Chapter 1: Shot Down
Today was the day!
Yellow was finally going to tell Red how she felt. Today… just felt right. The sun was shining, and it was beautiful outside. The 17-year old placed her big hat on her head as she stepped out of her Viridian home. Yellow didn't need to disguise herself, anymore. Anyone could tell she was a girl now. But she just loved that hat!
She was wearing a yellow sundress with white flower designs on it. It went down to her knees, and looked adorable on her.
Yellow walked through the routes of grass and let out Chuchu along the way. "I'm sure you'll be happy to see Pika, today, Chuchu!" She joyfully told her little yellow friend.
They greeted the many Pokémon as they approached Pallet Town. They were surprised to find Red coming towards them in Route 1.
"Hey, Red!" the energized healer shouted. She stopped in her tracks as he met up with them. Pika was on his shoulder.
"Oh, hi Yellow! That's a pretty dress." He greeted his friend with a smile.
Yellow could feel a blush rising to her cheeks. "Th-Thank you, Red. So, what brings you here? I was just on my way to Pallet town to see you!"
Red looked nervous. "Yea, I thought it'd be better if I met you in Viridian, instead! Sorry, I should've called, first! So, do you wanna take a walk with me?" He grinned and scratched behind his neck, in the 'Red pose'.
Still blushing, Yellow accepted. They walked back to Viridian and decided to stroll through the forest. The pair walked all around, talking, laughing, and getting lost in the maze of that forest. When they got tired of walking, Red and Yellow stopped and sat in a clearing, leaning on a grand tree. Pika jumped off Red's shoulder, and Chuchu off Yellow's head, and the ran around in the clearing, playing. Red and Yellow decided to let all their other Pokémon out, too. Together, they stared up at the trees and many bug Pokémon.
Red turned his head towards Yellow. "So, why'd you wanna see me today?"
"Can't a girl hang out with her best friend?" she giggled in delight.
She's so cute, Red thought.
"Uh… Red? Is there something on my face? Are you okay? You're staring."
He looked down and blushed.
Yellow removed her had and placed it on her lap. Her long ponytail swayed in the wind as she looked up. Red thought she was breathtaking.
She took in her surroundings, inhaling through her nose, and exhaling through her mouth. "Well… there is one reason," she admitted. "I wanted to tell you ever since I first rescued you! But you thought I was a boy, so that would've made things really awkward…" Yellow looked at Red and blushed. "Red… Red, I l-love you."
"I love you, too, Yellow! You're my best friend!" Red replied, apparently not getting it. He scratched the back of his neck again.
"No, Red. I mean… I love you. Whenever I see you, my heart skips a beat. And whenever I talk to you, I hope that you're thinking about me afterwards and I linger in your mind. Whenever I feel like you're in trouble, my heart aches. Whenever I hear your voice, I blush. Red, you make my heart soar, and I feel like I'm on top of the world. And then… I get really sad and heartbroken thinking you don't feel the same. I just had to let that all out. I don't think I'll ever have the courage to do that again!" Yellow exhaled loudly and fell back on the grass, covering her face with her hands.
Red was a crimson color, but he pulled his hat down over her face before she could see. She sat back up as he removed his hat.
"Yellow…I, I wish I could return your feelings. But I know that I'd be lying to you and I both and I could never do that. You're my best friend, and I wouldn't want anything to interfere with that. I hope… I hope nothing will change that. I'd hate to lose you as a friend."
Even through his kind words, you could still hear Yellow's shattering heart. She knows that he still wanted to be her friend, but that didn't stop the tears from falling from rolling down her pale cheeks. The pair sat up as the sun started to set. Yellow wiped her eyes as Red smacked himself mentally. How could I do this to her? ! he thought, I know it's for the better, but still… Yellow…
Red hugged Yellow, which surprised her. She hugged him back anyways, and they stayed like that for a few minutes. His chin rested gently on her head as she sniffled on his vest. Finally, they pulled away.
"Do you wanna get a lift on Aero…or…?" Red started. Yellow shook her head. "Alright, let's walk."
Yellow put her hat back on as a long and awkward silence hung above them as they walked back to Viridian.
They finally reached her door. "Are you gonna be okay?" Red inquired before she opened her door.
Yellow nodded and stepped inside. She turned around, and spoke for the first time since the forest. "Get home safe… alright Red?"
Red smiled, "Yea, don't worry 'bout me. Bye, Yellow!"
"Goodbye, Red." His smile made her fall more and more in love with him, but it pained her even more knowing she couldn't have him.
Before she closed the door, Red said, "Oh, and one more thing!" Red leaned in and kissed Yellow on the cheek. "See you later, Yellow. And thanks for the walk." He whispered in her ear.
Yellow was flushed, but more confused than ever. She stood there in the doorway, with her hand on her cheek. She watched as Red's silhouette got smaller and smaller as it disappeared.
At the same time, Red was screaming himself on the inside. Why didn't I just tell her the truth? Why did I just kiss her? ! Now she thinks I'm sending her mixed signals! Grrr~!
What's Red hiding? ! Find out in Chapter 2: Blue Takes Over! ;) Review, please!
