The following chilly Monday, Harry, Ron, and Hermione headed down to the Great Hall for breakfast.
"I wonder what we're having..." Harry wondered outloud as they strolled in. He and Hermione stopped walking when Ron had stopped, and a huge smile spread across his face. "What?" he said, and they looked in the direction that Ron was looking at.
Apparently, it was at the Ravenclaw table. And Ron was staring right at Luna as she ate. Today, her hair was pinned back behind her eyes, some strands in a ponytail.
"I think I'm going to sit with my girlfriend, today," Ron said.
"Understandable." Harry grinned as Hermione's eyes brightened when Ron had said, 'girlfriend'. "You go have fun. We'll see you in class."
Ron nodded and walked over to the Ravenclaw table. He ignored the comments made by the Slytherins and planted himself down next to Luna.
"Hey, Luna," he said, and she looked up, smiling when she saw him.
"Hello, Ronald," she said. "How's your morning going for you so far?"
"Just got better," he replied with a smile. "Do you mind?"
"No, not at all. And you don't have to ask."
I wonder if this is a good time to kiss her, Ron thought, but he brushed the thought off as she started eating. He would wait. He could kiss her anytime he wanted to now.
Even though breakfast was about thirty minutes long, Ron and Luna were both finished eating within fifteen. During this time period, Luna's hand had crept over to his, and they had smiled at each other at this exchange.
"Would you like to walk me to class?" Luna asked him. "If we leave now, you'll have time to get to your class as well and I don't want you to be late."
"Okay," said Ron, and they both stood, their hands still intertwined. "Let's go."
After gathering up their things, they left the Great Hall, catching the eyes of other on-lookers, their eyes narrowing on their intwined hands. They walked in silence together, but it was peaceful silence. And Ron didn't feel awkward at all. As a matter of fact, this-them being together-just felt so right. And Luna was his as he was hers.
When they approached the door to Luna's class, Ron felt a little disappointed. He wouldn't see her for two hours.
"I'll see you later, Ron," said Luna, leaning up on her tiptoes and kissing him on the cheek. Her lips lingered there for a few seconds longer than a usual kiss on the cheek before pulling back and smiling at him.
Ron smiled back at her. "Bye."
Before she could do anything, he had grasped her hand and pulled her close, leaning down and pressing his lips against hers. Luna gasped a little, but she kissed him back softly. Their breathing grew steadily heavier as his big hands slipped underneath her robes, gripping her waist and pulling her closer. Her fingers traced down his jawline, and her free hand cupped the side of his neck.
Now Ron knew what it felt like to snog a girl you really cared about; now he understood when Harry "never wanted to let Hermione go at times like these", and he felt sympathy for his two best friends for snogging in public. But in a way, they were in private, and Ron didn't care who stopped by to watch. He was in absolute bliss.
Ron's lips were still before Luna's were. When she had realized this, she had stopped kissing him and blushed. Ron just chuckled and started kissing her again. Luna's lips began moving against his again, and her fingers ran through his hair.
Luna started talking through kisses after another long minute.
"Ron..." Kiss. "you have to..." Kiss. "go..." Kiss. "before you're late..." Kiss.
"I don't care," Ron murmured, cupping her face now as they kissed.
Luna smiled in the kiss. "Ronald Bilius..."
Ron pulled away, resting his forehead against hers. "Somehow, I hate it when my mum threatens me like that, but when you do it, I really like it."
"Mmm." Luna kissed him one more time. "I should probably write to her...say that you're skipping class..."
Ron pulled away fully, frowning a little. "You're evil."
Luna giggled and wrapped her arms around his neck in a hug, and Ron's arms wrapped around her in return. "I know," she whispered in his ear, kissing it before pulling back. "Goodbye, Ronald."
"Bye." Ron smiled at her, releasing her. He started walking away when she suddenly called out:
"Don't let the wrackspurts get to you!"
Ron looked over his shoulder and smiled at her again. "Will do!"
Wrackspurts never seemed so lovely.
