Disclaimer: No, Buffy The Vampire Slayer is not my show. If it was, this would have happened.

Summary: 'He's standing there in the light, about to burst into flames. So she says it.' Spuffy Drabble set during Chosen.

Rating: T for inevitable character death

A/N: A second, non-drabble version of this plot exists, but it's not that good yet. I might publish it as a second chapter, though, sort of like a bonus if you want me to. Please review!

The End

He's standing there in the light, about to burst into flames. So she says it.

"I love you."

"No, you don't. But thanks for saying it."

She wraps her arms around him and lays her head to his chest. She can feel him take a surprised breath. But she wants to be here and it fills him with wonder.

Buffy still isn't sure she loves this vampire who went out to get a soul for her, but she does know she cannot let him die alone.

And so the fire consumes them both and they've never felt safer. They're home.

A/N: I know, I know. We all would have loved for Spike to survive and for him and Buffy to finally have this loving relationship that we all know they could have had. But the truth is, I don't see tham having a future. Buffy is - despite fandom myths - not immortal and she would never consider becoming a vampire. She wouldn't choose to be with Spike, because in the end, she does want a human life. Even if she ended up with Spike and didn't die within the next ten years, Spike would watch her die as an old woman, and try as I might, I cannot imagine this to be very romantic. So no happy ending where they live happily ever after. In my head, they just die happily ever after.
