
"Hmm." Raikou threw a glance out to the sky once more, pondering. "Despite the fact that I am in a rather irritating mood this evening, I can't help but be egged on by your attitude, Gau. It's unlike you not to be filing. Is it possible... that you want to be distracted?"
Gau's face reached the point of being pillarbox-coloured. "Wh-what do you mean by that, Raikou-sama?" he spluttered, resorting back to respectful honourifics in an attempt to counteract the filthy thoughts in his mind. Before he could act on them, at least.
Raikou didn't reply. Instead, he approached Gau slowly, carefully, and placed his hands over his. Gau started, not daring to move his hand. He could barely believe what was happening, and it took him a couple of moments to realise that he wasn't breathing.
"Is this distraction enough?" Raikou breathed, just inches away. "Or perhaps-"
Quickly, deftly, he lifted their hands off Gau's lap, manipulating their fingers until their hands were twined. Skin-on-skin contact. Gau stared, first at their hands, and then to Raikou's face. "Raikou-san, what are you...?"
"Do you object?" He was still painfully close - that much Gau was hyper-aware of. "Would you prefer I just stopped..." Leaning in, noses just scarcely touching, making Gau's cheeks heat to a thousand degrees... "...Right here?"
Gau shivered, unable to say a word. He ached to close the millimetre distance between their lips, but he was still so unsure of whether Raikou would approve, whether it was what he actually wanted, if...
"Well, fair enough."
As Raikou pulled away, Gau jerked upwards - for the most tantalisingly, ridiculously fleeting of moments, their lips brushed. Then, before Gau could even register what had happened, Raikou was on the other side of the room, Shirogamon in hand.
"I'm going out," said Raikou with a smile. "Yukimi asked me to drop by. The boss sent over a couple more profiles for us to check out."
Calm. Collected. Gau swallowed nervously. "Raikou-san?"
Gau's eyes darted away, towards the sofa. "Tidy up that lollipop, okay? It's starting to bug me."
"Later," Raikou promised, one hand on the door.
They both knew that he wasn't just talking about the lolly. Gau blushed again at his abruptness.
But a smile was playing around the corners of Raikou's lips. "First, because, like I said, you looked like you could do with a distraction. Second, because you need to lay off working so much. And, third..." Raikou pulled the door open and stepped outside, leaving it to swing behind him as he smirked. "...You're cute when you're turned on."
