Chapter 4

Disclaimer: I don't own the Vampire Diaries. I'm just borrowing. Only the story is mine.

Note: Okay, guys, I just got an idea for the next chapter of "Light in the Darkness" while I was reading a new review from vamplover2011. Thank you for the motivation, I appreciate it! Thanks also go out to my other fans who have given me reviews. You guys are the best! No spoilers, except the action takes place shortly after the scene in the room.

Hotel Bar – After the Scene in the Room...

Damon threw his head back as he took a swig of the drink he had gotten at the bar. He had come down here to take his mind off what he had nearly done to Elena. It was bad enough that he had forcefully fed from her, but to nearly rape her on top of it? That was a one way ticket to hell, if he wasn't on his way there already. Shit, he hated to think of what could've happened had he not stopped himself after feeding from her.

"Damon?"

Suddenly, Elena's voice was heard over his shoulder and Damon turned to see her standing there. She was wearing one of the sundresses and, around her neck, she wore a scarf that she must've bought at the gift shop to conceal the bite mark.

"Go back to the room, Elena," he replied. "I don't want to talk about it."

"Well, I do," said Elena. "Damon, I didn't exactly enjoy what you did to me earlier."

Damon growled at her. "Which part? You're going to have to be specific."

Elena scowled. "Which part? What the hell kind of a bullshit answer is that? I'm trying to talk to you and you're being an ass."

"I would've given a better answer had I known what the hell you're talking about," said Damon. "If you told me specifically what you didn't enjoy..."

Elena fumed and slapped him. While it didn't hurt him (but, it did hurt her because her palm was stinging from the impact), she had to let him know that she didn't appreciate the way he was acting right now.

"You always have to prove how much shit you can throw at people, don't you?" she said. "You always have to be hurtful, don't you? Well, congratulations, Damon, because you just proved it to me. It was bad enough that you dragged me here against my will, but then, you could very well have raped me if you hadn't changed your mind at the last minute!"

She went to slap him again, but Damon caught her wrist, holding it in a vice grip. Not liking this at all, Elena tried to slap him with her other hand, but he caught that too. Elena struggled against his grip, but he held on tighter.

Pulling her closer to him, he said, "Don't ever do that again! You forget, little girl, that I'm stronger than you, so don't toy with me, go it?"

"Damon, let go of me," said Elena. "Please, you're hurting me." Tears stung her eyes and began to fall as she said again, "Damon, I mean it, let go of me."

It was here that Damon finally released her, watching as she stood there, sobbing. Great, he was really on his way to hell now. For a moment, there was nothing but silence between them, with the exception of Elena's sobs. The silence was short-lived, however, because Elena spoke after finding her voice.

"Damn it, Damon, why do you always make everything so hard? All I want is to help you feel again and what did I get out of it? Nothing but pain!"

Damon raised an eyebrow and was about to say something in his defense, but didn't want to have every guest in the hotel hear this, so he grabbed Elena by the arm and escorted her to the ladies' room, checking to see if there weren't any other guests in there. When he saw that they were alone, he closed the door and locked it, looking at Elena.

"Why is this so important to you, Elena? Why do you want me to feel again? So you can pretend to love me and then treat me with contempt the second we get home?"

"I want you to feel again because I know that this isn't who you are," she replied, tears streaming down her face as she spoke. "It might have been who you were before I met you, but it's not who you are now. You're better than this, Damon. I know you've been hurt and believe me, you didn't deserve any of it."

"That doesn't change anything," said Damon. "Even if I started feeling again, it wouldn't make a difference."

"It does to me." Elena refused to give up, not when she had hope that Damon would let his humanity come through again.

Damon said nothing to that, just looked at her with a sneer on his face. He knew that any attempt to argue with her would be met with a stubborn act, so what was the point in saying anything? But then, if he didn't, Elena would try to get him to talk by pestering him.

"Let's say that I actually do turn my humanity back on again," he said. "Will your feelings for me be genuine? Tell me so that I can at least prepare myself for whatever disappointment I'm going to be in for later."

"I swear to you, Damon, I'm not going to pretend to have feelings for you," said Elena. "They will be genuine. I know you don't believe me, but just humor me, okay? Let me prove to you that I'm not making any of it up."

"After what I did to you..."

"I don't care about that," said Elena. "It happened, yes, but I want to forget it...without compulsion." Not giving him a chance to reply, she added, "You could buy me a drink. Drinking is the fastest way to forget your problems, right?"

Again, Damon didn't say anything to her. Damn, she drove a hard bargain. He only hoped that he wasn't going to regret this.

Note: Better later than never, huh? Stay tuned!
