Nineteen Years Later...
October 31st, 2016
The normally-quiet streets of Surry were filled with shrieks, sometimes of laughter, sometimes of temporary fright. A wizard could stroll down the sidewalk and not feel the slightest bit out of place.
"You know, Harry, dear, at some point you're going to run out of excuses to avoid attending the Halloween parties."
A tall, raven-haired man with mischievous green eyes glanced over his shoulder at the greying couple, dressed as Commander Vimes and Sybil Ramkin-Vimes from the Discworld novels. "I haven't yet. Besides, I have to deal with stuffy people wanting me to smile for the camera the other three-hundred-sixty-four days of the year. I'll take Halloween to embrace a night of whimsy and fun."
He was dressed as the 10th Doctor from the popular Muggle TV series, hand-in-hand with a redhaired woman dressed as Donna Noble, both keeping a close eye on the gaggle of children running a short distance ahead of them. "Donna" smiled, "Besides, Padma and Hermione are teaming up this year. We have a bet on which politician they'll reduce to tears first, so it would be cheating if we were there and had the opportunity to influence the results."
Natasja, now closer to sixty than she was to fifty, and adamantly refusing to be more specific than that, gave up and laughed, Henry's deeper chuckle blending with hers.
Harry and Susan had waited a few years before trying to have children, wanting some time to grow into themselves, without the pressures of a hidden war or parenthood. As such, Sarah Lily Potter wasn't quite old enough to rebel at the idea of parental accompaniment while Trick-or-Treating, and was merrily skipping in a pink medieval princess dress, plastic cauldron of candies swinging in her hand. Her brothers, dressed as a tiny pirate and a robot, followed in her wake, while her best friends, Sarathi Thomas and Daphne Longbottom, skipped at her side as Padme Amidala and a Lady Knight.
Ahead of them, a dragon jumped out of the bushes. "Rawr! Give me candy, or be taken hostage!"
The adults tensed when the three girls put down their cauldrons, but relaxed when a lightsaber, a battle axe and a sword were produced. "If you want it, come and claim it!"
The dragon weighed up their odds of success, and quickly backed off, disappearing down the street in search of easier targets. Natasja smiled. "Well, at least parenthood is never boring."
Her son grinned, draping an arm over Susan's shoulder. "All the adventure I need or want for the rest of my life, thanks."
A/N: You can thank Meridiean for this.
I don't write fanfiction as much anymore, and what I do write is mostly over on Archive Of Our Own, under the pen-name Natasja. Most of my time that isn't taken up by my day job, is spent writing Original fiction, published and available on Amazon. The most recent of those is "Halloween Highlights", a short story of spooky and supernatural short stories which are less Stephan King and more in line with The Paths Diverge kind of adventure with a twist of comedy for flavour.
