He's not invisible anymore
With his Father's nine and a broken fuse
Since he walked through that classroom door
He's all over primetime news
Stole by Kelly Rowland
Edward Cullen was a quiet, clever boy and he was unequivocally in love with Bella Swan. The son of two of Forks resident doctors, Esme and Carlisle Cullen, he was set for Harvard to study Medicine. He'd had his place confirmed just two months previous and was Forks prodigy; everyone knew where he was headed and was a hundred percent behind him, everyone except Jacob Black and his group, even Bella didn't seem to care. He'd been born and raised in Forks, Washington State in a large house on the outskirts of town; he was an only child as his mother had had complications during his birth that resulted in her being unable to have another child. She'd wanted to adopt but with the hours she worked she knew that the likelihood of adoption was slim so instead she threw her all into raising Edward, she'd cut her hours at work and spent as much time with him as she could.
Edward watched as Jacob Black, his arch nemesis and the boy who had captured the heart of the girl he'd loved since Fourth Grade, walked toward him and shoved his head in his locker. Jacob's gang burst into laughter and a rage akin to none Edward had every felt filled him making him see red. Bella Swan kissed Jacob Black's bicep as he returned to her. Jacob tightened his arm around her causing Edward to see more red but what Edward didn't notice was Bella's kiss was a cover. A cover to check he was okay. Bella had always watched out for Edward from afar. At her first day at Forks Elementary, she had wanted to go and talk to Edward but Jacob latched onto her and she hadn't been able to escape him so instead, for the last eight years, she'd watched and protected Edward from Jacob's true nature from afar.
Bella Swan had arrived in Forks from Phoenix, Arizona; her mother had remarried a baseball player set for the big league. Bella's mother had said she could stay and travel around but Bella would miss her acting and dancing so decided to move in with her father. Forks had been a large adjustment for Bella. She'd gone from living in a large, sunny city to being in a small, rainy, too green town but Bella got through it with her arts; she threw herself into her dance and acting. Forks didn't hold much in the way of classes but Mrs Cope, Bella's next door neighbour saw her promise and took her to lessons in Port Angeles. Monday's, Wednesday's and Saturday for six years until Bella got her driving license, Mrs. Cope took Bella to dance and acting lessons; she sat there watching Bella's talent grow. Not only was Bella smart and talented but she was the most popular girl in school and head cheerleader. She had been in the cool group from day one. Part of the exclusive group that contained Jacob Black, Mike Newton, Jessica Stanley, Rosalie King, Emmett McCarty, Alice Cullen, Jasper Whitlock and Bella. The girls were all members of the cheerleading squad and the boys Spartans. Jasper and Mike ran track while Emmett and Jacob played on the basketball team. Jacob showed the most promise, he had a trail with the Sixers in two months and on that same day Bella had auditions for TV shows and movies in Los Angeles.
"Hey Nerdward, who you stalking today?"
Emmett McCarty whacked Edward over the head as he walked toward Jacob.
"Better not be my Bella, Cullen or you're dead. So dead."
Edward said nothing and instead turned away from Jacob and his gang, burying his head in his locker as he packed his bag. As he pushed his Calculus book into his bag, his eyes landed on the picture and ring he kept in his locker. He'd taken the picture of Bella last summer the day before they started senior year. He'd gone hiking in the forest surrounding his house to go to his place. It was a meadow that he'd found nestled off a track when he was just eleven and he'd claimed it as his own. In the trunk of a tree, he'd engraved a large E in his cursive writing. When he walked through the opening, he froze. Leaning back on her arms, her eyes closed, lips slightly part with her face facing the sun was Bella Swan. Bella Swan was there, in the meadow. His meadow. Edward had wanted to go speak to her but he couldn't build up the courage so instead he took this photo with the camera he took everywhere. He'd printed it out and kept it in his locker ever since. The ring was Bella's. One evening, her house stood empty and her bedroom window open. He'd climbed in and taken the simple gold ring that he knew she always wore. He'd placed it in a see through pouch and put it over the top of the photo. No one knew the photo and ring were there just as no one knew just how deep Edward's love for Bella was. Not even his mother who Edward told everything.
Later that day Edward sat alone in Biology, like normal but as he looked up, Bella Swan was walking toward him. "Alice has bailed. Can I work with you? Apparently we have to have a partner for today."
Edward nodded, unable to do anything else and as Bella sat down next to him; her scent intoxicated him. She smelt of strawberries and as Bella's hand touched his as she slid her hand forward to pick up a slide, he felt a jolt through him. He heard Bella gasp and they looked at each other. Bella shook her head and placed the slide on the microscope. As she leant her eye on the eye piece she spoke. "I'm sorry about what Emmett and Jacob did to you this morning."
Edward thought he'd better talk before Bella thought he was even more of a weirdo. "It's okay; I'm used to it after fourteen years. I've learnt to just be invisible."
"You shouldn't have to be invisible Edward."
"I like it. Being invisible means I get to watch and see things other people are blind to. I know so much about some people it's unreal."
Bella couldn't help the smile that spread across her lips. She liked Edward and wanted to get to know him more. Bella started to talk to Edward and he to her. They laughed and smiled while they worked on their mitosis stages. Sitting there with Bella, Edward began to think that maybe, just maybe he and Bella could be together. As soon as Bella was out the door, Jacob grabbed her and dragged her to a nearby locker. Edward disappeared into a corner where he could hear them.
"What the fuck do you think you're doing with that dweeb?"
"Alice bailed, I needed a partner and he was the only person without one."
"Fine but talking to him and laughing. Bella, you're the most popular girl in this school. You can't be seen with him or even talking to him. It's social suicide."
Bella tore her arm from Jacob's grip. "Fine, I won't talk to him again. I won't even look at him if it'll make you happy."
"You better not Bella."
As Jacob and Bella walked away together, Bella looked back. She was sure someone had been watching them and knew she needed to get away from Jacob. She needed to be free. As soon as Bella looked forward, Edward came out from his hiding place and punched a nearby locker.
The rest of the day Edward had managed to avoid Bella, Jacob and their friends. He was driving home in his Volvo and knew that the next day at school he'd be treated like a leper by Jacob and his gang even more than normal. He sighed as he grabbed his bag and walked into the glass fronted house that he and his parents lived in. He called out and knew he was home alone; both his parents would be at work at Forks General.
Edward walked toward the piano on the raised ledge and played the latest melody he'd composed. It was for her. For Bella, even if she would never hear it, he knew it was hers. After completing the melody, Edward walked upstairs to work on his homework.
Edward's suspicions of being treated even more harshly by the popular gang rang were true. The moment he stepped on the school grounds he was hounded by them all. Emmett, Jasper, Jacob and Mike cornered him in a deserted hall during the first break. Everyone was outside enjoying a rare sunny Forks day but Edward chose to stay inside and study.
Jacob pinned him to the wall by his neck. "You will never ever talk or look at Bella again. You understand?"
Edward nodded as best he could under Jacob's weight. Emmett, Jasper and Mike punched him in quick succession; Jacob punched him five times in the gut before leaving him to fall to the floor. Edward was winded and unable to move but he could still hear. He heard her voice. "There you guys are, Rose wants to play a game of basketball. Where have you been?"
Edward shuddered as he heard Jacob's voice. The pain seared through Edward and a loud grunt escaped him lips. "What was that?"
"Nothing Bells, let it go."
Jacob gripped onto Bella's arm trying to steer her away but she broke free and ran the way the boys had come. Edward's eyes were gripped shut through the pain and Bella gasped as she saw him. She knelt down beside him and pushed his hair out his face before turning to look up at Jacob. "Did you do this?"
"No, everyone hates that dweeb. Someone else did."
Jacob's hand came down on Bella's shoulder. "Don't touch me Jacob. Don't you dare touch me."
Edward opened his eyes a fraction and saw the concern filled face of Bella Swan looking down at him and the vicious face of Jacob looking at her. "Suit yourself but you'll come crawling back. You always do."
Jacob and the others walked away leaving Edward alone with Bella for the first time. Bella carefully sat him up and examined him. "Did they do this to you?"
For some reason Edward couldn't tell her the truth so he lied. "No, I don't know who it was."
Bella didn't seem convinced but let it slide. She lifted Edward up and helped him to walk to the nurse's office. Once he was there, Bella left him to seek out Jacob while Nurse Jackson cleaned his wounds and rang his mother to come collect him.
Bella left the nurses office totally unconvinced that it wasn't Jacob and the guys who'd attacked Edward. Bella decided that she'd visit Edward tonight to see how he was. Everyone knew roughly where he lived so she shouldn't have any trouble finding him and if she did she'd just call her dad, he was Police Chief of Forks and knew the place like the back of his hand.
"Edward, there's someone here for you."
Edward stood from his chair in the reading room and began walking down stairs. Once he reached the foyer he found his mom stood by the door with what appeared to be Bella Swan. He rubbed his eyes. It couldn't be. Could it?
He opened his eyes and sure enough she was still there. "Bella."
His mother smiled. "I'll leave you two to it. Bella, you're more than welcome to stay for something to eat."
"Thank you Dr. Cullen."
"Call me Esme, please."
Edward's mother walked away but not without looking back at her son and his visitor. Edward had been born and raised in this town and not once had anyone knocked on their door to visit. She smiled as she stepped into the kitchen. Maybe things were looking up.
Edward was stood rooted to the spot. "Edward, are you okay?"
He nodded and Bella smiled. "I came to see how you were. You were hurt pretty bad."
As she spoke Bella surveyed Edward. He had a black eye, marks around his neck where he seemed to have been pinned and his bottom lip had split open and was swollen. Bella shuddered as she wondered what his body must look like. "I'm okay, the perks of having parent's who are doctors."
Bella laughed. "I bet. Do you have somewhere we can sit?"
Edward nodded and walked Bella to the reading room. Bella gasped as they entered the reading room was large, akin to a floor of a library you'd find in a small town. The shelves lined the room, floor to ceiling; the glass backing out to the garden was free of shelves though. "Wow, how many?"
"Around six thousand. We have everything in here; it's the place I come to escape."
"I bet. God, I wish we had this many books. I love reading."
Edward was shocked, in the eight years since Bella had moved to Forks he'd never seen her with a book. "Jacob thinks it's nerdy so I only read at home but I love it."
Once again Edward saw red and felt deep seated hatred for Jacob. Bella sat in one of the wing back chairs and beckoned for Edward to sit in the one opposite. "I came to apologise. Again. It feels like I'm always apologising for them."
Edward decided to play dumb. "Who?"
"Jacob and the guys, of course. Even Rose, Jessica and Alice. They're just so mean to you and after what happened today I'm not going to let them hurt you again. I promise Edward."
"It wasn't them."
"Edward, I may be popular and a cheerleader but I'm not dumb. I know it was them."
Edward burst into tears. "I've never done anything to them."
Bella sighed and placed her hand over Edward's and that jolt passed through them again. "I know and I'm not putting up with it anymore. I want to be friends with you Edward. Would you like that?"
Edward smiled and nodded. "Yes."
Bella smiled. "I'm free Friday's. Every Friday I'll come see you and we'll spend some time together and at school I'll make sure they leave you alone Edward."
"Why now Bella? Why not all those years ago?"
"Because it never used to be this bad. It's got worse since we started senior year but I've always watched out for you Edward. You may think you're invisible but I can see you. I always see you."
Edward couldn't help the smile that spread across his face. Just then, Esme walked in the room. "Bella, are you staying for dinner?"
Bella smiled and squeezed Edward's hand before turning to Esme. "I will."
Bella stood to help and Edward followed. Her hand never left his, maybe things were about to change.
True to her word, Bella came by every Friday. She'd been visiting for almost two months and Edward had come to cherish their Friday nights together. They laughed, joked around and he shared his deepest, darkest fears with her. After dinner on their first night together Edward had sworn not to tell anyone about their meetings, Bella wanted the one to tell everyone when the time was right.
Just as Jacob had suspected Bella did reunite with him and Edward tried to hide just how much that hurt him. He had been hoping these visits would be the start of a relationship with Bella but his hope was shot down just two weeks after they started. Bella had taken Jacob back but she promised Edward her visits would never stop. They were now friends she had said and would be forever. Those words served as little comfort to Edward. As the weeks went on Edward helped Bella learn her lines for her big time auditions. The previous weekend she'd headed to California to scout roles before her big auditions and couldn't wait to tell Edward what she'd discovered.
"I have the exact size handprints as Marilyn Monroe."
Edward smiled and hugged Bella. He'd missed the previous week's meeting and had something he needed to tell Bella that night. "It's a sign Bella. You're going to be a huge star. Just wait."
"I hope so."
Edward led Bella to their spot in his house. They were home alone tonight as his mom was working a cover shift at the hospital as was his dad. "Bella, I wanted to talk to you."
Bella smiled. "Go ahead, you can tell me anything."
Edward took a deep breath. "Bella, I love you. I've loved you since the day you moved here."
Bella blinked once and just stared at Edward. "What?"
"I love you Bella and these nights we spend together have made me realise we're made for each other."
"Edward, I... I... you can't... we can't."
"But Bella, I love you."
"I... Edward I have to go."
Without another word or look back at Edward, Bella left. As she did so Edward started seeing red. He thought she'd stay. He thought she'd say it back. He sat there as if made from stone. He had to fix it. He had to.
On Monday at school, Bella avoided Edward and ceased to protect him. The jibes and jabs started up and Bella stood at the sidelines. She wanted to help Edward but she couldn't make herself move or do much else but think about what he'd admitted to her Friday evening. He loved her and she was sure she loved him but she saw no way that they could have each other. They were polar opposites; she could never get away as much as she wanted to.
Edward hated that Bella was doing this to him and he knew she loved him, he knew she wanted him but couldn't see a way out so Edward would need to find a way. A way to save her from him and deliver her into his arms. He could do it. He would do it.
That evening Edward waited until it was dark and most would be in bed. He slowly drove through the deserted streets of Forks, Washington to Bella's home. All the lights were out and he climbed that tree. The same tree he had climbed each and every time. He quietly lowered himself into her room and sat in the aged rocking chair opposite her bed and watched her. He sat for hours and around dusk he rose, stroked her hair away from her face and gently pressed his lips to her cheek. "Today I'll free you. We'll be together forever."
That morning, Edward made sure he had what he needed. He kissed his mother and father goodbye and climbed into his Volvo. Jacob and Bella had homeroom in the room opposite his. They all had homeroom together so instead of heading to his homeroom, he waited in his car until the school was empty. When everyone was in their classes, he walked toward the school, his weapons in his hand.
He calmly opened their homeroom door with the guns resting at his side before locking it. They were all sat facing something, their teacher wasn't there. Bella and Jacob were in the corner talking, his body covering hers. Everyone else sat paying no attention. Invisible as normal.
Edward cocked the gun and in an instant, everything changed.
Chief Charlie Swan arrived at the school within ten minutes. He'd been told to expect Bella as one of the dead but he wouldn't believe it not until he saw it with his own eyes. Charlie walked in the now empty homeroom, save for forensics and his police department and when he saw her, he ran forward and cradled her in his arms. His baby girl, his talented baby girl taken too soon.
All day those who had been in that room were interviewed gently. A picture of what had happened emerged. Edward had entered and shot Jacob, Emmett who had tried to save Bella but Edward stopped him. Edward's final words had been "We belong together. Forever." Then two shots rang out in succession leaving Bella dead at Edward's hand and Edward dead at his own.
The school never really recovered, all of the gang were haunted by what they'd seen. Emmett's shot hadn't been fatal but he'd been injured and would never play basketball again. The girl's had nightmares and the guys missed their leader and best friend. Long after their funerals and the opening of the Forks High School Memorial to them, the people who had been in that homeroom never felt the same again. They all knew that their wounds would never really heal and it was only with the support of one another that they'd got through the hell of the shooting and its aftermath. When they contemplated trying to numb the pain in the only way they knew would work for sure, drink and drugs, they supported one another through before they took that step. They wanted to stand in solidarity and not give Edward Cullen the satisfaction of ruining their lives too.
The depth of Edward's obsessive love was discovered when his locker and room were searched. Police found the ring, the ring that had belonged to her grandmother as well as many hundreds of photos of her, awake and asleep.
Shortly after the shootings, Esme and Carlisle moved to the other side of the country. They were never forgiven for what their son had done to two of the town's most talented teens. No one even knew they had had a son in their new town.
