Jen couldn't believe what she was seeing. She and Scree had defeated Abaddon and restored order to the Nexus. However she never imagined that in doing this her world would again be thrust into complete and utter turmoil.
"Scree, I don't understand. What is happening to you?" Jen asked in bewilderment.
"Jen, my dear, only what was meant to happen" Scree smiled knowingly as the yellow energy engulfed his small frame. Through the brightness, Jen could only see his shadow curling and writhing as though the gargoyle had no skeletal frame at all. She finally had to cover her eyes because the yellow aura engulfing Scree had gotten so bright that it was like staring into a miniature sun.
"Jen. Jen, you can look now," a familiar voice said. However, it wasn't the grandfatherly, wise voice that Scree had. It was a rough, coarse voice that Jen knew all too well.
"Lewis? Scree, what's going on?" Jen asked in frustrated disbelief.
"Look up and you will see," the voice replied. Jen slowly parted her fingers and looked to where Scree had been standing only moments ago. In his place was a slender man in a wife beater and old faded blue jeans. Jen could have been deaf, dumb, and blind and she still would have known the man anywhere.
"Lewis!" Jen exclaimed, throwing herself into his arms. "Is it really you?"
"It's me, Jen. I told you that I would never leave you," he said, tilting her face up toward his.
"But…how are you here? I saw Belhazur take off with you."
"Jen, I died not long after we were brought into the hospital. I was brought here the same as you were. Arella appeared to me and she gave me a choice: I could die like any other normal mortal would and wait for you in the afterlife, or I could go on this journey with you. The one condition was that you couldn't know that it was me until balance was restored to Oblivion. Didn't you notice that I knew little about the later realms? Arella couldn't finish telling me everything before I had to bring you here. Otherwise, you would have simply died."
"But…what do we do now? Are we stuck here?" A large group of butterflies circled around the lovers then materialized into a face.
"Jennifer, you possess within yourself the power to come and go as you please. You two are the only beings in the universe that can cross over into both realms", the goddess Arella answered. Jen stood for a moment, considering her options. Truth be told, the Nexus and the worlds around it had seemed more like a home to her than Mortalis ever had. A smile slowly crept across her face as she made her decision.
"Let's go back to the beach," she said grinning.
"I wonder where I've heard that before," Lewis mused, taking Jen's hand.
"Come on….Rocky," Jen laughed as she ran through the rift gate, Lewis right behind her.
