Disclaimer: I do not own Harry Potter, if I did I wouldn't be writing fanfiction.
Summary: How much would Harry's world change if he was more observant and studious than he was in canon? If he were to take charge of his life? Answer: a lot.
Chapter One- The Truth is Out
Privet Drive was home to a family known as the Dursleys. A family that consisted of Petunia Dursley, a skinny women with a long neck, her husband Vernon Dursley who was a beefy sort of man, and their quite round son Dudley. They considered themselves normal but there was one element in their home that was not. Said element was a thin boy of ten, with a lightening shaped scar concealed by unruly black hair that stuck out in every direction and bright green eyes that hinted of something more than a mere boy of eleven. This was Harry Potter, the-boy-who-lived.
It was late morning and Harry was enjoying the temporary peace surrounding the house, knowing that these few moments of tranquility would soon be shattered by the Dursleys returning home. Today was the day they took Dudley to buy a new bike (the other one broke when Dudley left it in the parkway and Uncle Vernon ran over it). They could have taken Dudley anytime but apparently going somewhere on the last day of July was tradition. Every year they went somewhere while Harry was left behind. Harry had a feeling the only reason they took Dudley places was so they could show Harry how little his birthday meant to them, but Harry didn't mind as much this year as he did last year. Why? Ms. Figg his usual babysitter, was away and the Dursleys decided to leave Harry by himself... not without a spectacular tantrum from Dudley (Harry might be able to join them) and death threats (Break one thing boy, one thing and you be locked up until school starts), of course, but left him alone nonetheless.
Harry was watching tv, as long as he turned it off when he heard the car in the driveway and got back in his cupboard, he was fine. Right when Harry got comfortable there was a loud knocking and he jumped, looking wildly around. He didn't hear the car! Scrambling, Harry quickly turned off the tv and ran to his cupboard. He waited for the Dursleys to enter but the knocking continued, the sound slowly getting louder then... it stopped. Harry peeked out and when no sounds were heard he slowly approached the door.
Muttering was heard, and the door opened to reveal-a giant man! He was as tall as two people, his face overrun by his hair and his beard, but he had small beetle-like eyes that crinkled as he smiled at Harry.
"Harry, it good ter see you again!" The giant grabbed Harry into a hug.
Now, Harry was not accoustomed to people touching him, even his relatives, without some intent to hurt, so when he was hugged, Harry quickly got over his shock and tried to fight the giant off. The giant noticed and let go, hurt, though Harry didn't know why.
"Who are you!" Harry demanded as he backed away, trembling. "How do you know me? Did Uncle Vernon put you up to this?"
"Wha? No! Whos' Uncle Vernon?" The giant said, confused, but Harry didn't answer. "I'm Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts. You know all abou' that o' cours'."
"No I don't, and you didn't answer my questions." Harry accused. "What are you doing here? Who are you? How do you know me? Did Uncle Vernon tell you to do this? What's Hogwarts?"
"Like I said, I'm Rubeus Hagrid, Keeper of the Keys and Grounds at Hogwarts." The giant, Hagrid, said as he walked past Harry, made his way into the living room, and sat down.
"Are you going to answer my questions?" Harry asked, hoping the man would return when the Dursleys did.
"I will when yer give me a momen'. Let's see, I came ter see you Harry. I know you cause I knew yer parents, great wizards they were Harry, great wizards." The man sniffed and cleared his throat. "Why would yer uncle tell me to do this? An' Hogwarts is the best wizarding school run by non' other than the greastest headmaster Hogwarts has ever seen, Albus Dumbledore. You'll be famous there, not doubt abou' tha'."
"You knew my parents, before they died?" Harry asked ignoring the feeling of hope that sparked in his chest in favor of studying the man. Harry's disbelief was obvious on his face, cause the man suddenly spoke.
"Wait, wait jus' a momen'." The man said, digging in his coat pockets and once done handed Harry a small leather book, or so Harry thought, until he open it at Hagrid's request. Harry first noticed the couple in the photos. The women was pretty with dark red hair and bright green eyes...eyes that looked exactly like Harrys. Harry looked at the man. The man was tall, thin and he wore glasses. His black hair was just as unruly as Harry's. So these were his parents. Harry stared at his parents pictures, his eyes watering up as he did.
"Yer look just like your father but you got your mother's eyes." A gruff voice said, startling Harry from the photos. Hagrid was standing up (when did he get so close) and looking at the photos behind Harry's back.
"Hagrid! The photos are moving!" Harry yelped, as he looked at the photos again. The man and women laughed as they hugged each other then kissed one another. Starting over when the kiss ended. Harry flipped through the pictures, seeing all of them move.
"Of cours' they do. It's magic innit? Wizardin' photos an' all. What do you expect them to do? Stay still." Hagrid chuckled.
"Wizarding photos...wait! What do you mean magic?"
"Yes magic. Didn't the muggles tell you? Your a wizard Harry." Hagrid said to a stunned Harry.
"Very funny" Harry laughed. "I'm not a wizard, I'm Harry. Just Harry."
"They didn't tell you?" Hagrid growled and apologized when Harry stepped away, looking wary. Hagrid muttered under his breath then turned to Harry. "Well jus' Harry, did somethin' strange ever happen when you got mad or when you got scared, but yer couldn' explain it." Harry then remembered getting lost at some shopping center full of strangers but somehow appearing back at Privet Drive. The Dursleys were mad when they got back, and Harry starved for the weekend. He then remembered a toilet bursting when Dudley stuffed his head in it and just recently setting the boa constrictor on his cousin at the zoo, more specifically the glass vanishing and reappearing.
"Now that you know, I'm suppos' ter give this to you." Hagrid said giving Harry a letter addressed: Mr. H. Potter, The Cupboard under the stairs, 4 Privet Drive, Little Whinging, Surrey. Harry opened the envelope and took out the first paper reading:

Harry wondered at all the titles under the man Albus Dumbledore: Grand Scorcer? Warlock? Supreme Mugwump? International Confederation of Wizards? Then at the phrase 'we await your owl'. "Hagrid what do they mean when they say we await your owl?"
'Oh that reminds me." Hagris said writing a short letter. Professor, Just given Harry his letter. We'll get his supplies today. Hope your well. Hagrid. He rolled it up, tied it to an owl stuffed somewhere inside his coat and let it go. Harry watched it leave through the chimney before reading the next piece of paper.

"Hagrid, where can we get all of this stuff?" Harry asked. As far as Harry knew stores didn't sell this things. Not that he was saying much, Harry hardly went anywhere.
"Where wizards get everything in Britain. Diagon Alley o' cours'. Blimey Harry, don't you know anythin'?" Hagrid said.
"I know what they taught us in school but I don't know anything about what your talking about Hagrid." Harry frowned, remembering the earlier conversation. "Um... Hagrid...You said I would be famous?"
"You don't know...You don't know about...How can you not know? I saw Dumbledore leave a letter, explaining everything." Hagrid looked at Harry and resumed talking to himself. "McGonagall told Dumbledore not ter leave you these muggles. I didn't think I'd be the one ter tell you. It's best if you know now. Harry what I'm abou' ter tell you is all I know." Hagrid paused, continuing after Harry nodded. "It begins with a very dark, very powerful wizard, called himself- strange you not knowin' his name- everyon' does... don't say it o' cours' but they still know it."
"Why not?" Harry asked.
"Why not? Why not? Gulpin' Gargoyles Harry. People still scared. Yer didn't know how it was back then. Everyday people wer killed, tortured, some went missin'...terribl' things happened. Yer couldn't trust anyone. Kept to yerself."
"Hagrid what was his name?"
Hagrid opened his mouth but nothing came out. He tried again.
"Can you write it down?" Harry suggested.
"Nah, can' spell it. Alrigh, his name was-Voldemort." Hagrid shuttered. "Don' make me say it again. Anyway, he was very dark wizard Harry. Started lookin' for followers twenty years ago. Got 'em too- some were scared, some wanted power 'cause he was getting power, grew more an' more powerful everday I reckon'. He wanted to take over the wizarding world an' enslave the muggles too, killed anyone who stood against him. Great families fell, great wizards and witches- the Bones, the McKinnons, the Prewitts were killed, including yer parents. We don' know why he never asked 'em ter join, suppose he thought they were too good to be turned. All anyone knows is that Halloween ten years ago, he showed up at Godric's Hallow, an'-an' an' killed Lily and James. He tried to kill you too but- you didn't die."
Hagrid suddenly blew his nose. Harry felt a sharp pain from his scar as he imagined his parents dying, and saw a bright flash more clearly than ever before. Then he heard, for the first time in his life, a cold, cruel laugh. "So that's why everyone knows my name. I didn't died when Voldemort tried to kill me." Harry looked at Hagrid and asked "What happened to Voldemort?"
"Don' say his name!" Hagrid said as he flinched. "Say You-Know-Who. Anyway, noone knows what happened. That what makes you even more famous Harry. You-Know-Who was getting more powerful but you, jus' a baby, jus' a year old, survived. Noone knows why but he was gone. Some say he vanished, some say he was killed. Codswallop, in my opinion, he wasn't human enough to die. Some say he's out there, waiting, bidin' his time, but I don't believe it. Mos' likly out there too weak to live. That why yer famous Harry, somethin' about you finished him." Hagrid finished looking at Harry with warmth and respect that Harry wasn't sure he wanted. If he finished a dark powerful wizard why couldn't he defend himself from the Dursleys whenever they hit him. Harry was going to say as much when he heard the unmistakable sound of a car pulling up the driveway.
"Hagrid, Hagrid you have to leave. Now! Go-" Harry was cut off when the Dursleys walked in. They were talking but trailed off as they saw Harry out of his cupboard.
"BOY!" Yelled Uncle Vernon. "Get back here!" He yelled as Harry started to run, then seeing he wouldn't catch him, Uncle Vernon grabbed a vase and threw it at Harry's back, hitting his shoulder with an audible thud. Harry grunted loudly. His eyes silently pleading Hagrid to leave, leave so Harry wouldn't get into more trouble than he already was. Maybe he would just be hit a couple of times then be left alone in his cupboard.
"DURSLEY!" Hagrid thundered, whipping out an umbrella from his coat (what good would that do, Harry thought) and pointed it at Dudley. Uncle Vernon yelled "You'll pay for that boy!", and Dudley screamed as the umbrella pointed at him, then if possible Aunt Petunia screamed louder than Dudley, sobbing as she pointed at his round bottom. Aunt Petunia turned Dudley around and Harry saw- a pigs tail! What happened next Harry could only describe as choas. Uncle Vernon started throwing things at Harry (who dodged them all), shouting that it was his fault for the 'ruddy tail'. Aunt Petunia and Dudley screamed as they ran upstairs, Uncle Vernon following them yelling "Call the cops Petunia! Call the cops!" and a door slammed shut.
Harry shoulders shook with silent laughter as he saw the scene over and over in his head. The horrified expression on Dudleys face and the terror on Aunt Petunias. And the little tail on Dudleys butt.
"Blast. Was suppose ter turn 'im into a pig, guess he was too much of a pig already." Hagrid said.
Harry roared with laughter as he heard this. Hagrid chuckled with Harry then asked "Are you alright Harry?"
"I'm fine Hagrid," Harry said now chuckling. "Really, I am. Nothing I can't handle."
"Alright." Hagrid said, "but you tell me when hurts."
Harry didn't have the heart to tell Hagrid the truth, that he would most likely bruise from it, even laughing hurt. Harry mentally shook himself, just act natural and Hagrid would never notice. "So what are you going to do now?" he asked.
"I'm taking you ter Diagon Alley ter get your school supplies aint I? Didn't I tell you?" Hagrid said.
"Diagon Alley? What is that?"
"Wizarding place, sells everything you'll need for school and more. Now lets go." Hagrid began walking to the front door, turning around when he realized Harry wasn't following. "Harry?"
Harry studied Hagrid with calculating eyes, clutching the leather photo album in his hands, then nodded to himself and followed Hagrid to the door.
Hagrid waited and smiled at Harry but if anyone asked he what he felt then, he would have told them chills. Never has anyone stared at him like that, measuring him, and it suprised him that Harry James Potter was the first to do so.
Greetings everyone^^ This is my first fanfiction so I appricate all constructive critisim and any questions you may have.
As you have have noticed my story is a bit similiar to canon, this first chapter is as close to canon dialouge as I want to get but i might have to use canon dialouge if it can't be helped (letters). I don't want to use too much of the canon dialouge because I personally skip over parts when they sound too similar to the books. All of Harry's knowledge I will try to make realistic as well as Harry's power, meaning he will not become a super powerful wizard overnight. Any physical skills Harry may get will likewise not be earned in two weeks.
You may have noticed that Harry continues to refer to Hagrid as the giant or the man even after Hagrid told him his name. It was intentional. Harry doesn't know him, so it creates a barrier thats breached after Hagrid proved he knew Harry's parents. O and Petunia didn't mention Lily but that will most likely come out at a different time. I think I have nothing more to add so please r&r.
