He heard something, he was sure of it. He walked to the office door and peered out, confirming his suspicion. There, stood right in front of him, was a silhouette of what could only be a woman. Reacting in an instant J.R. flicked on the lights to reveal a stunned Kristin Shepard clutching a revolver. The shock on her face at being so suddenly revealed was second only to the horror on the face of J.R.
She gathered herself remarkably quickly and lifted the gun toward him with a cold grin. "Hello J.R." she said sweetly.
And that was it. There was a stand-off. J.R. dared not make any kind of move toward the gun and Kristin was relishing the discomfort on his face. All he could do was try to assess how serious the threat was but in his ever-calculating mind he knew that the longer he made Kristin feel in control, the longer he helped her to enjoy her power over him, the less likely she was to pull the trigger. He therefore did not feign confidence and simply let his true nervousness shine through.
"What are you doing here? And why the hell are you pointing that gun at me darlin'?"
Kristin laughed. "Why, J.R.? Isn't it obvious? I'm here to kill you."
That was enough to shake what was left of J.R.'s confidence. Now he had to feign some sort of composure as much for his benefit as for Kristin's or else he would have ended up pleading for his life in a very undignified manner. Besides, he could tell by the look in her eyes that Kristin was not to be swayed by anything like that. No, he knew how to handle her if only he could buy himself the time.
"Well… Kristin surely we can talk about this? I know I was a little hard on you honey what with that prostitution business, but you can just forget about all that. I'll call Harry McSween right away and get all that cleared up." No response. Try again. "And… and the condo? Well you can just stay there as long as you like. I was only fooling about you going down to Rio. In fact hell, why don't you have the condo? It's yours. My mamma and daddy haven't used it in years and I can sure as hell find somewhere else for meetings. The Ewings got plenty of condos all over town."
"Shall we go into your office and sit down J.R.?"
Kristin's expression hadn't changed and she seemed unmoved, but it was an olive branch J.R. certainly wasn't going to refuse. He stepped back through the doorway to his office and moved around behind the desk, sitting in his chair and beckoning Kristin to sit opposite, but she seemed to prefer to stand against the back of the chair, using it as a rest from which she pointed her gun straight at his chest. The whole situation was unnerving J.R., clouding his judgement. He had to think. He needed to think. Fortunately Kristin started him off.
"You know J.R., there was a time when I would have done anything for you. I loved you. Even now a part of me doesn't want to be here, to be doing this. If you could only stick to a simple promise then none of this would have been necessary, but no. The mighty J.R. Ewing has to be scheming, has to be using everybody around him. I wanted to be your wife J.R.! I even helped you lock up my own sister, and for what? To be some cheap whore you hid away in a condo, expected to sit around day and night waiting for you to call? Some life J.R.! Some life!"
She was shaking now and the gun was becoming unsteady so she held it tighter, squeezing the trigger slightly in her eagerness to maintain control. J.R. flinched.
"Well Kristin I don't know what you want me to say sugar. I told you it wouldn't be easy to get my mamma and daddy to accept you on Southfork. I only got Sue Ellen committed to a sanatorium tonight. These things take time and I don't see what you hope to achieve by shooting me. I mean, to throw away the chance to be Mrs J.R. Ewing and trade it all in for life in prison? And that's if they don't kill you. Well it sure don't make much sense to me." Doubt was creeping into her mind. He could see it. "Everything was moving as planned. I told you that these things take time, and then you let that wooden-headed Alan Beam talk you into some hair-brained scheme to blackmail old J.R. Did you honestly think Hank Johnson wouldn't call me before sending you all those papers, huh? And then what was I supposed to do? Just go on trusting you? Honey you know old J.R. better than that. No you're pointing that gun at the wrong person. It's Alan Beam that brought you here but I'll get him for you, I swear it. First thing tomorrow I'll have him arrested for rape just like I said I would. And then you and me can go back exactly as we were. You can have it all Kristin. You can have it all. But that choice is yours, not mine. The next move is yours honey, now what's it going to be?"
He had grown in confidence as he started to make promises, promises that J.R. knew would fulfil every one of Kristin's wildest dreams. It now seemed that after coming into the Ewing Building to kill J.R., tired of his lies, from that position of strength Kristin was now the one in the corner. She was faced with either life in prison for murder or going on believing in something she knew in her heart would never happen: that J.R. would ever marry her. Only the great J.R. Ewing could have engineered this advantage from imminent death but the battle was not won and he was far from calm. The gun was lowering though by the time Kristin spoke again.
"You've promised me this before J.R. and never delivered. Nothing changes. Nothing ever changes. I won't wait around forever anymore. I won't!"
"But things are different now honey. I got Bobby and his tramp wife off of Southfork, Sue Ellen is being taken away as we speak, and my daddy is going to be nursing mamma over the heartbreak for months. There ain't gonna be no one around to run my life; not at the office and not at home. I am free to come and go as I please and soon I can divorce Sue Ellen just like daddy divorced his first wife and nobody can do a damn thing about it because I'm just doing what my daddy did. So you see in time we can both get exactly what we want: each other. But if you pull that trigger…" He stood up and moved around to Kristin who allowed him close, but the gun was still pointed at him. "If you pull that trigger then everything I have been working for, and everything you ever wanted for that matter, it all goes away just like that. We both have the world exactly as we want it. Don't ruin it now. Don't throw it all away."
He moved behind her and put his hands on both shoulders, kissing her neck. She fought and then leaned into it and he knew he had finally won. The situation was defusing.
"Oh J.R., I don't know what I'm doing anymore. I just… I love you so much and the thought of living without you, the thought of you sending me away… well I don't know what I'd do without you." Kristin spun around and hugged him tightly, dropping the gun at her feet. "I'll wait J.R. I'll wait no matter how long it takes if things are as you say they are. With Bobby and Sue Ellen off Southfork forever nothing can stop us from being together. Nothing can stop us from being married."
J.R. returned the tight embrace. He saw the gun fall and a trademark smile stretched across his face, not that Kristin could see it. "Kristin… I promise that sooner than you think, you are going to get exactly what you deserve."
