The concept behind this oneshot is admittedly out of date, but I went ahead and wrote it anyway. The idea popped into my head when "the question" was put forward in Let's Kill Hitler. At the time, I assumed the question to be along the lines of "what is the meaning of life?" (42 by the way) or "why are we here?" In essence, the type of question Red vs. Blue had already asked and thanks to Church's words of wisdom, had answered. XD
Still, with the end of Series 6 revealing what the question is, and seems to indicate that answering it will mean the Silence shall fall (given the power of the Doctor's name) rather than silence falling over the universe as they tried with the TARDIS, the concept for this became kind of moot. Still, being a oneshot, I'm willing to go down the AR/AU route.
Silence Shall Fall
Silence shall fall when the question is answered.
Correction-silence must fall when the question is answered. The first question. Dating back to the beginning of the universe. The question that all lifeforms ask, yet are never answered. Not correctly anyway. And for two Blues in the most backwater canyon in the known universe, standing on top of their base in the sun, this incident is no exception.
"Church?" asks the blue coloured one.
"Yeah?" asks the cyan one.
"You ever wonder why we're here?"
And thus the question is asked yet again. A question that was once asked between a maroon and yellow (or orange, whatever) pair of troopers in what feels like a lifetime ago. The maroon asked, and the yellow one didn't even try to answer, given his infinite wisdom. Is Creation the by-product of cosmic coincidence? Is there a god? Will he ever get out of the Red Army? Pressing questions, and none that he knew the answer to. The question cannot be answered.
"You know Caboose, I used not to care. I just went along with orders, and hoped that everything would work out for me. But after all that's happened, you know what I've learned?"
Probably nothing. Attempt to answer the question all you want, little ghost. None can answer the question of why we are here. But feel free to try.
"It's not about hating the guy on the other side because someone told you to. I mean, you should hate someone because they're an arsehole, or a pervert, or snob, or they're lazy, or arrogant or an idiot or know-it-all. There are reasons to like somebody."
Well...that's true. Not the whole truth, but...
"There are reasons to dislike somebody," Caboose continues. "You don't hate a person because someone told you to. You have to learn to despise them on a personal level."
"Not because they're red, or because they're blue..."
Or because they wear bowties. They aren't cool!
"But because ya know them, and you see them every single day."
And because they wear fezzes. And...wait...no! The question's almost answered.
"And you can't stand them, because they're a complete and total fucking douchebag.
Impossible! Why are we here? The first question! Answered by this ghost/AI/Blue! Fool! Silence shall fall! It has already begun. You standing in silence, your subordinate standing in silence! Silence everywhere! Silence has fallen! Silence shall...
"I meant why are we up here in the sun, when we could be standing down there in the shade."
"Oh," says Church. "Yeah okay, let's go stand in the shade."
The silence...it was broken. The question was answered, yet silence didn't fall. How did...how did...?
I do not know. I don't know how the Blue one did this. I...I am so grateful for him, even if no-one else will be.
No-one will know that Michael J. Caboose just saved the universe.
