"Trick or treat!" four-year old Dean yelled, his voice muffled by the Batman mask he wore as he held out his bright orange jack-o-lantern bucket.
"Well, aren't you adorable?" the elderly woman asked, tossing miniature packages of candy into the pail before turning her attention to the other visitors standing on her front porch. "And you are too precious, sweetie," she cooed at the baby dressed as Robin.
"That's Sammy. He's my sidekick," Dean announced proudly, beaming up at his baby brother held securely in his mother's arms.
Mary smiled, briefly burying her face in her baby's hair; breathing his scent and this moment; knowing in two days, her deal would come due...and everything would change.
