Disclaimer- I don't own Black Jack, Tezuka Productions does.

Hi. I'm a big Black Jack fan (as of two weeks ago) *cough*brony*cough* and I thought I'd write a fanfiction.

The title is awful and corny, but it's supposed to be that way. Sorry.

All the characters are from the manga. Mr. Shima was his schoolteacher, and Takashi was the friend who gave him the skin graft. I used the offical Vertical spelling of the names for the characters, so Black jack's real name is spelled Kuro'o. Enjoy!

The excited shrieks of several children hit his ears, and he turned his head away from the noise. It wasn't that he didn't want to join them- it was that he couldn't.

He was a litle ways away from the others, sitting with his legs in a cast on his wheelchair. His two-toned hair and sad eyes pushed other kids away, and he didn't make any effort to change thier minds. He knew they didn't want a cripple for a friend.

"Kuro'o..."

Hearing his name, he turned his head in the direction of the voice.

"Hello, Mr. Shima."

"Are you all right? Do you want us to do an activity that we can all do?" asked the teacher kindly, slightly adjusting his paisley suit.

"No...it's better this way. It would just be embarrassing. Besides, everyone's been looking forward to Sports' Day." Kuro'o hated the idea of drawing attention to himself like that.

"Mr. Shima, could I keep him company?" Kuro'o looked up to see Takashi, the half-african, half-asian boy standing next to his wheelchair.

"Takashi, are you sure?" asked Mr. Shima doubtfully.

"I don't like sports." replied Takashi.

Mr. Shima nodded, grateful that there was someone to be with Kuro'o so he could watch the other students.

"Don't feel sorry for me." muttered Kuro'o. He wasn't ungrateful or anything, he just didn't want to be pitied.

Takashi shrugged, sitting next to Kuro'o's wheelchair. When he saw that Kuro'o had difficulty seeing him from that angle he scooted so he was in front of him.

"I really don't like sports. I'd rather be outisde, climbing a mountain or something. Something where you can look at nature."

"Nature?"

"Yeah. I go hiking on this one trail all the time. It's got all these really big trees and plants and stuff. And when you get to the end there's this big clearing with really soft grass. I think it's really cool. There's nothing i like more than laying out in the sun there."

Kuro'o nodded, wishing he could go there himself. Takashi caught his forlorn look and continued talking.

"You could come if you wanted. No one else knows about it, and I think you'd like it."

"What about my wheelchair?"

"It's not a hard path. If you get tired I can help you. It's no big deal."

"Really?"

"Yeah. Do you wanna go?"

"...Yeah." admitted Kuro'o.

"Hey, do you get the homework we got last night? I don't. Could you help me?" asked Takashi.

Kuro'o smiled. "It's really easy once you know how to do it. My homework's just inside the school, in my bag. I can go get it right now."

"I'll come with you."

They chatted as they went inside the school, Kuro'o's face more brightly lit than it had been in a long time. He had a friend.
