As the last fortifications around Hogwarts were put up, two women stood at the top of one of the towers, looking out over the grounds. They stood side by side, hands clasped in almost sisterly attempts to comfort each other, as they looked out over the grounds.
"They're coming," Luna observed. The wind whipped through her long dirty blonde hair, and she shook it back, letting it stream out behind her.
Tonks nodded. "We've only got a few minutes before they get here, I think."
Luna looked up at the older woman, her silver-grey eyes wide and earnest and full of fear, but at the same time full of resolve.
"We're going to win," she said, so simply that she seemed to be stating a fact rather than just saying something she hoped. "I just hope that we live too."
Tonks's lips twitched despite the seriousness of the situation. Luna always had that effect on her, and she found herself grinning. "Yeah, I hope so too."
"If you live and I don't," Luna said, quite matter-of-factly, "please give Daddy my love and tell him to look after the nargles, and tell Draco thank you for everything and tell Ginny that she's one of the nicest girls I've ever known, and tell Harry thank you for taking me to the party last year. All right?"
"Yeah," said Tonks, "and if you live and I don't, then give Remus a hug from me and make sure Teddy's safe, and… and maybe dye a little bit of your hair pink to remember me by?" she suggested, voice cracking slightly.
Luna nodded, just as there was the sound of an explosion from beneath them.
"Good luck, then," Tonks said, giving Luna's hand a squeeze.
"Good luck," agreed Luna. She hesitated for a second, then stood up on her tiptoes and kissed Tonks very lightly on the lips.
Tonks looked at her in surprise. "What was that for?"
"If I die," Luna said, "I wanted to die having kissed you."
Tonks smiled once again, then wrapped her arms tightly around the younger girl, and kissed her as well, rather sloppily, knotting her hands in Luna's long blonde tangles, even as they heard the sounds of the battle beneath them. At last she drew back and grinned.
"If I die," she said, "I wanted to die having kissed you too. Now let's go down and fight so that neither of us die."
