AN: This is what I have been doing while I should be studying for finals. Hooray for procrastination!

So there's kind of a constant theme in my Dr. Horrible fanfiction of Penny knowing a little more than Billy realizes. And it pops up in varying degrees depending on the story. There may be hints of it here. Anyways, enjoy, and please let me know what you think!

Disclaimer: Joss owns it.

There's blood. The whole point of the death ray was to avoid blood because, despite being a doctor, the sight of it usually makes him a little lightheaded. But it's everywhere. All over her, staining her pretty new dress which, she had informed him the other day, she had purchased just for the occasion.

It should be such a good night. They should all be happy right now. All enjoying themselves. Because he shouldn't be here. He should be far away, letting her have one perfect moment. Better yet, he should be there in the front row, wearing jeans and a tee-shirt like anybody's fool, and smiling in spite of the fact that she's dating Captain Hammer. Because he loves her enough to let her go.

Instead he's wearing a lab coat and he doesn't think he'll ever smile again. He's crouched protectively over her, unwilling to leave her even though he's not doing anyone any favors. Because although his words say otherwise, deep down he knows it's over.

And in the midst of the blood she's so beautiful. Every inch of her is gentle and sweet and kind and beautiful, the heroine of a perfect story.

And as he watches the light leave her eyes, he feels like a failure. Because no matter how much he wants to, he can't save her.

There's blood. It doesn't bother her as much as it should, given that it's her own. But blood has never really phased her. Even-especially her own blood. But it's everywhere. All over her, staining her pretty new dress which, she had informed Billy the other day, shehad purchased just for the occasion.

It should be such a good night. They should all be happy right now. All enjoying themselves. Because Doctor Horrible shouldn't be there. Instead, Billy should be sitting in the front row, making this moment perfect. Better yet, they should be together onstage, holding hands like childish fools and smiling in spite Captain Hammer. Because they love each other enough to make it through tonight.

Instead they're huddled together in the back of the room and she doesn't think either of them will ever smile again. He's crouched protectively over her, and she's unwilling to let him leave even though he's not doing anyone any favors. Because although her words say otherwise, deep down she knows that it's over.

And in the midst of the pain he's so beautiful. Every inch of him is sad and scared and hurt and beautiful, the hero of an imperfect story.

And as her breath stops in her throat she feels like a failure. Because no matter how much she wants to, she can't save him.
