"God, I hate this class."
"Do you believe in God? Since you're a muggle-born and all. Do you do that praying thing they talked about in Muggle Studies?"
"What in hell are you going on about, Sirius? Why do you have to turn a simple complaint about Binns into a religion thing?"
"Because I'm bored and curious and he'll never notice we're not paying attention. Do you?"
"Well... I dunno. I suppose. I don't really think about it much. My mum and dad are Christian - which is a type of religion, they believe in God, I mean - so I went to church showing up."
"So you do."
"Well, it's complicated. Because the bible - that's this book of stories and rules and stuff about God's disciples, followers, you know - it's important, it's like, I dunno, just part of the whole thing - anyway, it says witches are bad. That we'll all go to hell - you burn for eternity there, very torturous and painful, they say - and, I dunno, that seems wrong to me."
"Merlin, Lily, your face is all red! I didn't mean to upset you."
"No, no, I'm not upset. I'm just kind of working myself into a frenzy, because - "
"Yeah, I know how you get. Keep on about this bible shit, then."
"Right. Anyway. I can't imagine you or James or Sev - shut up, Sirius - or Serena or anyone burning in hell for all eternity. You're all such good people. Practicing magic shouldn't automatically mean we're damned, you know?"
"And, you know, look at your mum. According to her, if she was religious, I'd most likely be damned for being muggle-born."
"She's a bitch."
"(I didn't mean to bring her up, sorry.) But anyway. How could millions of people worldwide be damned for being born? It makes no sense. But at the same time, I think God must exist, or something must, anyway. Because how else could we even exist? All this beauty and pain and love and life? We couldn't have just appeared. I think something must have created us."
"You're not making any sense, Lily."
"No, I am, really, I am! I just... Yes, I've got it. I believe in God, I'm fairly certain. But not in religion, definitely no religion."
"Don't look at me like that! So do you? Believe in God?"
"Well, don't justify yourself or anything. One word is really enough to answer such a huge question. Really. Don't overexert yourself."
"Lily, there's absolutely no way I could ever top a rant like the one you just went off on. I was just curious. A simple yes or no would have sufficed. Although I admit that was quite fascinating. Not to mention amusing."
"You're a prat."
"I know it."
"Miss Aarons! Mister Black!"
"...It's Evans, sir. Evans."
"Yes, yes, Evans. We haven't time for you to be distracting Mr. Black like this. Do pay attention. N. E. W. T.s are only six months away. We must get through the rise of Elfandra the Giantess Queen by next week!"
