I just found out that today (January 23) is National Pie Day! I couldn't let the occasion go by without commemorating it in a story—featuring, of course, Dean and pie!

PIE IN THE SKY

By: Vanessa Sgroi

Dean stood in the middle of the Pie in the Sky Bakery, his gaze locked on the display case as he stared in wonder at the glorious assortment before his eyes. His mouth was watering in anticipation.

The elderly woman behind the counter finished with another customer then turned her attention to him with a kindly smile. "May I help you?" Her blue eyes twinkled merrily.

"Yes!" Dean offered a rare smile of his own, beaming in delight. "I want some pie!"

"Well then, I reckon you've come to the right place, my dear. And on the best day of the year too!"

Dean tore his salacious gaze away from a luscious looking Lemon Meringue Pie with not a little effort. "Oh? Why is that?"

The woman pointed to a brightly colored sign over her shoulder. "Today is National Pie Day. In honor of such an auspicious occasion, all of my pies are buy one, get one free."

"Really?"

"Absolutely. Now what kind are you looking for, sweetheart?"

"That Lemon Meringue right there."

"And your second choice?"

Dean carefully studied all the selections before him. He pointed. "Blueberry."

"Excellent choices! Let me get those boxed up for you." She reached under the counter and pulled out two white boxes. Before she could get the selections boxed, Dean continued.

"I'll also take a Banana Cream and a French Silk Chocolate."

"All right."

"And maybe a Coconut Cream. And a Grape! Hmmm. Pecan. Blackberry. Oh, and I can't forget an Apple and a Cherry."

Tilda's eyebrows crawled up her forehead with each new request. When her young and overly-excited customer ran out of steam, she exclaimed, "Good Heavens, child—surely you're not going to eat all of these yourself?"

"No, no. I'll share with my brother—I think."

"I certainly hope you and your brother have enormous appetites."

"Oh, I do, I do—I mean…we do, we do."

Tilda quickly boxed the amazingly perfect pastries under Dean's eagle eye. She stacked the boxes carefully in a larger box on the counter before taking the payment being held out to her. She dropped the change into Dean's upturned palm. "Now you boys enjoy those desserts."

"Oh, we will. Trust me." Dean nodded his goodbye and exited Pie in the Sky. He whistled while making his way to the car.

As Dean approached, Sam gaped at his older brother. He rolled down the window. "What the… Dean?"

"Got us some pie, Sammy!"

"Some pie? Dude, there're like TEN pies there!"

"I know! Isn't it awesome?" Dean said as he carefully settled his yummy burden in the backseat before sliding into the driver's seat. He looked at Sam, grinning. "It's National Pie Day!"

Sam snorted in disbelief. "National Pie Day? Dude, you're kidding me!"

"Nope."

The younger Winchester grabbed his phone and tapped at the number buttons. After a few seconds, he sighed. "You're not kidding."

"Told ya."

"You do realize if you eat all that pie, you're gonna be sick as a dog."

"Nope. I've got a plan."

"Oh?"

"Yep. One—you're going to eat the pies with me…"

"But…" Sam's burgeoning protest was cut off.

"And two, the cream pies come first. Then we gradually work on all the others."

"But…"

"Nuh uh. No arguments! We can't—CANNOT—let this day go to waste, Sammy!"

Sam's gaze roamed over his elder sibling taking in the sheer joy lighting Dean's face. He pulled his lower lip between his teeth. Finally, he rolled his eyes and shrugged. "Okay, fine. So we'll both end up sick as dogs."

"That's the spirit, Sammy. That's the spirit!"
