Her elbows rested on the desk, her head in her hands, Elena sighed heavily. She just could not connect the dots. Why were all these Animal attacks so familiar to her? It wasn't about the people involved; it was just the nature of the attacks. Feeling a little sceptical, Elena pulled up some other research – Werewolves. Elena always thought it a Myth, a fabrication of feeble minds. But could there possible be some truth to it? Could there really be a Lycanthrope living in Mystic Falls?
Elena closed the article and Yawned – it was getting late and she was getting hungry, her rumbling stomach was proof of that. Elena had hoped to trigger something – maybe something about her past, her identity, but had drawn a blank. Grabbing her things, she made her way out of the library and back to her car. Starting the engine, she drove herself home – well, to the boarding house, but for now it was as good as home.
When she got in, she was pleased to see a roaring fire in the main seating area – it was getting cold outside. Sitting in an arm chair next to it, she called for a pizza and after setting the phone down, pulled out the journal.
She had been carrying this around in her bag and had no idea why. It was blank and she couldn't remember if she kept a journal before, but she did now.
She wrote about what she had been researching, about the werewolf theory, but she had no suspects, she didn't know anyone well enough. Well, apart from the suspicious characters she had met.
Mr Saltzman turned out to be some kind of a friend of Damon's, but he mostly kept himself to himself and they seemed to have some level of hatred for each other.
Caroline just seemed quite – well, nosy really. Bonnie was a bit drawn back, but Elena figured she were shy. Tyler didn't really seem to care. It was Jeremy who interested Elena. He was quiet, suspicious, and always watching her closely.
But as soon as she started to suspect it, she laughed at herself – Werewolves, really? It just couldn't be.
She also wrote about Damon. He had been so good to her, and so supporting. He felt like a good friend to Elena and she appreciated that – she needed one after all.
Then her mind crossed over Stefan. When she had seen that younger Salvatore brother, she felt something she didn't think she had felt before. He was quiet and mysterious, but that only made Elena like him more. He was really good looking too…
"You okay?" Damon asked, and Elena looked up quickly, snapping her journal shut.
"I'm fine just – writing things down" she smiled.
Damon smiled back as he moved across the room to sit on the opposite chair. "Any luck today?" he asked and she shook her head. "I just keep coming up with silly ideas" she laughed. "Like?" Damon asked. "Werewolves" Elena scoffed.
"Werewolves huh? Have you ever considered… Vampires?"
Elena furrowed her brows. "Vampires? That's even worse than mine!" she replied with another laugh.
"At least consider it" Damon asked. "Er, sure" she replied, not entirely sure she would.
Just then there was a knock at the door. Excusing herself, Elena jumped up to answer it.
"What on earth do you think you're doing?" Stefan snarled, jumping on Damon from nowhere.
"Just giving her some helpful advice" Damon replied and Stefan let go. "Why on earth would you lead her to exposing what we really are?" Stefan asked him, standing tall in front of his older brother with his arms crossed. "Look, I thought you wanted her to know the truth? Well, we can't exactly just tell her all about it, so why not gently nudge her towards it?"
Stefan shook his head. "If you dare hurt her…" he started, but Elena was closing the door and heading toward them.
"Oh, Hello Stefan" she greeted politely as she walked back to her seat.
"How are you?" he asked. "I'm fine thank you. Are you okay?"
"I will be" he smiled, and Elena sat to eat her food.
There was an awkward vibe in the air as they all sat around the fire, Damon drinking as usual. Elena got the strong feeling the brothers really didn't get on, and wondered why. What could drive such a wedge between two brothers? After all, blood was thicker than water.
Elena tried asking them about growing up, but their answer was vague. No mother, just a father. No explanation and no stories of each other.
Something was definitely up with them.
There wasn't much left to talk about since Elena had no stories of her own past, and with the hour being late, she excused herself to bed.
Slowly Elena got herself ready for bed, a few questions buzzing through her head.
Maybe she could address them tomorrow she thought with another wide yawn
