The Enemy Unveiled
"Damn them!" a voice roared through the darkness of the laboratory, causing a rat that was hiding under a table to squeak and begin skittering away. However, it had not made it halfway across the room before a blast of yellow energy seared it into nothingness. The origin of the Ki blast, an old man with dark skin and wearing baggy clothes, grunted and began moving towards the table. "I thought it was just those Sailor Scouts I would be dealing with, but no!" The man began grinding his teeth from rage. "Several newcomers keep foiling my plans, that Saiyaman, his brother, and that Gotenks. Damn them all!" The man sent another Ki blast directed at one of the holding tanks where Android 12 had once resided. "I perfected Androids 10, 11, and 12 just for the purpose of capturing those Sailor Scouts, and they all got so close!" The man, who had closed his eyes in his rage, opened them to stare at the creation laying on the table. "But you, my great creation, you shall destroy those three and bring the Sailor Scouts to me!" He pressed a button on the remote he held in his hand and watched as his creation opened its eyes. "Rise my great creation! It is time for those fools to know the might of Mecha Cell!"
Juuban High was once again open after the weekend, and all of the students were bustling around the courtyard for lunch once again. As always, four girls gathered in one corner of the courtyard to talk together.
"Hey all!" Minako said with a gleeful wink.
"What're you so happy about?" Makoto groaned. "I just had a test in Physics, and I think I died a little inside." Minako rolled her eyes.
"I'm happy because today is the day that Son Gohan asks me out on a date!" Minako declared triumphantly. The entire group let out a collective sigh of embarrassment.
"Minako, are you really still on about that?" Ami sighed.
"Yeah Minako," Makoto added, "I think we scarred the poor guy for life last Saturday." Minako huffed.
"Well, just so you know, Umino, who is essentially Gohan's best friend here, told me that Gohan told him that he will ask one of us out." The three other girls let out cries of shock.
"Us?" Ami asked, her face becoming a deep red.
"But I already have a boyfriend!" Usagi cried. Makoto turned towards Minako.
"And how do you know it'll be you?" she challenged. Minako winked playfully.
"Because I'm the beautiful one, that's why!" Minako declared proudly. Makoto sighed.
"Yeah we will," Minako said with a sly grin, "because here he comes!" All four girls turned to look at Gohan, who had just stopped a few feet short of them. Both Minako and Makoto let out inward sighs of longing.
"Hey," Gohan said with an embarrassed grin. Usagi simply nodded, Ami did absolutely nothing, and Minako and Makoto simply drooled. "Er," he muttered, "could I talk to-"
"Yes I will go out with you!" Minako declared and leapt into his arms. Gohan blushed.
"Actually, it wasn't you I wanted to talk to." Usagi swore she could hear Minako's heart break. He put her down, and blushed deeply when he heard her start to sniffle.
"I'm fine," she replied when he asked her on her condition. Gohan turned to the other three.
"I wanted to talk to… er…" Gohan's blush rose even higher. "Well…Ami?" A loud thump resounded as Ami fainted.
"Oh my gosh!" Usagi cried, and kneeled next to Ami. "She's gone into emotional shock!" Gohan looked horrified.
"Oh god!" he moaned. "All I wanted to do was ask Ami to go to that new restaurant with me. I didn't expect to send both her and Minako into emotional shock."
"It's okay," Makoto assured him. "Ami just isn't used to guys asking her out, and Minako should be back on her feet in about five minutes."
"And I'm sure that Ami will accept!" Usagi said brightly. Makoto nodded affirmation.
"And even if she doesn't want to, we'll make her anyway," she said.
"You're worse than my mom!" Gohan laughed.
"But why?" Ami moaned as Makoto forced a dress over her head. After school, the other girls had ambushed Ami and were now forcing her to prepare for a date with Gohan.
"Because if I can't have Gohan, then I want a nice girl like you to have him!" Makoto said firmly. Ami's head popped out of the dress' head hole and sighed.
"Why couldn't I have just worn my Juuban uniform?" Minako, who had recovered miraculously, puffed up indignantly.
"That's blasphemous talk Ami!" Minako huffed. She pulled out a case of her own makeup.
"Oh please no, Minako! Ami begged as she saw Minako moving a brush in her direction. Makoto pinned her to the chair and held her head steady.
"You are going to look beautiful and you are going to like it!" Makoto growled as she easily overcame all of Ami's escape attempts. Minako made quick work of Ami's face. Ami should have known that there was no overcoming Minako and Makoto's combined power. A knock on the door was Ami's saving grace. Minako and Makoto had been discussing some other things they could try, but now there was no time for it. Instead, both girls dragged Ami to the door and opened it to see Gohan standing there in a nice shirt and slacks. His eyes bulged when he saw her condition.
"Uh," he muttered. "Are you sure you want to be that dressed up. This place is pretty casual." Ami glared angrily at the other two girls, but instead of burning holes in their skulls like she wanted, she only caused large drops of sweat to drip down the sides of their faces.
Ami was much more comfortable now that that ridiculous dress Makoto and Minako had expected her to wear was gone. Now she was only in a nice shirt and skirt, which complemented Gohan's semi-casual attire nicely. It also fit in with the restaurant around them, a grill type place where friends, families, and casual daters came.
"So about why I asked you to come here," Gohan said with an embarrassed laugh. "You see, while you're a really nice girl and all I-"
"Mother?" Ami asked abruptly.
"Yeah," Gohan admitted. Ami laughed, then remembered what Rei had told her before leaving in disgust at Minako and Makoto's actions.
Try to find stuff out. Remember, we're fairly certain but not sure that Gohan is the Saiyaman.
"So, my friend Rei mentioned something about you having an ex-girlfriend in Kyoto," Ami said casually. Gohan's expression looked pained for a brief moment. Oh dear, Ami thought, I've hit a sensitive spot.
"Yes," Gohan replied. "She was very kind and beautiful but... we were too different. She was a well regarded member of the city's high life, and I was, as one of my dad's friends liked to refer to my dad, 'a country bumpkin.'" This also elicited a laugh from Ami. Somehow, describing Son Gohan as a "country bumpkin" didn't sound right.
"I don't think it applies to you though," Ami said. "You're very refined."
"That's my mom's doing," Gohan replied with a laugh. "If Dad had raised me himself, I really would be a country bumpkin!" This also caused Ami to laugh.
"By the way," Ami said once she had enough breath to do so, "who decided to call your dad a 'country bumpkin'?" Again, Gohan's smile disappeared briefly.
"You know the little violet haired kid, Trunks? The one that your friend Usagi's little sister is always following?" Ami nodded. "That was his mom, she's one of Dad's oldest friends."
"And that's how you guys know each other?" Ami guessed. Gohan nodded. Ami once again had to remind herself of what she had to do. "Did you hear that the Saiyaman apparently now has a sidekick?" Gohan nodded again.
"Yep," he said in a disinterested fashion.
"You're not interested in this at all?" Ami asked. "He's a hero, he seems to be all that stands between us and those Androids." Gohan simply grunted.
"I'm just not into 'idol talk' is all," he replied.
"Oh," Ami said, a blush forming on her face.
"Seriously," Gohan said, "it's like you and your friends think I'm the Saiyaman with how much you bug me about him!" Ami's blush deepened.
"I'm sorry," she apologized softly. Gohan looked at her.
"If you want to ask me a question, ask it straight," he told her. Ami straightened up.
"Well then, I want to know what that energy that everyone feels around you is," she said boldly. Gohan cursed inwardly.
"I haven't been very good about hiding it have I?" he sighed. "Fine, I'll tell you. It's my Ki." Ami looked befuddled.
"Your… Ki?" she asked.
"My life force," he answered. "Everyone in my family has a very high Ki."
"But what does that mean?" Ami asked, still confused. "Having a lot of life energy? Does it mean you'll live longer than other people?" Gohan laughed.
"No, it's to do with our martial arts," he answered. "At our level of martial arts, we learn how to manipulate our Ki and turn it into energy which we use to fight." Gohan hesitated before adding: "It's the technique that the Saiyaman uses to fight the Androids." Ami nodded in understanding.
"Could you teach it to me?" she asked. Gohan looked at her.
"Somehow, I think you already know how," he replied with a smile. Ami's blush returned.
Does he suspect that I'm a Sailor Scout? she thought in terror.
Gohan seemed to be ignoring this new mental terror of hers as he consulted with their waiter over the bill, all the while not noticing the shadow that was watching. It slunk forward through the shadows of the restaurant until it was right behind their waiter.
"Yes sir, that will be about-" the waiter's next sounds were not words, but gurgles of pain followed by some strange pumping noise. Gohan sensed immediately that something was draining his Ki.
"No!" Gohan cried and grabbed the man. He reached behind the waiter's back and found some strange tube which was being used to attack him and pulled it out. The waiter slumped forward onto the table. Ami screamed in horror at what she saw had been behind the man. A tall, humanoid figure; black, beetle like wings; a head adorned with two crowning peaks; and green armored skin. She had never seen anything like it before, but Gohan seemed to have. "Ami, get out of here!" he demanded. She was about to follow his order when the thing grabbed her by the throat. It lifted her into the air and stared at her with glowing red eyes. Then it laughed at her with the robotic mockery of someone's deep, rich voice.
"What luck! My first catch and it's exactly what I was looking for!" the thing laughed. Ami looked around desperately for help, her eyes finally alighting upon Gohan who seemed to be seething with rage. He kept saying something in some low growl of a voice, which then became louder until it was clearly audible to them
"CELL!" Gohan roared, every memory of the creature before him returning to him: Cell bloated and ready to explode, his father's sacrifice to save the world, the revelation of his father's sacrifice as useless. All the lives this creature took: Future Trunks, Android 16, his father, all those nameless people… "I'LL NEVER FORGIVE YOU CELL!" Gohan's roaring returned. His hair had started to sway despite the lack of wind. The creature, Cell, smiled.
"Gohan, you really think that I'm the true Cell?" it asked him mockingly. It leered. "I am a mockery of Cell, my name is Mecha Cell!" It made a Ki ball in its hand which lighted up the body of the creature. Indeed, it did seem to be made of metal. This seemed to enrage Gohan even more.
"G-Gohan?" Ami choked as she tried to loosen Mecha Cell's fingers from around her neck. Gohan's hair was starting to jerk violently, and Ami could swear that it had turned gold for some brief moments. She was aware of the screams of people as they left the restaurant, her brain seemed to be fogging up, she didn't think she would stay conscious for long.
As Ami slowly lost consciousness, Gohan's rage increased dramatically. His hair was now an almost endless flicker between black and gold, his eyes switching violently from black to green. The rate of change increased until it was almost disorienting to watch him. Electricity sparked around him, and what little light there was in the restaurant blew out. One final roar exited Gohan's mouth as light engulfed the entire building and blew Cell back. Ami dropped and almost made it to the floor until she was saved from falling by Gohan's quick actions. Half conscious, she was unsure whether she was truly seeing correctly. She could have sworn Gohan had gold hair and green eyes, but she knew he had black hair and eyes. Her eyes finally shut as she finally fell unconscious.
Cell stared in horror at what he had just created. Gohan's rage had finally overcome his pure heart; he was a Super Saiyan. Gohan's eyes refocused upon Cell, and a snarl appeared on his lips. All of the furniture in the place had been blown to the side by the massive burst of energy Gohan let out when he transformed, leaving him a clear path as he walked slowly towards Cell.
"Stay back!" the mechanical mockery flustered as he backed away hastily. Realizing that it was having no effect upon the enraged Super Saiyan, Cell then clasped his hands at his side. "Kamehameha!" Cell roared in fright as he let the energy wave go. He succeeded in blowing up about half of the restaurant, but Gohan was completely unharmed. Indeed, it seemed that Gohan was only growing angrier. This time, Cell began running in earnest. He may be modeled after one of the most powerful creatures in the universe, but his power was far short of the horror he was experiencing now. Suddenly, Gohan appeared before him with his hands clasped at his side, his eyes filled with seething hatred.
"You see that?" Gohan snarled. "That was a technique my father used to prevent your original from destroying the world. He died using that technique, and from that moment on I never forgot what Cell took from me. Now, I'm going to destroy you." Gohan flexed the hands at his hip and began to collect energy. "Ka... Me... Ha... Me..." Cell dashed away as a purple comet, going at such high speeds that he was almost outside of the city before Gohan suddenly appeared before him once more. "HA!" A wave of blue energy engulfed the clone and sent it flying across the city. As Gohan finally cut off the stream of energy, Mecha Cell's remains fell into an abandoned alleyway and simply lay there in a pathetic heap.
"How..." the head, which was almost all that remained intact of the robotic copy, moaned. Its answer came in the form of a cold laugh, one strangely like its own.
"Poor pathetic copy," the voice laughed as a distinctly familiar form walked into the alleyway. "Don't worry, your mission will not be in vain. You will aid in Gohan's destruction... by becoming a part of my perfection." A long tail slowly crept out from behind the creature and swallowed up the head. The one true Perfect Cell groaned in satisfaction as he felt the new metal components being added to his physique. Once the transformation was complete, Cell flexed and laughed. "Soon, I shall be once again ready to face you Gohan. And when I am, you will rue the day you ever came to fight Perfect Cell!"
