The cloudless blue sky's blurred into the horizon where the hot air twists masking the beige building nestled in the pale yellow sand. The electric fencing push into the cracked dehydrated earth surrounded the long, squat building. Patrols of sweaty men in army gear marched around the perimeter automatic weapons charged and loaded held in a casual position as they peered across the empty desert land, some of the men lead large dogs sniffing the ground for hints of foreign scents, occasionally sneezing when dust got into their noses. A light green jeep pulled up to the gate stationed to the far right if the fence. A slender clothed arm passed an ID to the guard sat in the little hut. He glanced at it then smiled and the red and white striped bar raised permitting the woman to pass through. The automatic doors of the bunker opened and a tall blonde man in his late-twenties stepped into the brilliant sunlight. His face was decorated with battle scars. He smiled warmly at the beautiful blonde woman who climbed out of the jeep. She wore a dark red blouse, pencil skirt and black jimmy choo heels. She pulled her curtain of shiny gold hair into a bun on the top of her head. The young man, dressed in army uniform, stepped forward eagerly to greet her.
"Major Jasper Whitlock, Ma'am." Jasper took the woman's hand and gently kissed the back.
"Rosalie Hale." she replied back swooning slightly at his handsome face and Southern drawl.
"I didn't expect the Minister of Defence to be so young or a girl." Jasper remarked with admiration.
"Yes well, hard work pays off." Rosalie said.
Jasper smiled politely I bet she slept with her boss, took Rose's arm and led her into the air conditioned building. Inside they were greeted with more unpleasant looking men standing along the walls, Rosalie looked behind her when the doors closed and the sunlight was blocked off the sudden feel of claustrophobia washed over her. The long corridor had many wooden doors leading off to bathrooms, bedrooms and living areas that the army men stayed in.
"Of course you know that you can't tell anyone about what I'm going to show you," Jasper reminded. "Half the men here don't know what is behind that door." he motioned to the thick steel door at the end if the long room. It had a key pad to the right, very much like ones Rosalie had seen in films.
"Yes, yes I know the drill. You said this was a probable threat to mankind!"
"Of course." jasper nodded.
He headed over to the door, punched in the complicated code. Rosalie tried to remember what she saw 4726J5D78… but it was useless. The lock on the door clicked, and slowly opened. Behind it was a large room full of people in lab coats bustling around between tables that held test tubes and high tech computers. A small woman, wearing the same lab coats as the others, walked coward and greeted the two newest arrivals into the room.
"Hi I'm Maria, head scientist here." The woman said. She was very pretty in an exotic way with her long dark hair pulled up into a high pony tail. Maria smiled warmly at Jasper, her dark eyes twinkling. He smiled back putting his arm around her waist and waking toward a door in the far left of the room. Rosalie followed.
"'Bout 30 years ago the American Government, somewhat acquired a human anomaly that had been locked away in numerous secret laboratories all over the world. We brought it here to perform tests, try to find a cure. Before, it could affect other people." Jasper explained
The group reached the door. It was smaller and less heavily guarded that the main, to the secret labs. Jasper took a single key from his pocket and put it into one of the two locks, the kind that are usually on house doors. Maria then did the same and turned both. They proceeded down the steps that where in front of them.
"I was just 23 when I first saw it, got promoted. Put in charge of this hell hole," he continued "there are things you just can't un-see."
"If you've had this thing for 30 years, why am I just hearing about it now?" Rosalie asked.
"Need to know," Jasper said simply, Maria nodded. "It's getting restless, although we've picked up no brainwaves from it. We fear it may be planning something." although Rosalie still didn't know what this 'anomaly' was she was getting anxious and her fear was growing.
"Well after you." Maria said pushing the next door open.
Rosalie stepped inside, the smell of rotten meat hit her and the hot air made her head swim and skin crawl. The dim lighting had a strange green glow. Metal prison bars stretched from the far left side of the room to the right. The bars were aged and rusted in places, they had several bit marks crushing the metal, a huge single padlock held the door closed. But nothing, at all could have prepared herself for what was stood behind the bars.
Stood to the back of the 'cage' was a human shaped figure. Except when it slowly limped, dragging one leg at a slightly bent angle behind him, into the light. Rosalie could hardly hold back a scream. The man's skin was green; it was dripping off the skull so bits of bone and muscle could be seen. Bags of skin sagged around the yellow eyes allowing Rosalie to see the whole round shape as it rolled around. It opened its mouth to revile large jagged, yellowing teeth. The tips of the pointy teeth stained red from blood, a long pale yellow tongue slithered from its mouth.
Jasper and Maria were less interested in the creature and turned to computers sat in the corner. Rosalie turned to them.
"You have a zombie hidden underground! And I didn't know about it!"
Jasper frowned "like I said before need to know," he chuckled "besides I don't think 'zombie' is politically correct. As far as we know he didn't climb out of a grave."
Rosalie however was not smiling like Maria was checking the creatures' vitals at a work station.
"Perhaps we should talk somewhere more… comfortable, besides the smell is getting to me." Jasper didn't wait for Rose's answer and walked past her to the door, expecting her to follow. For a second she considered staying where she was, but one look at the 'zombie' and her mind was made up.
The door slammed shut and the faint clicking of heels could be heard as Rosalie made her way up the stairs. Maria smiled softly to herself while making her way over to the bucket of rotting meat. Just as she advanced her hand forward the zombie lashed out grabbing her hand in one of his, pulling her forward with imminence force. The crazed yellow eyes rolled in their sockets, and the creature bared it's teeth in a hungry half-smile. Maria screamed but her efforts were wasted, she was so far underground that no one would hear her. She felt the razor-sharp fangs penetrate the skin and the lush tearing sound as the creature ripped her hand from her arm, effortlessly. Maria shrieked in agony, blood pouring from the bloody stump that had become her arm. Crimson pooled at her feet, splattered her tanned face and artfully painted the cold, damp stone walls. The creature retreated with Maria's hand, licking up the bloods and devouring the flesh. Maria fell to the ground, tears streaming down her face, her breath ragged. Her vision clouded and a thick fog swarmed in her mind. She lay breathing heavily, knowing exactly what was happening. Maria felt a warm shiver go down her spine, and in her last few seconds of moral humanity she thought of her family.
(Now your nightmare comes to life)
Dragged you down below
Down to the devil's show
To be his guest forever
(Peace of mind is less than never)
Hate to twist your mind
But God ain't on your side
An old acquaintance severed
(Burn the world your last endeavour)
Flesh is burning, you can smell it in the air
'Cause men like you have such an easy soul to steal (steal)
So stand in line while they ink numbers in your head
You're now a slave until the end of time here
Nothing stops the madness turning, haunting, yearning, pull the trigger
You should have known
The price of evil
And it hurts to know that you belong here, yeah
It's your fuckin' nightmare
(While your nightmare comes to life)
Can't wake up in sweat
'Cause it ain't over yet
Still dancin' with your demons
(Victim of your own creation)
Beyond the will to fight
Where all that's wrong is right
Where hate don't need a reason
Nightmare – Avenged Sevenfold
