The digital alarm clock beeped and welcomed midnight with four big 0's that blinked three times in the half darkness of Richard's room. Though he was exhausted, Milo remembered something irrelevant that made him sigh, "Look at that."
Rick looked up from his pillow, groggy, but happy. "What?"
"Today the 13th?"
Rick smiled, "I think you made me lose track of time, better get a calendar."
He stretched, rubbed his eyes and leaned over Milo, reaching for the alarm clock, "Here." Rick fumbled for the right button and Milo placed a hand on the small of his back, just to feel the skin. Rick didn't bother to move away.
The four digits on the alarm clock we replaced by a date, and Rick nodded, "Yup. January 13th." He looked back. "Scared of Friday 13th, tough guy?"
In a lazy motion, Rick turned, letting the touch slide to his stomach, "Then it's a special date?"
Milo dismissed the idea with a wave of his hand,"Birthday."
"Very special date," Rick said, leaning in and giving him a kiss on the cheek. "Congratulations."
"Nothing special about thirty five. And I'm not that big on birthdays, anyways."
"Even so, I wish we had cake. Oh, wait! Stay here."
He got up and rushed out of the room, not bothering to put something on.
When Rick came back, he was carrying a muffin, with a dinner candle stuck in the middle of it. He was fighting to keep it balanced on his way back to the bed and Milo had to laugh. "What's this?"
"Haaappy birthday to you. Happy birthday to yo- oh shit, the candle's out."
"Screw it. Haaaappy bithday dear Miiiiiilo. Happy birthday to yoooou!"
Milo clapped, "Beautiful rendition."
"Thank you. Now blow."
"It's already out."
"Use your imagination. And make a wish first."
"If you say so."
Milo leaned in and let out a quick blow of breath on the candle top.
Rick asked, "What did you wish for?"
Rick laughed, "At least I know what to get you."
"Don't have to get me anything."
"Of course I do!"
"You already got me cake, that's as good as it gets," and tried to reach for it, but Rick didn't let him.
"Yes, uhn, this has been sitting on my counter for about three days and I don't think it's worth the risk. It was a more of an illustration."
"Right you are."
"Sorry, best I could on such short notice."
Milo smiled, "Best birthday ever. Trust me. There is something missing, though."
"Other than presents, cake and balloons?"
"Oh, well, that I can fix."
