"If what you're doing is not your passion, you have nothing to lose."
After a hassle of collecting my luggage through the millions of impatient passengers at the baggage claim, I hurry on over to the front of the airport and call out for a taxi informing the cab driver to drive all the way up to the apartment complex of 2311 N. Los Robles. I noticed that I haven't put on any make up for the day, slowly remembering the fact that I was in such a hurry this morning that I didn't want to be late for my flight nor did I wish to deal with the traffic jam later on in the morning either. Plus I was exhausted so I didn't really give a damn at the moment. I apply a decent amount of blush around the apples of my cheeks, a bit of mascara, and lastly a rosy shade of lipstick. I stare at myself for a bit through my compact mirror and decide that I look appropriate enough for the day. I'm not really a fan for make up though I would only use it for special occasions or because I really needed it. Surprisingly I never had any acne when I was young, it must've been because of my grandmother's many beauty secrets that came into good use for me as I got older. So I guess that's one thing that I've liked about myself. I never really thought of myself as a beautiful woman even though I was given the name and many people have told me so other wise. But I always believed that they just said that to be polite; and I was never conceited a girl either because I knew how much it annoyed others unlike my sister Maanika who would take over an hour just to get ready for school.
I just hoped that I look approachable enough for him today, since just the other day I spent almost sixty dollars for a new pair of clothes. I bought white jeans, a beige blouse, and brown pumps combining it all with golden bangles and a flower shaped necklace thinking that the outfit would surely have him turn his head…What? I haven't seen this man in over three years no one said it was a crime to look good in front of the person you want to impress now did they? For some odd reason I feel ashamed over the fact that I feel more excited on seeing Sheldon than I am seeing Rajesh…is that so wrong? I mean come on this obnoxious man just made fun of me for being fat when I was little! Why should I feel guilty for not being excited on seeing him again? But that doesn't mean that I'll be rude the whole time I'm there either I am a guest after all, of course sometimes I have a habit for not keeping my mouth shut while being too honest with someone. Next thing I know the taxi halts to a stop and I'm looking out the window to the apartment complex. I feel butterflies in my stomach as I thank the cab driver, pay him his tab, grab my luggage from the trunk of the car, and slowly walked to the front of the building.
While inside I notice that it was empty and the fact that the elevator was out of service, huh…I wonder why? But based on the text that Rajesh sent to me this morning I had to go up to room 4A; he said it was best to meet up with him at the his friend's apartment since he mostly hung out more at there place than he did his. I was already exhausted after climbing four flights of stairs especially since my suitcase was pretty heavy but no matter it counts as an exercise for me really. I notice the golden plate that read the apartment number and stand in front of the door. Now my hands are beginning to sweat and I feel fidgety while smoothing out my jeans and running my fingers through my jet black hair praying it looked wavy enough today. I knock five times in a row but no answer, I knock a second time and still no response, I push down the handle of my suitcase and place it against the wall as I start rubbing my temples with my two forefingers.
"They're not there if that's what you're thinking." I jumped at the voice that came from behind me and violently turned around to see who it was. I noticed a woman with golden locks of hair and piercing green eyes dressed in a yellow sweater vest and dark denim skirt that seemed to look like a uniform approach me, she looked vaguely familiar somehow.
"Whoa! Didn't mean to scare you there I was just-hey…wait a minute aren't you that girl who went out with Raj three years ago? Umm let me see you're name was La-Lina?
I realized that she was that bar tender from the restaurant that me and Rajesh went to and decided to remind her on who I was. "Lalita…Lalita Gupta it's very nice to meet you," I extend my hand out for her to shake and see the look of realization on her face as she remembers my face.
"Oh that's right! Yeah Lalita! But I remember him calling you 'Little Lalita' is that right?" she asks as she narrows her jade colored eyes at me. "Oh yes well that was a childhood nickname of mine that they used to give me when I was a child since I was the shortest one in my family but look at me now!"
I say as I move my hand up and down my body representing my height. She giggles at this and releases my hand after she shakes it "Ha! You're pretty funny Lalita, my name's Penelope Miller by the way but you can just call me Penny, sorry I never introduced myself properly the last time I saw you," she blushes.
"Oh don't worry about it, I was more frustrated in dealing with Rajesh at the moment thanks due to his servings of over a million 'grasshoppers'" I roll my eyes as I remember the date playing all over again in my mind.
"Yeah Raj can be an obnoxious bastard when he's drunk, believe me I should know," she smirks "But he's a really nice guy once you get to know him," I give her a look of surprise "Well I hope you're right Penny but I guess I'm just going to have to wait here until he arrives with his friends from where ever they are," I cross my arms and lean against the wall next to their door.
"What? No way girl if you want you can come and wait with me in my apartment for now. They're just busy buying some stuff from the comic book store that's not too far from here so they'll probably be back in no less than twenty minutes or so," she says as she pulls out the key to her apartment which thankfully was right next to theirs and holds the door for me "Oh wow thank you so much Penny!" I smile politely at her as I roll my suitcase inside.
"No problem I couldn't just leave you out there all alone that'd be rude don't you think? And I don't mean to be nosy or anything but um why exactly are you here anyways?" she closes the door after tossing her purse over to the green colored couch.
"Well one of the reasons why is because Raj's sister informed me just a couple of days ago that he wishes to express his apology towards his rude behavior by inviting me over to a ceremony over at Caltech University,"
I sit down on the right side of the couch as she brings over two cans of soda for the both of us "Really? You don't say…well at least he's willing to make it up to you right?" "Hmm I guess but then again I've only seen him that one time and ever since then I've been avoiding him so I don't really know what he's like when he's sober," I sighed.
I settle my drink down the coffee table in front of us while turning my body halfway to face her. "Oh well you should already know about him and his fear of talking to women and all so in a way you can't really blame the guy for drinking his fears away," she tells me as she sits down a seat away from me ".Actually I can, he should've done something about that a long time ago, it's been going on ever since he was a child, I mean doesn't he just get sick of it? Not being brave enough to be able to speak to at least one decent woman out there?"
She takes off her brown flats and places her feet underneath her thighs "To tell you the truth Lalita I really don't know but you should definitely talk to him about that…who knows? Maybe you can even help him grow out of it just by talking to him more often; I gave up on that a long time ago though"
I give her a small grin "You know what Penny? I should and I most definitely will! Once I go back to South Carolina, Rajesh Kootherpali will be a changed man I guarantee it!" we both laugh hysterically at this "Damn straight Lalita! You know what? I actually think it's rather sweet that he thought about inviting you over to the party don't you?" her eyebrows burrow together at the question and I actually find myself feeling grateful over the fact that he was in fact kind of enough to have me as his date to the party.
"Hmmm yes you're right it is, I'll make sure to tell him that once he comes back," "Yeah totally! So umm what's your second reason for coming over huh? I see her give me a mischievous look and immediately look away from her so I can hide the slight blush on my face "O-oh! Well see…there was someone else that I wanted to see again but I'm not so sure if he even remembers me" I see her immediately jump up from her seat and find her scooting a bit closer to me "Oh my gosh are you serious? Well come on tell me who is it? I won't say a word to the guys I swear!"
I take in a deep breath and look sheepishly at her eyes as I intertwine my fingers together while placing them on my lap "Alright…well you see he was a very sweet man and I haven't exactly had someone treat me so respectfully in such a long time so I kept on hoping to see him again one day," she seems to get more excited by the minute and I decide to just spill it "So in a way I'm here to see Sheldon Cooper as well" I finally say to her as I move my eyes to look at the opposite side of the room.
I hear a stifle of laughter and immediately turn my head around to see Penny giggling her butt off "Aahahahahaha Sheldon? You mean the man-child, who wears two layered shirts, carries hand sanitizer in his pocket, owns a schedule for everything, and has an issue with touching people…that Sheldon? Ha nice one Lalita but seriously though who's the lucky guy?"
I look at her in disbelief and feel offended over the fact that she believes that he doesn't have a chance with me "I'm being completely serious here Penny why would I even joke over something like that anyways? If you were there when I took him out for that dinner date you'd completely change your point of view towards him he was very polite and acted like a true gentleman," I tell her with a bit of attitude in my voice "Oh Lalita I-I'm so sorry I wasn't trying to be rude I just-""Didn't expect a woman like me to be interested in a man like that huh?" she looks down with embarrassment.
"Well in a way…yeah I mean don't get me wrong Sheldon is a cute guy and all but he's not exactly the type to date…or even takes interest in having a serious relationship with a woman either, but that doesn't mean you can't try right?" she gives me a crooked smile and I giggle a bit "Yes you're right about that no doubt but I attempt to at least try and convince him to go out with me once more before I go back home next week, just to see if he'll change his mind about me you know?" I lay down further into the couch.
"Oh yeah completely, I mean… if I were to have the guts to have asked him out before there'd be a 80% chance he'd say no since he finds me 'intolerable' to deal with sometimes, but he seemed to like you enough to at least go out with you right?" she asks me with a concerned look on her face.
"It's kind of funny you mentioned that since I actually asked him that one time if he'd like to see me again and he said that he already 'had a dentist' since you know I'm a dental student and all, I was both humored yet upset over the fact that he was oblivious enough to not understand that I actually wanted to see him more often but I can't exactly blame him since he must've never had a date before…makes me feel sorry for him you know?"
Penny had a sad smile on her face and shook her head "Yeah but he doesn't really mind it since physics is his life and everything plus his only major goal is to achieve the Nobel Prize," "And that's the thing Penny that's what I liked about him, just the fact that he's passionate about his work and wanting to prove to others that he is able to succeed in what he believes in, it's incredible! To me that's how all men should be like nowadays…not being-" "Obnoxious pigs who only think with their dicks?" she finishes for me "Exactly!" we both give each other a high-five and laugh it all of. "But you know even though it's great that he's focusing on his studies it still bothers me that that will be his ONLY goal in life and nothing else, I mean what'll be his next big thing after he wins the Nobel huh?" "I don't know sweetie" she sighs "Well I'll prove to him that he can both concentrate on his work and get a girl at the same time," I raise my chin up in the air for effect "For sure girl, and you'll need all the luck you can get just to convince Sheldon since he's not exactly used to 'change'" "Well he's just going to have to get used to it because life doesn't get better by chance, it gets better by change."
"Wow…" she gives me a look of amazement "It's nothing to be amazed about Penny it's true," "I know but maybe if I told myself that more often when I was younger…maybe-never mind yes you're right" she gives me what seems to be a reassuring smile and gets up.
"Well I'm going to take a quick shower, I've had a long day at work today so cleaning myself up always makes me feel better in the end, if you want you can watch some T.V. or read some magazines I have over there on the counter over there, make yourself at home!" she flashes me with a big smile on her pretty face.
"Thank you Penny I'm grateful to have run into you today you're very caring," flaunting her hand at me "Awe thank you Lalita it's no trouble really besides you're pretty cool yourself we should hang out this weekend when I'm off from work!" I give her my biggest smile "Most definitely!" and with that she left to the bathroom.
I decide on reading one of her Cosmopolitan magazines since I enjoy reading more than watching re-runs of my favorite shows, it just gets boring after a while. Besides something new always happens in a story and that's what keeps me motivated in reading more often; after about fifteen minutes Penny comes out of her room. She's wearing a baby blue camisole and floral shorts combined with some white flip flops while her hair is styled in a messy bun.
"Leonard just sent me a text about five minutes ago saying that they'll be a bit late on coming home, since Raj had to make a pit stop in one of the gas station thanks to a 'Icee' he was drinking in the car," she groans at this but I just giggle "Ah poor Rajesh he never really could control that horrible bladder of his".
A few minutes later I could hear mumbles outside of Penny's door and footsteps drawing nearer to the fourth floor. I realize that Rajesh and his friends have arrived and I become a bit anxious once again since I'm worried on how I should greet Sheldon when he sees me again.
"Oh hey they're back! You want to go now or wait a bit longer?" Penny asks me pointing her thumb towards the door I inhale deeply and say "No it's alright we can go now we've been waiting for almost half an hour anyway…plus I'm a bit anxious on seeing you know who."
"Look Lalita don't worry about it you'll be fine, besides you never know if he may be just as surprised on seeing you again too!" she grabs my wrist and pulls me to towards her door, and in a minute we're both standing in front of room 4A. Penny knocks ferociously at the door and we wait there for about a few seconds until the door cracks open and I see a short bespectacled man with dark glossy curls of brown hair and way too many jackets on. "Hey Penny sorry we're late umm who's your friend here?" he asked as he opened the door a bit further "Uh didn't Raj tell you guys anything about having a friend over?" Penny crossed her arms and scooted over so that he could get a better look at me "Hey weren't you that girl that he went out with those few years ago?" pointing a finger at me with a surprised look on his face.
"Yes I am, Lalita Gupta by the way it's a pleasure seeing you again um…" I ask as I extend my hand out "Leonard! Leonard Hofstadter and same to you Lalita" he says after shaking my hand giving me a sweet grin while twiddling with his fingers together.
As soon as my name was mentioned I see Raj come from behind Leonard flashing me a wide smile. "Lalita you're here! Welcome back!" he moves Leonard out of the way as he comes to give me a warm embrace. Everyone including myself simply look at him in complete and utter shock.
"Rajesh you're actually talking to me! And you're sober…you are sober aren't you?" I glare at him "Yes I assure I am not drunk I took some of the medication pills I told you about just like I promised," he gives me a very rare smile not that toothy grinned one from the restaurant but one that reminds me of that little boy from our years in India…I haven't seen that smile since we were children and if I'm being honest I kind of miss it.
"Hey wait a minute how come you never took those pills before huh Raj?" Leonard asks him with his arms crossed; "Anyway! I'm so glad you could make it I apologize once again for making you wait this long," ignoring Leonard's question.
"Oh don't worry about that I was hanging out with Penny over there the whole time so I got a chance to know her for a while, she's a very interesting girl isn't she?" I give her a little smile as she returns the gesture with a wide one. "Yes she is..." Leonard whispers from behind which seemed to have made her a bit uncomfortable. "Well we can't stay out here forever you guys come on let's go inside!" Penny half yells at as she quickly scurries inside the room. Leonard just gives her a confused look and shrugs his shoulders as we all enter the apartment which seemed a few inches bigger than Penny's.
"So tell me how your flight was?" Raj asks me as he sits down on the right side of the couch. For some reason everyone looks relieved that I took the sofa chair, instead of next to Penny who's sitting in the middle of the couch. "Well I was either reading or sleeping throughout the entire flight so I guess it went by pretty well," I grin at him. "I'm glad and how is it with your family over there in India is Maanika still being a handful with you?" "No not really she's actually busy with creating more sketches for her new clothing line," I giggle. "Whoa hold on! You're sister is a fashion designer?" Penny asks me with wide eyes. "Oh yes did I forget to mention that sorry I just don't like bragging about these kind of things? But yes my younger sister is in fact a fashion designer; she's been sewing fabrics together since we were little girls, she'd make us our own dresses from time to time and draw her own creations from the top of her head." "That's awesome!" she said with a look that reminded me of a child in a candy store.
"It is isn't it? Everyone in the family noticed how talented she was in making her own attire and many people praised her for her works so she decided to take the chance of becoming a designer for both men and women's attire, and well surprisingly she did it! I was very proud of her and I still am yet she never ceases to amaze me with her fabulous clothes."
"Wow…if that were me I'd be green with envy seeing my sister bask in the limelight like that," she smirks at me. "Well see that's the thing Penny Lalita never was one to envy her sister, ever since I knew her she'd always admire what she did and her parents loved them both equally with all their hearts, they never chose who they liked more," Raj corrects Penny who's looking blankly at him for a couple of seconds.
"Sorry Raj I'm just not used to having you talk to me without a beer in your hand, and well see I've lived in a household where I always had to compete with each of my siblings on who could get our parent's attention more," she says while looking down at her lap.
"Oh Penny I'm sorry to hear that but I'm almost certain that one day you'll be able to make them proud in whatever you wish to pursue in," I tell her as Leonard brings us a glass of water for each of us. "Thank you Leonard," "No problem so um tell us wh-"but before he could continue his sentence someone cuts him off from the hallway behind us.
"Leonard have you by any chance seen my pocket watch? I left it on the top of my computer desk over there but then-"I slowly turn around and come face to face with the man that I've been dying to see for over three years. And now here he is standing in the other side of the room wearing a gray undershirt with a red t-shirt on top decorated with a yellow lightning bolt combined with a pair of brown plaid pants.
His still amazingly blue eyes are staring right back at me with a dear in the headlights look; and I can tell that he completely forgot to finish on what he was going to say because next thing I now he's slowly walking towards me. I notice that I'm absently standing up from my sofa chair and turning myself fully around. "Hello…Sheldon it's a pleasure to see you again" I give him my biggest smile and place my hands behind my back as I take one more step closer to him.
Everyone in the apartment is dead silent as they all stare at the two of us; we both simply can't take our eyes off of one another until Sheldon finally decides to speak again. "I-it's you…Princess Panchali you're back…welcome" he gives me the most adorable grin I've ever seen and my heart soars. "Thank you it's good to be back ," I smile at him once again.
A/N: I HAD TO EDIT A FEW MISTAKES HERE AND THERE SO THIS HERE IS THE RENEWED CHAPTER TO CHAPTER 2!
