I'm back everyone with this new chapter of Merlin: The coming of Emrys. Please enjoy and sorry for the ridiculously long wait.
Chapter 3 –Dealing with unforeseen complications
Gwen liked to believe she was a sensible woman; after all, she was the Lady Morgana's personal servant after all and it took brains and wit to keep up with her mistress.
Recently she had heard of Lady Morgana's increasing nightmares and thought she would help. She was currently standing in front of Gaius's chambers with the door cracked open. She was merely going to knock and wait for the man to answer the door when she heard voices on the other side.
Now Gwen was not nosy like many ladies at the court but these voices were unfamiliar to her and she knew everyone in the castle. So she slowly cracked the door open and peered inside. She was Gaius conversing with two young men that she did not recognize. She was about to leave when she heard Gaius mention teaching magic and the boy with the big ears mention the fact he had been living with the druids she gasped but none of the occupants in the room seemed to notice.
Gwen opened the door a bit more and took a small step into the room. Again, no one noticed her until strange markings appeared on the boy's body and mentioned Dragons and being a lord of them whatever that meant she let out an audible gasp and accidentally pushed the door all the way open.
It was then that the occupants in the room turned around and fixed their gazes on her. No one in the room moved a muscle or said a word. Panic started to form in her brain telling her to run. Gaius was associating with someone who had just made scary looking marks appear on his body and had called himself a Dragonlord.
This was bad, very very bad. She had to warn the king immediately of the threat. She knew Gaius had practiced magic in the past he had told her so. He also told her that he no longer practiced it, which was clearly a lie. She felt betrayed and turned to run out the door but felt herself slipping into unconsciousness instead. Just before fainting, she felt a strong pair of arms grasp her.
Gaius watched, as the sense of panic grew on Gwen's face "Not good, Gwen is not fond of magic and will tell the king. "He thought to himself in a panic.
Then Merlin raised his hand and muttered a spell under his breath. The effects of the spell were immediate and Gaius watched as Gwen's retreating form fell forward. He also saw Lancelot grab her and lower her gently to the floor.
Gaius turned on Merlin "What did you do to her?" Gaius demanded.
Merlin lowered his hand "She was going to escape and cause me further grief so I put her to sleep with a simple spell. She'll wake in a couple of minutes; unfortunately she'll remember everything which still makes her a liability." Merlin said in an annoyed tone.
"What should I do with her?" Lancelot questioned.
Gaius rubbed his temples "I'm too old for this. Place her on the bed in the next room young man."
With Lancelot, tending to Gwen Gaius turned towards Merlin "Why should I help you boy. Yes, I know of
The Voice but why should I help you master it? For all I know you could turn on Camelot."
"You have a valid point and a right to be suspicious Gaius. I assure you though that I am not a threat to anyone. I am merely trying to learn how to use this power so I don't hurt anyone. My magic is also innate and I don't know why I have it. I am searching for answers, and the druids told me I would find those answers with you Gaius." Merlin retorted.
"You sound sincere and the Druids are a peaceful people. Balinor and Hunith were good people and you are their son, but that doesn't change the fact that you are a potential threat to this kingdom." Gaius shot back.
"You're right Gaius and I am well aware of the fact that I am dangerous. I admit I hate Uther and what he did during the purge; he hunted my father into Cenred's realm where magic isn't banned. I also know that killing Uther would only reinforce people's hatred of magic; the purge would begin all over again. I don't condone what Uther did, but I am of the belief that a great tragedy befell him involving magic that led him to hate and kill all magic practitioners he could. I can relate to that and it makes me feel sorry for him. I have no intention of killing him, I am a better man than Uther and killing him and trying to destroy Camelot out of revenge would only lower me to his level." Merlin argued back.
Gaius was stumped this boy admitted to hating Uther outright but at the same time provided a sound and believable argument as to why killing Uther would only make more problems. This young man was very intelligent and could form concise and logical arguments. Gaius sighed again and started to feel his age "What of your friend Lancelot why is he here with you?" Gaius asked.
"I wish to be a knight of Camelot, and serve the people." Lancelot answered as he returned from tending to the unconscious servant.
Gaius scoffed "You cannot be a knight young man. Only those of noble birth may become knights."
"I will find a way to become a knight I'm sure the king would make an exception if I was given the chance to prove myself." Lancelot said confidently.
"He would do no such thing lad. The laws of Camelot regarding knights cannot be changed for it goes against their very code, and I assume you already know the knight's code if you wish to become a knight and you know that they will never break their knightly code." Gaius accused.
Lancelot nodded "I know that already Gaius, but I wish for nothing more than to protect the kingdom. I am aware that this foray is useless but I must try."
Merlin patted his friend's shoulder "Face it my friend I warned you this was a pointless task, but perhaps a chance will present itself for you to protect the kingdom in another way." Merlin said reassuringly.
"How would that come to pass?" Lancelot questioned.
Merlin chuckled "I have found that where I go trouble follows, but I always find an opportunity presents itself that allows me to solve the problem. Perhaps if you stick with me such an opportunity shall present itself to you." Merlin finished
Lancelot smiled and slapped Merlin on the shoulder "Perhaps you are right Merlin. We always found ourselves in problematic situations on our way here. Yet you always seemed to find a way out of it."
"That's me the trouble magnet. Sorcerers, bandits, angry drunks, and the occasional magical beast seem to be lured to me. It must be my charming personality and clever wit." Merlin joked.
Gaius frowned "This is no time to make jokes Merlin. Back to the subject at hand you're argument is logical believable so I will share with you what I know about the voice. This is a serious matter and we still have young Gwen to worry about, the girl is like a granddaughter to me but does not like magic and is weary of it. She is a problem. You are responsible for this mess and you must find a way out of it or leave Camelot."
Merlin quirked an eyebrow "Tell me about Gwen Gaius, what is she like?" Merlin questioned.
"She is a levelheaded young woman with a sharp mind and surprisingly intelligent for a servant. She is very passionate about protecting the Kingdom and loathes incompetent fools." Gaius finished "Why do you ask?"
"I believe we can reason with her then if she is intelligent as you state she is." Merlin said with a grin.
Gaius had the feeling that if they got out of this situation unscathed Merlin would be a handful.
Merlin looked towards the second room and started towards it "The spell should be wearing off by now come let us see if we can reason with the woman." Merlin said
"What if this doesn't work Merlin? What then?" asked Lancelot?
Merlin stopped and looked over his shoulder at his recently acquired friend "I can threaten her family if she tells anyone, or her mistress. I can cast a spell that would allow me to control her mind and body if I want, I could erase her memories, or even kill her." Merlin stated
Lancelot and Gaius Looked at Merlin in horror "I really don't want to do any of those things though. So I'll try and reason with her." Merlin stated before they could protest.
"How could you think of doing such a thing?" Gaius questioned fiercely.
Merlin's expression became dark and his eyes became cold "My family was destroyed Gaius, my village was burned. I felt nothing but hated, and pain for the ones who did it and those emotions fueled my magic. I tracked down some of the men who participated. One group was horrified at what they had done and begged for forgiveness. I used my magic to hurt them before I let them go. After that, I tracked down another group who were laughing and saying the screams of the women they raped and the people they burned brought them delight. I killed them Gaius all twenty of them but not before, I tortured some of them. Their screams for mercy only made me madder. I used my magic to do terrible things to them Gaius and I found that I enjoyed every second of it. However when they were all dead I realized they were just hired help they didn't know anything about the reason for the attack on Ealdor but I tortured them anyway. It made me feel sick that I had stooped to their level. I felt shame and hated myself for what I had done. My revenge left me empty, and it left its mark. Doing things like that changes people, but I learned to fear my power Gaius. I don't want anyone to get hurt because of me and I want this to end peacefully. Now let's see if we can talk to her." Merlin finished as he turned and continued walking.
Gwen had awoken in time to hear Merlin's entire speech and that just made her even more frightened but she steeled herself to face this sorcerer, she would not show him any fear.
She saw him walk in and her resolve wavered, this boy could not be any older than she was yet he had spoken of doing things to her that seemed impossible. Just how powerful was he?
Merlin entered the room and saw Gwen standing there with a determined look on her face and rebellion in her eye and Merlin couldn't help himself as he started laughing.
Gwen was ready to face whatever he threw at her until he burst out laughing. That confused her and then angered her "What is so funny you evil dragon sorcerer?" Gwen demanded.
Merlin heard the name she had given him and laughed even harder.
"There is nothing funny about this situation!" Gwen shouted at him "Stop laughing you fool." She demanded
"I'm sorry my dear but the look on your face was priceless." Merlin said as he took in gulps of air.
"What are you going to do to me? Kill me perhaps, or will you erase my memory. Is that funny to you as well." She retorted
Merlin walked to the corner of the room and sat down in the chair. He calmly looked her over and then spoke "First off I am not as you put it an evil dragon sorcerer. Yes, I have magic that relates to dragons and yes I am a sorcerer but I am not evil. As to what I am going to do to you, I don't wish to kill you because you seem like a nice person from the way Gaius described you. I also don't wish to erase your memories because there is the chance that I would leave you brain dead." Merlin finished calmly
Gwen started to speak again when Merlin cut her off "I also have no wish to threaten you or harm you in any way shape or form." Merlin added
"Then what are you going to do to me?" she asked in a defiant tone "Turn me into a frog?"
Merlin laughed at that one "It takes a great deal of practice and experience for a sorcerer to change anyone but themselves into an animal shape. I have neither of those things, as for your question I simply wish to talk to you. Gaius said you are levelheaded so I have come in here to explain myself to you." Merlin retorted
"That's a hard thing to believe coming from someone who knocked me out with magic." Gwen spat
"You were panicking and would have run to the king immediately, by the time the guards made it here I would be long gone, and it would be Gaius's word against yours. Gaius would probably lie to save both of you and it would or would not work. I don't like seeing people hurt. If you don't wish to talk, I will simply leave with my friend and not return. You will not be harmed." Merlin smiled
Gwen took all of this in and processed it a part of her felt that she could trust this man and wanted to hear him out. He could have killed her but instead he was offering her the opportunity to listen to what he had to say and let her choose for herself. "Fine I'll give you a chance." Gwen said in a tight tone.
"Please sit on the bed this might take a while and standing can be tiresome." Merlin said as he swept a hand towards the bed.
Gwen sat down on the bed as requested and shot him a glare "Now talk sorcerer, explain to me why I should trust you." She said
"First of all my name is Merlin and my friend standing in the doorway is Lancelot. This is my story and how I came to be here." Merlin said.
Gwen settled in and listened.
3 Hours later
Gwen walked out of the room thoroughly impressed with what Merlin had to say. She had grilled him on his views of people without magic as well as his hatred of Uther, even the incident with the bandits. Merlin had provided a sincere and honest answer every time. The strange thing was she believed him. He was honest about his mistakes as well the lessons he learned with through them.
She realized that Merlin had seen and been through a lot, and that some of the things he saw and did would drive a lesser man insane.
She made her decision "I'll keep your secret Merlin, but you have to provide me with help should I ever need it. In turn I'll help you, but this doesn't mean that we are friends is that understood?" She finished
Merlin just smiled and nodded and with that, Gwen took the sleeping drought Gaius had prepared while they were talking and left to deliver it to her mistress.
"Do you think we can trust her Merlin?" Lancelot asked.
"She wasn't lying to us Lancelot I sensed that she was telling the truth. We can trust her for now. Come my friend I believe Gaius would like to speak with us" Merlin said
With that, the two friends walked out into Gaius's lab and he spoke to them of the night's upcoming feast and the parts they would play in it.
Unbeknownst to the two young men the witch had escaped and was now planning her revenge on Camelot and its king. Darkness was descending on Camelot and it's people and their only salvation ws blissfully unaware of the coming storm.
