Disclaimer: I don't own them. I just write, abuse and then heal the boys for the fun of it.
Author Note: Fellow author, T.L. Arens, decided to feed the muse a few cookies along with a simple plotlet so we'll see where this goes and which of the boys get hurt worse. While some things from the show may seem different or may happen at different times, I will still keep the basic parts and stuff in tact so just bear with me.
"Bobby, pick up. I can't do this anymore. Something in my gut is just screaming that this is all wrong or something," refusing to growl at the voicemail thing he'd gotten when placing another call to Bobby Singer, Dean Winchester tossed the thing on the seat of the 1967 Chevy Impala that he'd just recently taken out of storage when he made his most recent decision.
For Dean, the past year and half had been like a nightmare that he couldn't wake up from. He'd watched his little brother, his whole reason for even living if he was honest with himself since he'd devoted most of his life to taking care of Sam, willingly fall into a damn hole in the ground just to trap both Lucifer and an enraged Michael for eternity and saved the planet from the Apocalypse.
That day in Stull Cemetery still felt like a kick in the gut to him since he'd gone there in the first place to make sure his brother didn't die alone. Not only did Sam trap himself along with two stupid Archangels but that left Dean in Limbo because without Sam, without a true purpose he wasn't sure what to do other than find a way to either die or free his pain in the ass little brother.
He'd gone to Lisa originally because Sam had asked him to, even though he'd stick to his story that he never did commit to an actual promise of going. He was basically a basket case when he showed up on her door and she'd taken him in without question. She dealt with his mood swings, the drinking, his obsessive need to find a way to break Sam free and everything else without complaint.
Slowly he adjusted to her and her son, Ben but he never stopped longing for the little brother he failed. Dean had promised Sam that he would protect him and he felt like a huge failure in that department and had ever since Dean had gone to Hell in exchange for Sam's life and the two brothers grew apart thanks to both Angel and Demon interference.
Being a hunter for as long as he could remember, Dean was surprised when he could slip out of that life and into what was supposed to be a normal 9-to-5 life. Get up, go to work in construction, come home to dinner with Lisa and Ben like a normal family…except deep down he knew his family was stuck being tortured and Dean never gave up on the idea of either freeing Sam or finally dying.
Deciding against phoning the grizzled old hunter/junkman who had been like a surrogate father to both Winchester even before their own Dad died. Dean had kept his distance from Bobby too these past eighteen months but now, after some weird things started his dormant hunter's senses screaming he'd decided it was time to act.
Lisa told him he was being paranoid when he said that someone was tailing him. She believed his unburied obsession with freeing Sam had finally made him begin to crack…which pissed him off because no one had ever understood his own burning need to keep that one damn promise he'd made to his chubby faced baby brother the night he'd carried him from their burning house.
At first, Dean ignored the tiny little tells that he'd notice but when he realized someone had been screwing in the locked garage that he kept the Impala then he knew he was not crazy and that someone, hunter, demon or rogue Angel was snooping too close than he liked so after a final bitter and much more vocal argument with Lisa than Dean had expected he took the car that had been home to him and Sam since their childhood, what he knew he'd need and headed for South Dakota and the one man he knew could help him two-fold.
Dean knew that Bobby would believe him when he said that someone, a professional, was tracking him. He knew the older man would help him find out who but he also hoped he could convince Bobby to help him track a way to open the Cage just long enough to yank Sam's ass out while keeping Michael and Lucifer locked in tight.
Turning off the highway onto the unpaved road that would lead him to the Singer Salvage Yard, Dean's tired green eyes landed on the rubbery black band that he'd hung on the Impala's rearview mirror the day after he realized Sam was gone and not coming back.
Once upon a time, he remembered that they both had had those bands. He couldn't remember why but he knew that he'd given Sam one because he'd always been tugging on his and Sam had only stopped wearing his the night before Detroit happened and he gave it to Dean…for safekeeping, he'd said with the same watery puppy dog eyes that never failed to make Dean cave.
Flipping the band with a finger, he then touched the one he'd put back on the morning he left Lisa to come here. He wasn't sure why he'd put it back on, or why he'd decided to wear the silver ring he'd always worn and stopped after the whole Apocalypse thing started.
Dean just wished he still had the gold amulet Sam had given him the Christmas he'd been twelve and Sam was eight but he'd tossed that out in a fit of despair and lack of faith in the little brother he had raised and always loved.
"Damn it, Sammy," he muttered, pinching the bridge of his nose while pulling up behind one of Bobby's junk cars.
Stepping from the Impala, Dean's senses were once again ringing warnings but this time he ignored them as both fatigue and loss. This was Bobby's place and he knew it was guarded, shielded and warded against pretty near any type of evil that could come knocking so taking his duffel out of the trunk, he stepped to porch and pounded on the door when his first knock didn't get a response.
More cautious now, Dean opened the unlocked door which made him pause just inside the door to pull his .45 out from under his blue jean jacket before going any further. "Bobby? You here or what?" he shouted, hunter's eyes now scanning for possible traps or attacks when he stepped into the library to frown. "You grow deaf since we last talked or what?"
Feeling like screaming or banging the idjit's head in, Bobby Singer groaned inwardly while trying to warn the boy away before it was too late. "Dean…" he saw the moment when Dean realized something was wrong because the boy's whole body language went from relaxed to on guard. "Dean…don't…"
"Bobby, what the hell?" seeing that the older man was bleeding from a scalp graze and appeared to be tied to the desk chair, Dean was lowering the shotgun only to whirl when a step sounded from behind him then he was seeing stars, hearing Bobby shout for him and then a voice he never expected to hear again seemed to explode in his skull.
"Hey, Dean. We need to talk…before I rip your heart out."
Falling into darkness even as something sharp was piercing his neck, Dean's eyes struggled to focus once more then blurred out with the image of… "Sammy?"
Author Note: Yeah, I know. This was evil. Did Dean hear Sam, why did Dean hear his brother when Sam should be in the Cage? And if it is Sam, why the heck is he hunting his big brother? All very good questions, true believers. Stay tuned for more.
