I've came to the realization that this story will probably exceed 25 chapters, unlike I had originally planned. I'm now looking in between 30 to 40, maybe even 50. I really want to have more time to explain things while also making the story more detailed so each character can develop more. I mean, we still have not hit the main plotline as of yet, nor has the climax has emerged!
DISCLAIMER: I do not own Warriors or any of the cannon cats.
Just the dramatic plot ;D
Well I'll be Doggone Chapter 15
"Are they going to be alright?"
"Have any of them woken up?"
"Surely they won't...die...w-will they?"
"Alright, alright. They won't recover faster, no matter how much you pester me! For the love of Starclan, all of you, please get out of my den!"
"Well, I'm not leaving until I know she's okay!"
"Fine, but just don't get in my way!"
Bramblepaw awoke to hearing muffled voices around him. Ear-splitting pain shot through his head as the young warrior tried to sit up, but immediately flopped back down. The apprentice bared his teeth and scrunched his face up at the unbearable feeling. It literally felt like some cat was repetitively banging his head against bare rock. Shaking his throbbing head, the brown tabby tom tried to get up again.
"Oh! Bramblepaw, you're awake!"
"W...whaz...happendz..?" His words came out slurred and mixed up just as he was opening his eyes. Bramblepaw could see that he was inside the medicine cat den, for it smelled of herbs and there was Cinderpelt sitting off in the corner busily chewing up leaves. She looked strained and distraught, for her eyes glimmered with uncertainty. Suddenly, Bramblepaw had remembered that there was a battle with Shadowclan and some powerful cat had knocked him out.
"Baddle with s...Shadowclan!" The apprentice yelled, springing up and not caring anymore about this throbbing head. "Where are they? Did we win? How is everyone? Where's Petalstorm? Where is she?! Is she oka-" Cinderpelt practically threw her tail over Bramblepaw's mouth to silence him.
"For the love of mice in Greenleaf, as if I don't have enough to deal with already! Just shut your trap, I'm trying my hardest!" The gray medicine cat growled. Bramblepaw noticeably flinched at the she-cat's sudden temper. It was rare to see Cinderpelt with this type of demeanor, which she probably picked up from her old mentor, Yellowfang. The handicapped medicine cat went back to work by placing the chewed up leaves on some brown cat that Bramblepaw at first didn't recognize.
"She's still bleeding Cinderpelt! The cobwebs aren't holding!" Skyfall wailed on the other side of the brown cat. Bramblepaw didn't even notice the blue-gray tabby there, for he was silhouetted in the shadows.
"Take that moss over there and apply it to the wounds. Keep your paws on so there's pressure." Cinderpelt told the warrior as she put the last of the chewed leaves on the fallen cat. Skyfall obeyed without a second thought and pressed his moss-coated-paws to the cats' flank.
"Come on Honeyfern..." Skyfall cried. "Stay with us...with me..." Bramblepaw felt his mouth drop in astonishment.
That's Honeyfern...? Great StarClan, she looks awful...
Honeyfern was covered in blood-stained cobwebs and sticky green goo from the leaves. She had a heavy gash sprouting from her ear, which appeared to be only hanging on by a thread. Cobwebs were put into place, but they seemed to be doing little to nothing. Her pelt was far from the usual sleek look she always sported. Her eyes were clamped shut and her brows were furrowed. Clumps of matted, bloody fur hung of in all directions. She looked downright terrible. Suddenly, Honeyfern went into a heavy coughing fit that rocked her body back and forth as she fought for breath.
"Cinderpelt! Do something! Please!" Skyfall begged, looking at the medicine cat with pleading eyes. The gray she-cat said nothing and her expression was unreadable, for she had her eyes glued on her paws that were pressed to Honeyfern's flank.
Honeyfern was dying and as much as Cinderpelt didn't want to admit it, there was nothing she could do.
"S-Sky...fall..." Honeyfern mewed, struggling to lift her head to see her best friend. Skyfall bent down in response and licked her cheek, slowly, gently, affectionately.
"Yes, my dear?" He whispered after a while. "Don't worry, you're gonna be fine. Cinderpelt will have you fixed up in no time," Honeyfern gave a hoarse laugh that was in reality more cough than what it was intended to be.
"Skyfall...Don't lie...to y-yourself..." The brown she-cat choked out. Skyfall let out a strange yelp, similar to what you would hear from a kit than from a warrior. Shuffling so that their flanks were touching, the blue-gray warrior buried his head in the matted scruff of his friend. All that was heard were stifled sniffles coming from Skyfall as his whole body trembled with fear.
"It's going to...be o-okay..." Honeyfern inched closer to Skyfall. Suddenly, the golden brown she-cat went into another coughing fit that was worse than the last. "It's...my t-time to go...now," She grunted between gasping breaths. Cinderpelt and Bramblepaw exchanged sorrowful glances and then looked back at Honeyfern and Skyfall. The crippled gray medicine cat removed her paws from Honeyfern's flank and bent down to lick her better ear.
"You were an amazing warrior Honeyfern. StarClan will welcome to you with open paws," Cinderpelt murmured, her eyes clouded with sadness. Bramblepaw then took a step forward and rested his nose on the dying she-cat's muzzle. Honeyfern had been a good friend to Bramblepaw, to everyone for that matter. There was no one that disliked having her around, save from Fuzztail or Tawnypaw, but they didn't count. The brown apprentice recalled all the good times he and his friends were 'paws, well just them because he was still a 'paw.
"You shall suffer no more when you get to StarClan," Bramblepaw uttered, his voice slightly cracking with anguish. All Honeyfern could do was look at her friends with her dark-brown eyes in response. Skyfall slowly licked Honeyfern on her cheek once again before sitting up beside her. With his head still hung low, he gently whispered something in Honeyfern's good ear that Cinderpelt and Bramblepaw couldn't quite catch. Instead, they watched as Honeyfern's eyes went wide and a small, fragile smile made its way onto her face.
"I...love you too..." The honey-colored she cat whispered to Skyfall before closing her brown eyes. Her smile slowly faded away and her flanks soon ceased to rise up and down. The remaining three cats in the den hung their heads low to the earth. After a couple of moments, Bramblepaw got up and padded his way out of the den. He needed some fresh air, for this was the first time he'd experienced the death of someone close to him and it was hard for him to take in. Pushing his way past the lichen screen, the brown apprentice found himself looking into a quiet ThunderClan. It was still night time, but Bramblepaw could see that dawn was on the horizon, for the bottom of the sky was tainted with light pink. The stars were still visible and Bramblepaw thought he saw one twinkle at him. Was that Honeyfern? Did she find her way up into StarClan? He sure hoped so. Suddenly, Bramblepaw found his muzzle buried in a thick mass of fur. He was so lost in thought that he didn't realize that he was about to run into some cat.
"S-sorry..." Bramblepaw muttered looking up to the cat he ran into. The apprentice felt his fur bristle as he saw who it was. A pale-red, untamed pelted tom stood before him.
"Hi Fuzztail..." Bramblepaw sighed, he wasn't in the mood to fight or hear insults from the warrior, but as time passed, nothing came."Errr..."
"Hey Bramblepaw..." Fuzztail muttered, his eyes shifting from his paws to the brown apprentice before him. "Did you-uhhh... how are your wounds?" Bramblepaw ran a paw over his tender head, his ears flattened slightly at the awkward feeling radiating off from the conversation.
"They're alright I guess," He replied, kneading his paws through the soft grass. Bramblepaw didn't know how else to respond.
"Err...That's good to hear," The pale-red warrior replied. Fuzztail glanced at the medicine cat den, which was a good couple of rabbit hops away, and then back at Bramblepaw. "How's Honeyfern?" Bramblepaw shook his head, amber eyes filled with sorrow.
"She..." But Bramblepaw never got to finish his thought, for he was interrupted by an ear-splitting yowl that made the apprentice cringe.
"My kit! Oh my poor kit!" Both toms turned their heads to see Puddlestep racing toward the medicine cat den just as Skyfall and Cinderpelt were pulling Honeyfern's body to the clearing for her vigil. Branchfoot was right behind his mate as his daughter was laid gently down with her paws tucked neatly under her. All the blood was gone and if any cat didn't know better, they would say that she'd appeared to be sleeping.
"Ohh..." Fuzztail muttered in a tone that Bramblepaw had only heard him use with Tawnypaw. A couple of mouse length's beside Honeyfern, Bramblepaw noticed that another cat was laying in the clearing.
Oh no... Not Sunheart as well...
Sunheart, the golden warrior with a white muzzle had went to go join StarClan as well. His father, Firestar, and his mother, Sandstorm, sat on opposite sides of him. When the ThunderClan leader saw Cinderpelt, Skyfall and Honeyfern's parents approach with the brown she-cat, he nodded in understanding, his green eyes overflowing with deep sadness.
"And Petalstorm?" Fuzztail continued with a very faint hint of worry in his tone. Bramblepaw cuffed himself inwardly. Why did the white and pale-red she-cat always slip his mind at the most important of times?
"I dunno. I haven't seen her since the battle," Bramblepaw admitted, hanging his head low. "Is she okay?" Fuzztail grunted with annoyance and rolled his eyes.
"That's why I asked you, bees-for-brains," The warrior replied, his whiskers twitching. Letting out a heavy sigh, he looked at Bramblepaw. "The last I saw her, she was in the back of the medicine cat den, you know, that one small pod behind Cinderpelt's herb shelves. She was alive but...she hasn't woken up since she was knocked out." Bramblepaw felt a chill ride though his spine. If Petalstorm hasn't woken up since the battle, then that must have meant that the cat who delivered the blow wasn't kidding around. He really had intended to kill them both off.
"If I ever find out who did this to her, I'll shred him!" Bramblepaw growled, flexing his claws in and out.
"I have my suspicions and I think-"
"There you are Fuzztail!" The pale-red warrior was interrupted as Tawnypaw came bounding up next to him, burying her head in his wild pelt. "I was so worried that I would have to sit vigil for you. It's bad enough with Sunheart gone." She fretted as Fuzztail pushed her gently off of with his nose.
"And Honeyfern too," Bramblepaw put in, dismayed that Tawnypaw had left out one of her fallen clanmates. The tortoiseshell she-cat glared at him.
"Mind your own business!" She yowled. "I was going to include her if you hadn't interrupted me!"
"Just shut up! Great StarClan, why are you always so stupidly annoying?!" And with that Tawnypaw turned and stomped off, gesturing with her tail for Fuzztail to follow. The pale-red warrior gave Bramblepaw an hard stare before padding after the enraged she-cat. Left feeling confused and insulted, Bramblepaw let out an exhausted sigh.
What in StarClan's name was that all about?
Shaking his physically and emotionally hurting head, Bramblepaw trudged back over to the medicine cat den. He had to see Petalstorm. Pushing his way through the vine screen, Bramblepaw once again found himself surrounded with the scent of herbs and berries.
"Fuzztail said behind the herb shell so it- oh!" Bramblepaw twitched his ears in anticipation as he found the hole in the wall. Lichen was covering the entrance, so the brown apprentice poked his nose though on to the other side. What he saw next made his heart drop. Petalstorm was laying on her side in a moss and leaf covered nest. Her eyes were shut and her face was expressionless. Petalstorm only indication of life was the slow, barely visible rise and fall motion of her flanks. Fully pushing his way into the small den, Bramblepaw bent down beside the white and pale-red she-cat and gently nudged her ear with his nose.
"Please get better soon," He whispered, not caring about the fact that she couldn't hear him. Suddenly a very loud, alarmed yowl sounded from outside in the clearing. Bramblepaw jumped up and hit the top of his head on the low roof of the den.
"FOX-DUNG!" Bramblepaw cursed as pain swelled to his tender head. The apprentice gripped his head with his paws, gritted his teeth and impatiently waited for the terrible sensation to subside. After a couple of moments, it did so and Bramblepaw sat back up and drew his tongue over his ruffled fur.
"Sorry Petalstorm..." He muttered, feeling ashamed that he had disrupted the sleeping she-cat. "But what in the name of Greenleaf was that all about?" Taking one last glance at the resting warrior, Bramblepaw padded out of the den and made his way into the clearing of the ThunderClan camp. What he saw shocked him. Cats were bristling and spitting as a brown, black and white figure stepped out from the gorse tunnel.
