Hello again. Here is chapter 5. I haven't been writing on my computer lately because of the tons of homework and projects relating to the last semester of senior year, but I've written up to chapter 7 on my iPod on the way to school. Anyway, hope you enjoy the chapter :D
Riley stared at himself in the mirror.
The night came and went, and everyone was up and ready… except Riley. The young Venus adept looked at his body one last time to make sure he had everything he needed.
He looked at his leather armour, which was similar to his father's, and the brown belt he wore around his waist, which had his sword and daggers' sheath tied to it, along with a small bag. He had gotten used to using the dagger because he could still use the hilt to punch or push enemies if needed.
After a few seconds of checking himself, his eyes focused on his favorite possession. His father had given him the blue cape he wore through his travels when he was traveling to light the lighthouses. He had outgrown it, and Riley only wore it if he was going away for a while, in fear of it ripping or getting damaged. To him, it made him feel the leader his father was.
"Are you ready to go?" Megan's voice came in as she entered the room.
Megan wore a long sleeved, white robe with a brown sash on her waist. Underneath her robe, Riley knew, she wore a thin layer of armour to protect her from physical attack or arrows. Like Riley, she wore her mother's cape over her shoulders. She also had a wooden staff on her back, held by the sash, and the edge of the cape.
"Yeah, I'm ready," Riley said, quietly. He walked past Megan, and headed outside where everyone else was waiting.
"R-riley, wait…" Megan said quietly, sticking her hand forward a bit. Riley turned slightly. She had spoken so quietly, he thought he imagined something.
"What is it?" Riley asked, completely turning to face her.
"I-I wanted y-you… you t-to…" Megan said nervously. Riley stared at her, wondering what she was going to say. Megan stopped, shook her head, and spoke again.
"I want you to!... Uhmm…" She said, before stopping again. Riley walked closer to her and smiled. The Venus adept wrapped his arms around Megan, who went quiet.
"Don't be nervous, you can tell me whatever is on your mind," Riley said, pulling apart from the hug. Megan stood in silence, with her face getting redder by the second.
"I-it's n-nothing…" She said, forcing a smile to her face.
"Are you sure? It didn't seem like nothing," Riley said, moving his face closer to hers. The Jupiter adept stared at him in shock, and felt her heart begin to pump faster. Riley finally smiled, and stood normally again.
"Alright, we should get going then, just know you can always talk to me," Riley said, waving at her to come with him. Megan shook her head quickly, and walked behind Riley through the house door.
Outside, the other four people stood, waiting for Riley and Megan.
"Late as usual, huh Riley?" Piers joked, as Riley walked towards them all, chuckling.
Beside Piers stood Aaron. He wore the traditional Lemurian sailor clothing, almost identical to the one his father wore in the past, except that he wore the headpiece as a cape because of his shorter hair, and had the sheath of a long sword strapped to his back. Felix had commented that Aaron looked exactly like Piers, minus the long hair.
Riley's vision ended up on Liana. She had woken up earlier than the rest of them. She remembered that she passed out, but said she felt way better than she had yesterday. Liana wore a dark red robe, along with a belt on her waist, similar to Megan, but her robe was shorter and she wore dark leggings underneath it. She also wore a thin layer of armour under her robe; Riley had learned that when he saw Sheba give her a set of Megan's for extra protection on her travels. Sheba had also given her a red scarf, and she had tied her hair into a ponytail. She had a sword's sheath on her back from Felix giving her a light blade after her staff ended up missing. Riley heard his father clear his throat. Riley snapped out of his analytical thoughts and noticed his father was standing in front of him.
Felix stood before his son, holding the Sol Blade's sheath in his hands. Riley reached out to grab it but, before he could, Felix grabbed the orange hilt, took the blade out, and raised it.
"Only two people have been able to use this, the other one being Isaac. I want to see if you are able to wield it," Felix said, holding the sword outwards.
Riley took a slight breath, and grabbed the sword's grip. Felix slowly moved his hand away and, as soon as he did, the sword became as heavy as a boulder, and Riley fell to the ground, along with the sword. Felix quickly picked up the sword, and returned it to its sheath. Riley picked himself up and dusted his clothes off.
"Don't feel discouraged, you hate long swords anyway," Felix said, with a smile. Riley silently took the sword and tied the sheath to his back.
"Dad, why did you change your mind about us going?" Riley asked.
"You seemed eager to want to go, I couldn't deny you that," Felix said, patting the boy's head. Riley smiled, and then turned to the other three teenagers.
"Let's go then," Riley said.
Aaron and Megan nodded and headed alongside their friend. Liana walked forward, but turned to the three adults and bowed her head slightly.
"Thank you for everything," Liana said.
"It was no problem, make sure to visit someday," Sheba said, beginning to wave. The two other adults begin to wave as well, as the group of four slowly headed off into the distance.
As soon as the group was out of sight, Piers turned to Felix.
"What's the real reason you sent them?" Felix asked, seeing through Felix's lie.
"Remember how Isaac's party was originally against lighting the lighthouses?" Felix began. Piers nodded, and Felix continued.
"I'm still considered a part of Saturos and Menadri's party and, to much of Angara, that makes me a villain. Also because they kidnapped Sheba, most of southern Angara also feels that way," Felix said, beginning to walk back. The other two followed him.
"Can't Sheba explain? Isn't she like a princess in Lalivero?" Piers asked. Sheba shook her head.
"Lalivero was hit hard by the lighting. Starting with the Venus Lighthouse's earthquake, natural calamities began to happen at the city. They don't accept that I went with Felix so I decided it would be best if I left them," Sheba said, sounding more sad as she continued.
"Strange. I've sailed past Lalivero many times and had no problems," Piers added, shaking his head.
"They'll be alright, I'm sure. They won't have to go near Lalivero… or Kalay," Felix said, heading inside.
"I wonder why no monsters are attacking," Aaron said, looking around cautiously. Riley walked in front of him with his arms behind his head.
"They're scared of me, isn't that obvious," Riley said, confidently.
"Well, if that's the case, keep up the good work," Aaron said, sarcastically, to his cocky friend, who in return gave him a death glare.
Megan and Liana walked a bit behind them. Megan leaned over a bit.
"It's like this wherever we go," Megan whispered to her, causing her to giggle.
"They sure seem like opposites… are they?" Liana asked Megan, keeping out of earshot of the arguing boys.
"Kinda… Riley wants to be like Felix in terms of strength, but from the stories our parents tell us, Felix was less of a talker, and more of a thinker. Riley is smart, and I'd trust him as our leader, but if something gets him riled up to a certain point, I'm sure he'd put himself in danger…" Megan said, sounding more worried as she neared the end of the sentence. Liana was about to speak, until Megan continued.
"But Aaron is extremely patient and kind, like his father. Aaron isn't like most Mercury adepts in the sense that he never learned the healing abilities they're known for, but Riley and he are almost in sync when they fight. Aaron can also calm him down when he starts to get sidetracked. They also apparently have some secret attack technique they refuse to tell anybody about," Megan finished.
"Ah, I see…" Liana said, raising one hand to her chin. "One last question," Liana said, turning her head towards Megan.
"What is it?" Megan cheerfully asked.
"Do you like Riley?" Liana whispered, with a smirk.
"O-of course I do, he's one of my best friends," Megan said, turning red and tapping her fingers together. She turned her face away from Liana.
"I know, but I meant like like," Liana continued. Megan continued looking away until, to her relief, Aaron spoke up.
"There's the docks!" Aaron said, pointing forward.
The group continued heading towards the docks. As they got closer, a person walked past Riley, stopped, and turned.
"Liana?" The person asked.
"…Jamie?" Liana responded.
"Finally, mom and dad were worried sick about you," Jamie said, walked closer to the group.
"Sorry, some stuff happened, I was heading back now," Liana answered. Jamie turned his gaze to the other three people.
"Who are these guys?" Jamie asked, pointing.
"I'm Aaron, nice to meet you," Aaron spoke up first.
"My name is Megan," Megan said, bowing her head slightly.
The group waited for a response from Riley, but their leader was looking behind himself. Riley eventually turned his head and saw everyone looking at him.
"Sorry, name's Riley," he quickly said.
"This is my brother, Jamie," Liana introduced him. "I'm guessing they sent you to come get me?"
"Yeah, the next ferry leaves in maybe ten or so minutes, I'm lucky I found you so quickly," Jamie said, pulling out two tickets from a small pocket on his side.
"Alright, we should get goin-," Liana said, but was cut off by Riley.
"Everyone, duck!" Riley shouted quickly.
Aaron and Megan quickly lowered their heads. Jamie eventually did as well from seeing them do it. Liana stood confused, in mid sentence. Riley jumped in front of her and raised his right forearm to his face.
Two arrows hit the leather gauntlet. Riley smirked as he pulled them out and threw them on the ground.
"Two people have been following us for a while now," Riley said, grabbing both of his blades. Aaron and Megan drew their weapons and stood beside Riley. "Show yourselves."
Two masked bandits came out from the bushes, with bows on their backs, and their hands above their heads. They walked as they stared at the floor.
"Looks like you caught us," One bandit began, as he looked up. As his eyes settled on the group of teenagers, he elbowed his partner. "They're just kids!"
The two bandits looked at each other and smirked, as they re-drew their bows and held two arrows pointed at the trio.
"Give us whatever you have, and we'll let you go alive," The 'leader' bandit said, motioning his bow to the ground.
"How about you guys leave us alone, and no one has to get hurt," Aaron said, holding his sword with both hands.
"Like we'd lose to some brats," The second bandit said, as they released both arrows. Riley and Aaron moved as the arrows flew past them. Riley and Aaron stepped forward, as Riley turned and looked back.
"Megan, protect Liana and Jamie, Aaron focus on the one on the left," Riley said quickly, beginning to run towards the bandits.
The bandits pulled out swords and headed towards the two boys. The bandits began to slash wildly, and the two adept boys easily evaded their attacks with their own swords.
Liana stepped up to Megan in a hurry.
"Shouldn't we help them?" Liana asked, worriedly.
"I don't think they'll need our help really…" Megan said, watching the battle.
Riley and Aaron stepped back together. Riley looked over and mouthed the word now to his friend, who nodded.
"Frost!" Aaron said, raising his arm up. A layer of ice formed on the bandit's feet, reaching up to their knees. The bandits struggled to move, but their feet were quickly frozen. Riley stood a few yards away. He raised his arm, focused his Psynergy into the two blades, and quickly leapt into the air and hit in between both of the bandits, leaving burn marks on the sides of their clothing, and also leaving them terrified on the ground. The two bandits dropped their swords and their heads to Riley's feet.
"Please don't kill us!" one said.
"We'll never commit another crime again, we swear!" the leader said, looking up.
Aaron and Megan walked over to Riley, who quickly pulled his foot away from the two bandits.
"Should we let them go?" Aaron asked, putting his sword back into its sheath. Riley put his light sword back, and pointed his dagger at the leader.
"Alright, we'll let you go," Riley said. Riley knelt down and picked up the bandit's sword. He spun the sword slightly, and stabbed the ground between the bandits. "But if I hear about you guys again, I won't be missing on purpose," he said, before turning back to his friends.
The harbour was quiet as the boat had not yet arrived. The group of teenagers stood for a few minutes in silence, until Aaron spoke up and pointed at the ship coming from the horizon. Jamie walked over to Riley, who was sitting on a barrel next to Megan.
"Thanks for keeping Liana safe, who knows what could've happened if you hadn't come along," Jamie said, extending his hand. Riley stood up and shook the hand.
"No problem, have a safe trip," Aaron said, walking over. Megan nodded, stood up, and spoke up.
"Make sure to visit when we get back!" Megan said, smiling. Liana smiled back at her.
"Of course I will, thank you guys for everything," Liana said, bowing her head slightly.
The ferry docked itself onto the harbour and people began to exit. After the people had scattered, a man in a sailor uniform began to ask for the next group of passengers. Jamie began to walk with Liana in tow, as they all waved a final goodbye. Riley looked up quickly, and ran forward.
"Liana, wait!" he said, stopping a bit before her. Liana turned her face slightly, and stared at Riley.
"What is it?" She asked a bit confused.
Riley stuck his hand forward and opened it. A small red orb floated from Riley's hand and went to Liana. The orb floated around her a bit before it disappeared before her.
"You'll probably get more use of it than I will," Riley said, pulling back his hand.
"Riley… Are you sure?" Liana asked, nervously.
"It's no problem, it'll keep you safe," Riley said. Riley let out another wave, and Liana quickly ran over and gave him a tight hug.
"Thank you," she whispered before moving back to where she was. She continued with Jamie onto the ship.
The group of three waved until the ship disappeared into the horizon.
"So now our real adventure begins," Aaron said, as they began to walk east.
"I hope nothing bad happens…" Megan said quietly. Riley put his arm around the Jupiter adept as they walked.
"Don't worry, nothing can stop us!" Riley said happily. The Jupiter adept looked forward, and felt her face get hot.
Aaron stared at her and smiled, as the group continued in silence towards the eastern harbour.
