Quinn had no idea where to even begin looking for the brunette, the only place that came to mind was the bathroom. That is where they had ended up after the fight on prom night when she had slapped Rachel across the face, only to apologize seconds later. Just the thought made her feel sick to her stomach and remember how mean she had just been to the diva in the choir room, she was always saying the most hateful things to her. 'It's just a pathetic defense mechanism… god I hate seeing her hurting…'
As she rounded the corner she could hear loud sobbing coming from inside of the bathroom, she knew immediately who the cries belonged too and she felt a heavy weight on her chest as her heart nearly broke in two.
Gently the cheerleader pushed open the door, not wanting to frighten the other girl who was obviously drowning in her emotions at the moment. Honestly, she had no idea why she had even ran after Rachel at this point. What was she supposed to say to cheer up the girl? What do you say to someone whom which you hurt every day of high school to bring a smile to their face? She had no idea, all she knew was that the singer had no one else and she needed someone.
"Rach." She called out softly in hopes not to startle the other girl.
The softness of her voice did not appear to have the desired effect as the diva jumped, letting out a squeak of surprise as her head snapped in her direction nearly giving her whiplash. For a moment the two girls simply stared at each other, large brown tear-filled catching soft hazel as they felt the awkwardness of the situation weighing on them. Quickly though Rachel seemed to regain her composure and she wiped the tears from her cheeks feigning a confident demeanor as she jut out her chin and pressed her full lips together.
"Quinn, if you came here simply to humiliate me further I would appreciate it if you would leave because I have been thoroughly embarrassed by your harsh words already today and am uncertain I can take it." She stated without a stutter as she watched hazel eyes fill with even more sorrow and something else. 'Is that guilt…? Compassion perhaps…?' As much as she doubted this it did appear accurate.
Moving closer to her Quinn internally cringed as she watched the brunette back away defensively; no one should ever be so terrified of one person. Especially not someone who you love. "I did not come here to humiliate you Rachel." She whispered softly.
Rachel did notice that it was the second time that the blonde had used her actual name and it caused her heart to speed up a little as her mind raced to find some sort of reasoning. Though, it appeared that there was none. No reason that the taller girl should be here other than to humiliate her and no reason whatsoever for her to be using her real name. "Then I must question your reasoning behind said actions because I see no obvious explanation."
"Why do you make it so difficult to talk to you?" The blonde growled out turning so that she was no longer looking at the other girl.
"I am sorry." She muttered glancing away as well.
Suddenly Quinn's head snapped back and she quickly moved toward Rachel who once again backed away, looking up into hazel eyes with frightened browns. She was once again terrified, not knowing if she should expect a slap to the face or a hug at this point. The blonde was always so confusing with her feelings, at one moment she hated her, then the next she wanted to be friends. "Do not apologize. You have nothing to be sorry for Rachel, not now not ever. I am the one who has tormented you since the day we met, I am the one who is about to marry the man that you love. I am the one who should be sorry." She started crying now, tears rolling freely down pale cheeks.
Rendered speechless for a moment all she could do is stare into those beautiful eyes and get lost for a moment in them, searching them to see the truth behind the words. Surprisingly she found honestly in them and she knew that the taller girl meant her words. Letting them sink in further the ends of her lips quirked up almost into a smile as she licked over her lips before speaking softly. The last thing that she wanted was to frighten the cheerleader away now that they were making progress. "Is that why you came in here after me Quinn? To apologize?"
When Quinn said nothing and merely chewed on her pink bottom lip as she stared into Rachel's eyes, the diva knew that this was the reasoning. She just was not prepared to admit it. Before she could push her away again Rachel moved closer smiling brightly. "Apology accepted."
Now confusion filled hazel eyes. "Wait what?"
"Quinn I am fully aware that you followed me in here in order to apologize for your behavior, I am also aware that you were momentarily thinking up something rather rude and insulting to say in an attempt to push me away and hurt me so that you would not be forced to feel vulnerable. So, now none of that is necessary because I accept your apology and I wish to move on from this mishap."
"So what? Now you just accept my apology and we can be friends?" Quinn practically screamed, her raspy voice cracking as she did so, turning to slam her hands onto the sink in the bathroom. Staring into her own reflection, realizing that she was shaking and angry. 'How can she just forgive me after everything that I put her through! How can she be such a perfect person! I hate her… no… I hate that I love her! God damn it!'
"Well, friends may be a bit farfetched considering our history, but I would not mind being your friend Quinn." She mumbled, the smile now completely cleansed from her features as she reached out to place a soothing hand on the blondes shaking arm in hopes to help her calm down. It only seemed to intensify the shaking though.
Shaking her head she found herself laughing at the ridiculousness of the situation. "I can't be your friend! How can I be your friend—no! How can you be my friend after everything that I have done to intentionally hurt you! How can you be my friend!" Her body was now shaking even more so as tears started to fall fasted down her cheeks, she could taste the saltiness from them on her tongue as she internally prayed that her legs would not give out beneath her.
"Because Quinn, I believe in giving second chances. You deserve the chance to repent for past mistakes." She now had both hands on the blondes arms and was running her fingers gently over the heated skin.
"Second chances." She laughed some more, but Rachel could tell that this was not a happy laugh. It was on the verge of demented. "You have given me so many second chances it is becoming ridiculous to call them that!" 'God why does she have to be touching me right now? Her fingers are so soft and comforting… she is perfect and I hate it how much I am enjoying this…'
Chewing on her full bottom lip she continued to run her hands over Quinn's arms. "Well, this is true so I propose that we forget all of the past. This shall not be a quote unquote second chance, but instead this shall be a new beginning of sorts. As if nothing terrible ever happened." She smiled brightly at her revelation and the fact that the blonde appeared to be shaking a little less than before, secretly she hoped that she were a part of the reasoning behind this.
"A new beginning?" The cheerleader questioned in a raspy whisper, tears still falling as she felt her body giving up due to exhaustion. All she wanted to do was to say yes, to be Rachel's friend, but she knew it would not be that easy with the feelings that she harbored.
"We could be friends."
"Rach." She whispered.
"Oh, do not worry I would not try and steal Finn away from you. That is all in the past, as much as I love him, which I do, I would respect the fact that you are in a relationship with him." Rachel's smile faltered only a little. Truthfully for as long as she could remember she had wanted to be Quinn's friend so this was not such a bad deal.
"It isn't Finn that I'm worried about, it's me Rachel. I don't want to hurt you anymore." She mumbled before turning now in order to face the beautiful brunette, looking down into her confused brown eyes.
"Then be my friend Quinn." A pout formed on her lips that nearly broke the taller woman's heart. Reaching up Quinn ran her fingers gently along the other girl's face smiling softly as she pushed a strand of dark hair behind her ear. Seeing the pout form into a large smile at such a simple gesture only proved to hurt her all the more. She knew that she could not give Rachel what she needed. She could not be her friend.
"I can't Rachel. I can't be your friend as long as I feel this way. I will only hurt you again." With that she dropped her hand and moved passed her and out the bathroom door.
"Feel what way?" Rachel questioned more so to herself than the other girl as her eyebrows knit together in confusion. "What could she possibly mean by that?"
