Charlie led Bella up to her room, a small frown on his face. Upon arriving back in Forks, Bella had suddenly weakened and was shivering and tensing up every few minutes. He laid her down in her bed and covered her with extra quilts.
Moving silently back downstairs, where Fred and Angela as well as the Cullen 'kids' had gathered, he found Alice explaining to his son and Angela what had happened. Fred proved to be quite like his father by shredding their cover story to bits. However, when Charlie stepped in, vouching for the story, saying he believed it and he supported Bella in her decision to drop the case, Fred stayed quiet.
Angela was continually glancing upwards, worried for her friend.
"Dad's on his way Charlie. Esme's coming over with him, if that's okay…" Alice said to Charlie as she pulled him away from the others.
Charlie nodded limply, his mind still on his daughter, who suddenly seemed to be catching up with the shock of being kidnapped.
"With Angela and Fred here, we can't really talk much about everything…" Alice explained with furrowed eyebrows.
"I know Alice…I'm more worried about Bella now. She seemed fine earlier. Now she's…suddenly sick." Charlie said shaking his head.
He moved back into the living room and slumped down into his armchair. Edward moved into the kitchen and started searching the cupboards and fridge for ingredients to make dinner.
Angela joined him a minute later, "What are you doing?"
"Making dinner. Bella usually does it and she's…and Charlie doesn't look like he'll be awake for long."
Angela looked at him with raised eyebrow but didn't comment other than ask what he was making.
"Broiled Salmon with herb mustard glaze, Rice Pilaf…"
"Bella and I make coconut macaroons yesterday..."
"Good, that's desert then…"
During their expedition in the kitchen, Charlie had indeed fallen asleep. Fred took the initiative and moved him to his bedroom and went back into the living room to find Alice and Rose cleaning.
"Where's Emmett and Jasper?" Fred asked the girls.
Rose looked up for her magazine stacking and smiled, "Emmett's doing laundry and Jasper's out back chopping firewood."
Fred's eyes widened, "Um…Emmett's doing laundry?"
Rose chuckled and nodded, "He says it keeps his mind off…other things. That way he wouldn't punch anything."
"Somehow, I expected Emmett to be the one chopping wood…" Fred said with a shake of his head, "I'll go join Jasper."
Rose nodded and glanced at Alice, who was smiling sadly.
"A lot has changed since September, hasn't it?" Rose commented.
Alice nodded, "For the better though."
Rose smiled, "Yes, for the better."
Twenty minutes later
Carlisle entered Bella's room and immediately frowned as he took in her unnaturally pale skin. Bella was pale, but she was never had this sickly complexion. He listened in on her heart, which only caused his frown to deepen further.
He approached the bed silently and lightly touched her shoulders to wake her. When she didn't immediately move he decided to leave her a bit longer, instead he checked her vitals.
His eyes widened as he read her temperature. Carlisle wasted no time as he called out for Charlie to join him in the room.
Charlie noticed the worried expression on the doctor's face and made his way quickly over to Bella.
He lightly jostled her shoulders and called out her name, "Bella…Bells…"
"She has a high fever and she's probably exhausted. You should let her sleep." Carlisle said as he approached the bed as well.
Charlie glanced at him but focused on his daughter, "How extreme are her injuries?"
"Surprisingly, not as bad as I thought. Her ankle must have only twisted but we should get it x-rayed anyways."
"I don't suppose you have one of those at your house, do you?" Charlie asked with a humourless chuckle.
Carlisle's lips twitched, "Actually, I do…"
The police chief heartily laughed at the vampire doctor's deer in the head lights expression, "One of the perks of being…like you I suppose."
Carlisle cleared his throat, unsure of how to reply. All of his vampire children had spoken to him of how Charlie had figured everything out and how easily he took the news. Bella definitely took more of her characteristics from her father.
"Don't worry Carlisle. I don't discriminate…" Charlie said with a chuckle.
Bella's voice surprised both men, "Told you he wasn't racist…erm…species-ist? Whatever…Dad's heart and mind wouldn't let him be a close-minded dogmatist."
Carlisle spoke up, "How are you?"
Bella sat up, stretching a bit before shaking her head, "Good, actually. My ankle doesn't hurt anymore. In fact…" she stood up and leaned her weigh slowly onto the once broken ankle, she frowned and turned to the two men watching her, "I don't think it's even broken anymore…"
Carlisle chuckled, "I don't believe it was actually broken to begin with."
She shook her head, "It was definitely broken. Rose had to set it back in place when we got to the motel yesterday."
As if on cue, Rose entered the room, "Dinner's almost ready." She caught sight of Bella standing and glared, "Get back in bed. You have a broken ankle."
Bella rolled her eyes and attempted to walk over to Rose, only to stumble a bit.
She stared down at her miraculously healed ankle and shook it, "I don't think this is mine…It feels weird."
"'Cause it's BROKEN!" Rose scowled as she lifted Bella and placed her back in bed, in a matter of seconds.
Charlie stared a bit wide eyed, due more to wonder than fear. Carlisle eyed him for any sign of discomfort but shook his head with a smile on his face when he saw none.
Bella grumbled, "I'm telling you. It's not. Not anymore at least…" she trailed off and absently rubbed the new scar in her palm.
Rose rolled her eyes and patted her head, "Of course Bells. I'll bring up your dinner. Charlie, do you want me to bring a plate for you too?"
Charlie nodded, a grin on his face, "Who's the cook?"
"Edward and Angela…" Rose said and chuckled at the look of surprise on the human's face, "He has a weakness for Food Network…claims it helps him keep the thoughts out…"
Charlie was about to question her statement but Bella cut him off, "Another time dad. We need food."
Cullen Residence, following day
Bella scowled as Edward lifted her out of her father's cruiser and took her into the house.
"Crossing the threshold already Bella?" Emmett joked as he stepped up to them and kissed her forehead, "How's my little sis doing today? You weren't very chatty last night."
Bella's scowl deepened, "I wonder why?! OH, yeah! It's because someone had the smart idea to carry me around like a baby…even to the toilet!"
Charlie grinned at the byplay.
Emmett faked surprise, "Well excuse me for wanting to make sure you were served like a queen!"
"Emmett, you cooed at me…" Bella deadpanned.
Emmett shrugged and grinned as he grabbed her out of Edward's arms and took her into the room Carlisle had set up for the examination.
Edward glared at his back but settled for leading Charlie into the room as well.
It didn't take long for Carlisle to finish his work on Bella's ankle and non-existent scars and bruises, which she insisted were there only seven hours ago.
"Victoria, she can tell you. She saw them…being administered."
Charlie glared at his daughter, "'Being administered'? That's what you call being mutilated like an animal?"
Bella frowned, "I wasn't mutilated…" she trailed off, sensing her own denial, "Where is Victoria, anyways?"
Carlisle glanced at Charlie before answering, "She never showed up like you assumed she would. No one has spoken to or seen her since yesterday…"
Bella sighed and shrugged, "Probably needs alone time. I would too if I was in her shoes. But back to the topic at hand. I had cuts and bruises. Rose, Emmett and Jasper all saw them. You too dad…"
"Well, what happened to them?" Charlie asked tolerantly confused.
Carlisle paused before speaking worriedly, "You weren't bitten, were you?"
Both Bella and Charlie were taken off guard with that question. Charlie sighed with ease when Bella shook her head.
"Why would you ask that? Am I…Am I showing signs of a change?"
The blonde patriarchal vampire frowned, "Not entirely…"
"Explain…"Bella said shortly.
"You may not have noticed this, but you've grown paler…"
"I was injured. Blood loss maybe?"
"You said you only had minor cuts. Not enough to factor in the magnitude of blood loss you're assuming. There's also the fact that said cuts have magically healed, including your once broken ankle, in no less than two days. Which leads me to another point. Your ankle was broken...However, it wasn't set correctly."
Bella groaned audibly, "Oh no…I know where this is going. You have to break it and reset it, right?"
Noticing Carlisle's confused expression, she answered, "I broke my arm once and Renee neglected to take me to the hospital soon enough. Lucky for me her then boyfriend noticed it and took me instead. I wonder what happened to him…He turned out to be gay, you see and his parents hated it, so he left Phoenix a few months later…I should probably get in contact with him, he was—"
"She…neglected to do a lot of good things for you. I don't know your mother, but I don't like her very much from the stories you tell." Carlisle half-growled, startling both humans. He cleared his throat, "My apologies. I don't appreciate neglectful or abusive parents."
"She wasn't abusive…" Bella began to say but trailed off again, "So…you have to break my leg again? Great..."
"There goes my plan to take you skiing for New Year's..." Edward joked as he covered Bella with her blanket.
She scowled at him, "Oh, you're a comedian now?"
He grinned at her and kissed the tip of her nose, "What can I say, you bring out the best in me."
It was her turn to grin at him now, "That's your best comedian? Damn, that's sad."
He smiled but was suddenly serious, "Do you want me to stay tonight?"
She looked affronted, "No, I'm good."
"It's no trouble..."
"No Edward. I'll be fine. I don't need you looming over me when I dream of T.O.P, okay?"
Edward narrowed his eyes at her, "Who?"
She gapped at him and clutched her heart, "How dare you? You don't know who T.O.P is? I'm sickened."
"Bella..." he sighed exasperatedly.
"And me my phone. You can't exist on this earth without knowing who my best dream mate is!"
After tapping at the screen of her phone for a few seconds, she handed it back to him, "This my love, is...my other love." She grinned mischievously at the jealous glint in his eyes.
Edward looked at the screen and was silent for a few minutes as the video played through and began to repeat. He watched it for a second time then turned to Bella in confusion.
"What just happened?" he asked in awe.
She squealed, "You've been T.O.P-ified. That was his new video DOOM DADA. Best thing ever!" she said, clapping her hands.
Edward scratched his head and placed the phone onto her bedside table, "Um...he has...um...nice hair?"
"And face...and voice...and Swag! He's the embodiment of a dreamgasm."
Edward frowned at her, "I should be mad that you're obsessed with this person, but I'm not...why?"
Bella shrugged, a goofy smile on her face, "Maybe 'cause you know it's hopeless trying to compete."
He chuckled, "Probably..." he then had a thoughtful expression on his face as he sat beside her on the bed, "Hey, do you think I can pull off that hairstyle?"
A week later
Bella groaned as she attempted to scratch her leg with a spatula. Charlie chuckled and snatched it from her.
"No Bella. The doc told you not to do that." He said, laughing when she stuck her tongue out at him.
He was making breakfast, with the help of Angela. Bella had her leg propped on another chair, glaring at them both every few seconds.
Every time Charlie or Bella mentioned any of the Cullens, they would stop almost instantly, afraid to let the secret slip. This always caused the air to thicken around them as the conversation seemed to struggle back to life. Angela, who was spending the hols with Bella and Charlie, remained oblivious to the elephant in the room.
"It's Christmas Eve...shouldn't I be given leeway for today at least? My leg doesn't even hurt anymore!"
"No Bell—Stop shaking your leg like that!" Charlie scolded as he grabbed her cast and held it still.
Bella let out a long groan, "But dad..."
"Isabella..." Charlie said sternly, causing her to huff.
"Fine fine..." Bella huffed, "Have you spoken to Billy yet? I was hoping to see Jake today..."
Charlie looked away, suddenly interested in the bacon he was frying, "Uh, no...But I got on to Jake...he's sick. Or claims to be anyways."
"Oh." Bella mumbled sadly.
Later in the day, with Angela out with Fred on a date, Bella and Charlie visited the Cullens.
Esme was already baking up a storm and Bella made Edward fetch her around to help decorate the house with Alice. He didn't complain of course.
Charlie and Carlisle were in the study, discussing a Christmas Eve Dinner for the homeless in the area, which they were hosting at a local diner that evening. Charlie, who was curious of the charity work that Alice had mentioned to him, was the one to think of the event and the vampire doctor was all too excited to deny helping.
The two head of house spearheaded the entire event and spent three days in the past week, in the areas around and in Forks, spreading the word of the dinner to the locals and homeless.
Esme was on board like ham and cheese. She invited several women from Forks to help with the cooking, but with their gossipy and jealous nature she didn't get much luck in that department. Angela's mother had called a few friends and told them off, which resulted in at least two women volunteering to bring something and help serve.
Rose and Jasper were helping Esme, while Emmett was employed by the pixie to find two perfect Christmas trees, one for Charlie's house and one for themselves.
Edward set Bella on the couch with a quick kiss on the lips, "I'll go see what's taking Em so long."
She nodded quickly and picked up a nearby magazine. A minute into turning the pages absently she got bored and glanced at the whirlwind that was Alice.
She hastily blew a strand of hair out of her eyes and looked towards the kitchen, her nose telling her that something delicious awaited her in there.
Deciding that sitting on her ass was doing nothing for her she forced herself up and started waddling in the direction of the kitchen.
Surprised that Alice didn't try to stop her she hurried off (or tried to).
She found Esme, Rose and Jasper all loading food into large containers.
They looked up at her, each with worry and surprise.
"Why didn't we hear you clunking in?" Jasper asked with wide eyes.
She grinned mischievously, "I'm a ninja."
"You shouldn't be walking around Bella." Esme scolded her lightly.
"I'm fine." She sighed, "Look!" she said and she stomped the casted up leg unto the hardwood floor.
Esme and Rose squeaked and hurried towards her. They both grabbed an arm and lifted her back into living room and deposited her unto the couch.
"Why's your skin so..." Rose began in a small voice.
Bella looked up at them in annoyance, "I'M CAPABLE OF WALKING YOU KNOW?"
"Bella?" Charlie called out when he heard her voice.
She turned her glare at him, unsure of why she was suddenly so angry, "What?"
"Wha—?" he began but was cut off by her sudden movement.
She stood and stomped her broken leg, "I'm fed up with you people dotting on me. I'm fine. My leg, is fine." She attempted to growl and stomped her feet again.
The vampires and human stared at her, dumbstruck, none of them noticing the crack that ran up the cast and those in the floor she'd stomped on.
She looked down to the cast and glared. With one swift movement she reached down and broke the cast, effectively freeing her leg.
"There..." She grinned and wiggled her fully healed leg, "See, it's fine..."
Charlie was the first to speak, "What's going on?"
