And all along I believed I would find you
Time has brought your heart to me
I have loved you for a thousand years
I'll love you for a thousand more
~ A Thousand Years
Post-Ep for 3x15- All My children. Caroline goes to Klaus and apologizes.
Caroline took a deep breath, and knocked on the huge door. Rebekah answered it a moment later.
"What do you want?"
"To see Klaus," Caroline answered.
"In the study," Rebekah answered, stepping aside. She'd let Klaus decide how to deal with this girl.
Caroline paused in the doorway, frozen. Klaus burning a pages covered with pictures of her. Not that him burning them surprised her, not at all. Not after what she'd done. That he'd drawn so many of them is what surprised her.
"What is it, Bekah?"
"It's me," Caroline said softly.
Klaus dropped the rest of the pages to the floor, and sped to stand inches in front of Caroline.
She met his gaze. "I came to apologize. Not for distracting you, but for using your feelings for me to do it. They just said they needed me to distract you while they went after Kol. They didn't tell me why. They didn't tell me it would hurt you."
"And if they had told you?" Klaus demanded, his voice low and intense.
"I…" She looked down, then back up to meet his eyes. "I don't know. But Klaus, they were trying to stop your mother from killing all of you! Does that matter to you at all?"
"They were trying to save Elena!"
"That too," she admitted. "And you want Elena alive for your own reasons, so why are you mad they wanted to save her?"
"I'm not mad about that," he admitted.
"No. You're mad that I used your feelings for you against me, and that your mother and brother betrayed you. I am sorry about your mother and brother. I… okay, I can't say I know how much having your family back together meant to you, but I do know it's what you wanted more than anything in the world, and you thought you had it, then… you lost it. I'm sorry. No one deserves that. Not even you."
"Not even me," he said, and gave a bitter laugh.
"You've hurt and killed a lot of people, Klaus. Ruined a lot of lives. You don't get to play the innocent victim."
"But you still don't think I deserve what Ester and Finn did?"
"Not like that, no. Not with no way to defend yourselves. Not from your family. From Stefan and Damon – even Mikael – you expected it and could defend yourself. But from her…"
"What about from you?" he countered.
"You said you fancied me. I never said I liked you. I never asked you to follow me out of the Grill," she reminded him. "That was your own choice. You could have stayed in there with Kol."
"Love is a vampire's greatest weakness," Klaus muttered so low that even Caroline's vampire hearing couldn't make out the words.
"I need to get back to Bonnie. Her mother is transitioning. I just… I needed to come apologize. I… appreciate the bits of humanity that you've let me see. I know Stefan used to be friends with you. That tells me there is something in you worth saving, and I've seen it myself. Don't let what I did stop you from trying to connect with people. Really connect with them. It looks like your sister is staying. Try being a real brother to her again."
"Friends. That's all I can offer… for now."
"Like you told me on my birthday: I could have a thousand more birthdays. No one knows what will happen in a thousand years. Maybe I'll be with Tyler. Maybe I'll be with you. Maybe I'll be with Damon of all people. I don't know. But right now, all I can be is your friend… If you'll have me?" she wasn't sure why she felt so sad at the idea that he might not accept her offer. She wasn't' sure what was between them, but couldn't deny that there was something. She liked the version of her that he saw, and liked the version of him that she saw.
"Friends. With the understanding that I give my friends gifts," he added. It wasn't what he really wanted, but it was a start. It was better than nothing, and something he could work with. And at least she was willing to admit that with time things might change. He could afford to be patient and give her some time.
Caroline rolled her eyes, but nodded.
"Then, as a friend, tell me something: why are you here?"
"I told you: to apologize," Caroline replied.
"I hated you. I did. But then you saved me. You gave me a reason to live. You saw beauty and light and strength in me. Things even my friends don't always see. You love horses, just like I do. I thought I wanted you dead, but… I don't. If you try anything evil, I'm going to help my other friends stop you, but… I don't want you dead. That's what I learned tonight. When I saw you in pain… When I thought you might die right there in front of me. I don't want you to die, Klaus. I want you to find your humanity again. To go back to being the guy I see glimpses of, the guy Stefan was friends with. The brother Elijah and Rebekah love. I couldn't be the one to drive that humanity further away… So I came to apologize."
"And offer your friendship," he concluded.
"Thank you. Now, as we both love horses, why don't we go riding tomorrow, love?"
"Really?" Caroline said, her face lighting up in the way that most entranced Klaus.
"Yes, really," he replied, already planning how to make the arrangements. He'd enjoy it immensely, and even if not, it would be more than worth it just for the delight and joy on her face right now.
"It's a…" Caroline's voice trailed off, and her smile faltered.
"…date between friends," he finished. Her smiled returned.
"Phone," she said, holding out her hand. He handed it to her. She quickly programmed in her number, then returned it to him. "Call or text me the details," she said, turning to leave.
He nodded agreement.
Watching her walk away Klaus smiled. Kol had been right, she did look good walking away from him. Patience be damned. She wouldn't be with Tyler in a hundred days, much less a thousand. And the idea of her with Tyler in a thousand years… No. She'd be celebrating her 1000th birthday with him, Klaus mused. He went inside and began making arrangements for their ride the next day.
