Author's Notes: Another entry for Asking Me Where My Love Grows' First Kiss Challenge. Freeverse-ish.

Padma Patil was born

seventeen minutes

after her sister,

but she was left behind by a thousand years.

Parvati received her Hogwarts letter

seventeen minutes

before Padma did,

and after that the gap between them only widened.

Everyone said the girls would be in Gryffindor.

They were so brave

people said.

They were so fiery,

people said.

People only saw

She was the brave one,

she was the fiery one,

so she was the one people noticed.

And they assumed Padma was as her sister was.

Padma was put in Ravenclaw.

So funny,

people said,

she didn't strike them as the bookish type.

Perhaps if anyone had ever gotten to know her, they would have known that she

...loved books,

...loved magic,

...loved to learn.

Parvati made friends quickly.

Padma's only friends were books.

Parvati made top marks without trying.

Padma studied to scrape her E's.

Parvati got Harry Potter.

Padma got Ron Weasley.

Sixth year.

Double herbology with the Slytherins.

Padma met Blaise Zabini.

Blaise was everything

Padma wished

the rest of the world was.

He didn't even know Parvati.

When she spoke to him, Padma felt as though

she had finally found someone who knew her and cared for her because she was her,

not because she was her sister's twin.

Hogsmeade. First date.

He leaned over and kissed her.

Her first kiss.

Parvati had never been kissed.

At least Padma

could best her sister at one thing.

Padma lost her virginity

before her sister did.

It was a shameful victory, but the only one Padma had.
