Hey! So I watched the River and I love it! But this story takes place from the episode "A Better Man" and if you haven't seen the episode, this may be confusing. But hopefully if you have seen the episode and if you read this and you like it, please review :)
Ava stood at the rail of the Magus; her long, knotted black hair cascading down her back. She had been outside all day and hadn't bothered to do anything with her hair and just threw it up in a bun and tied it. On the ship, no one really cared what you looked like. She could pass being from the amazon, because her father was from the amazon but her mother was not. Her mother was from Boston and she had met Ava's father when she was on a trip in the amazon. She fall head over heels for him and vice versa. Her father had not hesitated in going to Boston and married her mother and Ava was born. But then when she was four, tragedy struck and her mother was in a car accident and was killed instantly. Her father could not take it; the only thing that was able to pull him through was Ava. But he could not stay in Boston, so they moved to the amazon. She had grown up in the amazon and new the jungle and rivers like the back of her hand. That's why she was a part of this rescue mission for Dr. Cole, she was a guide. But her father was uncomfortable with her going on this trip, he kept saying how she was too young, but she persuaded him it was fine. She knew which plants to avoid and where the snakes were and so on, but she knew that's not the reason he was worried. The reason he was worried was because Captain Kurt Brynildson was also on this voyage. See, she had met Kurt before.
Two years ago, she and her father decided to go on a weeklong trip through the forest. On the fourth day, they ran into Kurt…
"Come on Papa!" Ava called behind to her father who was trying to keep up with her.
"You're walking to fast" he mumbled in return.
Ava smiled to herself but then she heard a twig snap. She stopped and looked around and that's when Kurt stumbled out of the trees. He was beaten and bleeding and he had to grab a tree branch to keep from falling to the ground.
"Are you alright?" she asked him and hesitantly took a step forward. He opened his mouth to say something, but closed it and then he collapsed on the forest floor.
"Papa!" she screamed to her father and then ran to Kurt. She dropped her heavy bag and knelt down beside him and put her fingers to his neck and was relieved to find a pulse.
"Ava- what happened?" her father asked her and ran to her side. He did the same thing as Ava did and checked for a pulse and then he pushed the man over onto his back.
"What's wrong with him papa?" Ava asked. She had become frantic because if you get even a cut in the amazon, there were numerous infections you could get that could be fatal. And this man had many cuts, and possibly more that they could not see.
"I don't know. Come, help me carry him. There is a village not too far from here" her father responded and then they both stood up. Ava grabbed her bag and then she and her father knelt down and they both took one of the man's arms and put it over their shoulders and began walking, but it was not an easy task. The man was very well muscled which caused him to be quite heavy. But they managed and arrived at the village in twenty minutes and her father left Ava with the man to go and talk to the healer.
She had gotten the man on his back and she was now sitting beside him. She hesitantly reached over and touched his forehead, but then his hand shot up and grabbed her wrist. She caught her breath as his eyes fluttered open and he turned to her.
"Where am I?" he asked and propped himself up on his elbows.
"You're in the forest, please lie down. You have received quite a few injuries" she said and pulled her hand away from him.
"Who are you?"
"My name is Ava. Who are you?"
He glared at her and did not answer.
"You don't have to tell me your last name. But I would like to call you something other than man" she asked him.
"Kurt" he replied.
"Ok, it's nice to meet you Kurt" she said and no sooner had the words come out of her mouth, her father had come running back with the healer.
"Get up Ava, he does not want you to see" her father said and grabbed her arm and began to pull her away. Kurt looked after her, with a look that said "don't leave"
"Father I have to stay" she said and pulled away from him and walked back to Kurt. She knelt beside him and looked at the healer, who only nodded.
She had no idea what the healer was doing; he chanted strange words and sprinkled bits of dried herbs over Kurt's wounds. After half an hour, the healer appeared to be almost done but then he began to chant. He became increasingly louder and the sunny sky turned stormy and lightening flashed. Ava was resting her hand beside Kurt's, their fingers barley brushing, and suddenly she felt a sharp burn go through her and Kurt seemed to feel it to. She yelped and hopped up and Kurt grunted and quickly moved away from her. The healer looked at them with amazement, and then he pulled out a small, sharp bone and stabbed Kurt's shoulder and Ava felt it in her own shoulder, she yelped again and clutched her shoulder. Kurt gaped at her and her father quickly ran over to her.
"What happened?" he asked her and began to examine her.
"That's impossible" she muttered to herself and then looked at Kurt…
What happened that day was unexplainable. But ever since then, whenever Kurt and Ava were close to each other, they literally felt each other's pain.
"Why are you out here by yourself?"
Ava immediately recognized the German accent.
"Couldn't sleep" she said when he came and stood beside her.
"You know you should not be out here by yourself. If you get hurt, I hurt to" he said.
"If I didn't know you, I would think that is romantic"
"Unfortunately you do know me"
"Will you please stop talking like that? You think I don't know that you don't want to be around me? You made clear enough a year ago" she screamed and Kurt quickly covered her mouth with his hand.
"Be quiet. And I am sorry if I hurt you that badly, I never meant-
"Oh, you never meant to. Kurt I know you well enough to know when you are lying" she said when she was able to push his hand off her face.
"Go to bed Ava" he said, his voice low and icy. She hated when he used that tone.
"You talk to me as if I am your sister!"
"You can mean nothing more to me than that. I am your protector"
"I don't need a protector"
"Well you have one anyway. Now go to bed" he said and with that he turned his back to her.
She glared at him but she went back to her room and dropped in the bunk, hating Kurt with a passion at the moment. After what happened at the village, they had spent a great deal of time together. And Ava started to have feelings towards him, but then a year ago he suddenly broke it off. He just came one day and said they couldn't see each other anymore and he had actually made Ava cry. She had not cried since her mother died. But no matter how much she hated Kurt, it was impossible for her to stay away from him. And he had the same problem with her.
The next day she was helping Lena cut up some vegetables when Clark over. She had refused to speak to him or Aj at first, but she had grown a little more comfortable with them.
"Who do you think is Captain Ava?" Clark asked her after he finished talking to Lena.
"I don't know" she said and continued cutting.
"You must think someone should be? Anyone at all?"
"I think Tess wants to believe she is Captain, but I think she is sometimes blinded by the need to find her husband that she forgets the well fare of the crew"
"Nice, and what about Kurt? How do you feel about him?" Clark asked her and put the camera closer to her face.
"I don't know" she muttered and grabbed the vegetables and walked away.
"Just leave her alone Clark" she heard Lena say from behind her. She was starting to like Lena as a friend. She continued walking until she found Kurt cooking on a barbecue. She laid the vegetables on it and then sat on the rail and rested her head in her hand. Kurt didn't say anything and just continued flipping the food.
"So you're not talking to me?" she asked him.
"Do you really want to do this now?" he muttered and Ava opened her mouth to answer but then Lincoln started singing and playing the guitar, so she closed her mouth and smiled.
"I think you're getting a sunburn" Kurt mumbled and peered at her shoulder.
"It's nice to know you care"
"Go put on sunscreen"
Ava smirked but went down to her room and grabbed the bottle and squirted some cream out and put it on her shoulder. She hated taking orders from people but she knew that if she didn't listen Kurt would just make her do it in the end. She decided to braid her hair, just so it wouldn't get in her eyes, when she heard gunshots. She ran up to the deck and she saw Lincoln and Kurt jumping in the water.
"What happened?" she asked Lena.
"There is man in the river!" she responded. She seemed really scared.
Kurt and Lincoln brought a young man named Jonas back on the ship, and it was discovered he was very sick with malaria. Kurt told Ava to leave and when she tried to refuse he grabbed her by the waist and pulled her out of the room and out into the sun.
"Stay here" he ordered and returned to Jonas. Ava glared at him as he walked away but then she sat down and leaned against the wall and eventually fell asleep. She didn't wake until she heard a thump against the window beside her. Her eyes shot open and she saw a dead bird beside her.
Tess and Lena decided there was a storm coming so they rushed to tie everything down and "batten down the hatches". After they finished, Ava, Lena and Tess were standing together when Jonas came in. Lena ran to him and threw her arms around him.
"I was worried!" she exclaimed. Ava thought she saw a distinct look of jealousy from Lincoln as he watched them.
"When did you re-crew? Where is Emmett?" he asked them. Tess couldn't respond and stared at him, as did Ava.
"What did I say? Where is everyone?" Jonas asked them, starting to look nervous.
"Emmett, the crew… disappeared" Lena told him.
"Everyone? Your dad to?" he asked her and she nodded.
"The tapes show that you were the first to get separated. But that was months ago" Tess said.
"Months? I was hanging there for months?" he asked.
Ava gaped at him, it was impossible that he was hanging there for months; you could never survive in the forest without proper equipment for months. Ava pinched her lip between her fingers, as she always did when she was thinking but then she looked outside. The sky was changing and she ran out to stand by Emilio.
"What's happening?" she asked him.
"I don't know" he said but as they continued watching, the storm started to come in fast "hey everyone! Come look at this" Emilio called to the crew.
Everyone came out and looked at the sky, observing the storm coming in. However it wasn't clouds moving, it was bugs. They ran inside and desperately tried to block all the vents that allowed the bugs to come in. Ava hopped on the counter and grabbed some rags and stuffed the air vent, and then she tried to get the bugs that decided to harbor in her hair out.
"It will pass" Lincoln said and he slapped the wall, squashing a bug.
"And what if this isn't a normal storm? This all started when Jonas came aboard. What if he's causing it?" Clark asked him.
"Yeah because I control bugs" Jonas said angrily and slapped his head, trying to get a bug off.
"Jahel says he's bad news. She says we out to toss him overboard. I don't know what's possible anymore but all I know is when that girl gets scared, I listen" he said and looked at Jahel.
Tess walked over to her and asked her some words in Spanish and Jahel said something in return and nodded at Jonas.
"What him? He's only one guy, how can any of this be his fault?" Lincoln said.
Ava was growing increasingly uncomfortable because she was standing next to Jonas, and suddenly he started foaming at the mouth and fell on her, pushing her against the counter. Kurt went to him and pulled him off and put him on the floor. Lincoln started saying things to Kurt, and he sounded angry. Eventually he just said he needed morphine.
"There's no morphine" Kurt responded and threw the medical bag at him. He stood against the wall and stared at Jonas and glanced at Ava. Lincoln couldn't find morphine, so he grabbed a large needle and plunged it into Jonas's chest. Jonas gasped and started coughing, but he was breathing. They got him on the table and took the oxygen machine and got him breathing. Jonas said thank you and then Jahel went over to Lincoln and asked him to pick a card. He chose the Hanging Man, he chose again and again. Every time he chose the Hanging Man.
"The Hanging Man" Jahel said in English.
"I've heard of the Hanging Man" Kurt said "My grandmother told me this story, she called it the "Condemned Man". He was a thief, a grave robber stealing jewels from the dead. He was vain, greedy, arrogant. Death punished the thief, destroying all in her path. Until the Condemned Man felt the torment of dying but not the satisfaction of death. Not living or dead. Trapped. On the gallows forever"
After he finished, they heard the clap of thunder and the rain began. It was coming for Jonas.
Tess ran in with a phone in her hand, telling them they have to see this. She passed it Kurt and Ava watched it over his shoulder and as it played, Tess explained that it would kill all of them for Jonas. And then it was discovered that Jonas had stolen footage from Clark.
"You might want to take a look at this" Clark said and led them to the video room. The tape showed that Emmett had left Jonas in the jungle and the noose made out of the vine came down and took him.
"You were hanging there this whole time?" Lincoln asked him.
"All I remember is pain. You have no idea. How much I just wanted it to end. I prayed but… listen I don't deserve this" Jonas said quickly.
"Emmett threw you off the ship!" Clark said angrily.
"Sometimes it's better to lie" he said and then something happened and everyone fell. While everyone was scrambling to get up, Jonas had run up the stairs and to the deck. Kurt was after him instantly and he grabbed him and pinned him to the wall. Lincoln yelled at Kurt and said how they could not leave an innocent man to die.
"Lincoln he is not innocent!" Ava said when she and Lena reached them.
"He was only doing his job!" he returned. He had pushed Jonas into the helm and was now standing in front of him almost protectively. Clark demanded that Jonas be thrown overboard but Lincoln fought back. Eventually Tess made Jonas tell her everything he knew about where Emmett was, and he told her that Emmett was obsessed with the idea of magic. That he was obsessed with something called the Source. When he told her that's all he knew, she gave the order to get him off the ship.
"We can do this!" Lincoln yelled at her.
"I'm not going to risk your life Lincoln. We could all die here, this is the choice. I'm sorry Jonas, I am sorry. But rescuing Em is more important than Jonas" she said calmly. Kurt and Clark went and grabbed Jonas.
"No, please! Don't let them take me" Jonas yelled.
"No we can't do this! We can't be murderers!" Lincoln said and grabbed Kurt's gun and pointed it at him.
"I don't like guns pointed at me, especially not my own" Kurt responded, glaring at him.
"We can't give into fear! Dad did but I won't!" Lincoln said, at the moment he seemed more scared than anything at the moment.
Suddenly the something hit the ship and Ava heard a gunshot and then she felt pain in her hand; she looked up and saw Kurt shaking his hand and cursing. But as she was looking at him, a vine wrapped around her ankle and pulled her outside. She tried to hold on to the doorway, but the rain made it to slippery and she was pulled out.
"Kurt!" she screamed.
Kurt looked up and without hesitation ran out and grabbed her hand. He had slipped and was on the ground so he grabbed a steal bar to keep from being hauled off the ship himself.
"Please don't let go" she asked him. She was crying now, trying to hold on to Kurt's hand because it was her lifeline.
"Never" he said and squeezed her hand tighter but it was hard because it was raining heavily. But he had to keep holding on.
And then Jonas screamed that he would not let anyone else die because of him and ran out and smashed his phone on a metal. The phone broke and the spirit in it was released. The vine then let go of Ava and she fell to the ground. Kurt let go of her and went to Lincoln and held onto him to keep him away from Jonas who threw himself into the noose and now hung lifeless in the air. Everyone thought he was dead Ava had gotten up and was standing beside Kurt, he looked at her and they held each other's gaze and then the noose snapped and Jonas fell to the ground. Ava covered her mouth and quickly nestled into Kurt's shoulder and he put his arm around her, pulled her close and rested his chin on her head, something he rarely ever did.
The next day everyone tried to go back to their routine, but it was difficult as they were all shaken from the previous night. Jonas survived and Clark offered him a job (and a beer) so he became the newest cameraman. After that, Clark became unusually quiet and was sitting by himself drinking a beer. Lena was at the wheel, Jahel was looking at her cards and Kurt was with his guns. Ava sat across from him but was looking at the water. In the past few weeks, so many things have happened to make her question everything she thought she knew about the jungle. She turned back to Kurt and watched him as he worked. Having him leap after her immediately and being in his arms had made her question everything she thought she knew about him.
