Defiance: The Anthology

Scene in Defiance:
The story takes place just after the scene where Arkady forces Chaya to give him more food. In this scene,an angry Asael comes in and breaks Arkady's hold on his wife and a fight broke off between them causing them to pull out their knives against each other. A sick Tuvia restores the order by ordering Arkady to get back in line and both giving them half-rations for food. The story starts off with the conversation between Tuvia, Arkady and Asael.

As said before, this is between Asael and Chaya and what I thought would be a great scene as a follow-up of what just happened.

"Next time, I cut off your nose, pisher," sneered Arkady. Asael fought against the grip of the men holding him down.

"Whassa problem, Arkady?" asked Tuvia, his words slurred after his heavy drinking. Arkady eyed him.

"Those who risk their lives to bring back food deserves a larger portion than those who risk nothing,"

"Everyone gets the same portion," Asael claimed, defiant and angry. Arkady makes a menacing face at Asael; his eyes pierced like a knife.

"Not when you're serving, pisher. I see you digging to the bottom of the pot for your little forest cutie and her parents-"

"She is my wife!"

Asael lifted his foot off the ankle-deep snow with a hard-set mouth and a glare towards Arkady's direction. Tuvia's gone mad drunk and now there was someone who had the power to question Tuvia's authority at the camp. He shivered both in the cold and in anger. The disrespect given to his wife frustrated him and he felt anger bubble deep inside, quickly warming up his insides.

He stormed towards Chaya, still at work, giving encouragement to everyone as she poured the hot soup in their bowls. He whispered to her in a frustrated, almost angry tone and she shook her head and continued to pour. He walked a few metres behind the kitchen detail and asked for Bella. He pulled her under the cover of the detail and forced her, in a gentle way, to take Chaya's place. He took Chaya away from them and cupped her cheek.

"Are you alright?" he asked, desperation clear in his voice.

"I'm fine," she replied, holding his arm. Asael bit his lip. She was lying. He gently lifted her left arm and pulled her sleeves up, revealing a large bruise, already purple from Arkady's rough treatment. He gritted his teeth. He let her go and ran a frustrated hand through his hair and muttered a curse.

"Asael," she said, grabbing his arm. "I'm fine. Please."

"No you are not," he said. "Who does he think he is to hurt you like that? He does not have the right!"

Chaya calmed him down by holding his face with her hands. She called his name twice until he finally looked at her.

"I am fine," she said, her eyes pleading and her voice, breaking with emotions. "Please don't fight him, please. I don't want you to get hurt. It's just a bruiseā€¦ besides I-"

"I love you," he whispered, breaking her in mid-sentence. She looked at him and lifted his face up. She gentle caressed his cheek and gave him a kiss and whispered it back to him. Their foreheads remained touched until he let her go back to her duties.

Asael looked up and saw Arkady looking at him with a smirk on his face and a bottle of vodka in hand. He lifted the bottle in the air and mouthed, "Muzzletov."

He gritted his teeth and walked away. He would pay for what he did.
