A/N: I had this idea after rewatching American Psycho II, which happens to be one of my absolute favorite movies, and I just had to write it. Anyway, the story takes place shortly after Rossi joined the team. Prentiss decided to quit - which is why Rachael joins the BAU. Oh, one more thing since Rachael is going in this story by the name Lily, that will be how she'll be refered to. Have fun reading!
1. First day
Waking to the sound of her alarm clock Lily kept her eyes closed for another minute or two as she stretched, letting out a soft yawn. As she eventually opened her eyes and sat up a smile appeared on her face. Today was the day - her first day at the BAU.
Still smiling she pushed the comforter off her body and swung her legs over the edge of the bed and moving to get up she took a quick glance at her alarm clock, a satisfied expression appearing on her features. Just as she had planned she had woken up a few hours before she would have to get to work, which meant she would have enough time for a long run and get back early enough to take her time to get ready for work - and still get early to the office.
So she got quickly up and headed to her closet. Opening it she pulled out fresh underwear, a pair of sweat shorts and a sweater. After getting dressed she put on a pair of socks and her running shoes before heading to leave. On her way out she stopped once more in the entry hall, pulling her hair back in a high ponytail then she grabbed her keys, cell and iPod.
A moment later she stepped out the door. While walking slowly the short way to the sidewalk she put the headphones of her iPod in and turned it on, before starting to run.
As she ran through the quiet neighborhood and toward the park Lily started reflecting on the past few years.
Flashback, a bit over 3 years ago:
After she had become an agent in record time she couldn't have been happier, especially after letting Dr Eric Daniels know she was still alive. However, as the triumph started fading away she had started feeling more and more the need to become someone else again. Truth been told she had gotten increasingly annoyed by Elizabeth and frankly she had started getting seriously pissed due to the fact that Elizabeth was getting all the glory for her achievements. So, she'd had to die.
Getting rid of Elizabeth had been beyond easy. In the matter of an hour she'd had worked out a flawless plan. But before putting her plan into action she had made sure to screw up Elizabeth's reputation - well, maybe that had been a little immature, but she simply couldn't stand the thought that Elizabeth would die with a flawless record... Anyway, once that had been accomplished - Elizabeth had gotten suspended and was facing an OPR investigation after screwing up a case, threatening and attacking a suspect in interrogation and killing "accidently" an innocent bystander while pursuing a suspect - she had quickly moved on to the main part of her plan. Agent Elizabeth McGuire's tragic end...
First she got Elizabeth's body - which she had kept for precisely this purpose in the large freezer in her basement - and brought it to the bedroom. Then she scanned her fingerprints in and exchanged the ones saved in her personal file with Elizabeth's - after all, she couldn't have her prints matching Elizabeth's when she went to Quantico, now could she? After that was done too she quickly got a travel-bag and packed it with a bunch of clothes and other neccessities, as well as a rather big, locked box she had already prepared for an eventuality like this and which contained a big amount of cash, documents and a couple of other things she would need to start her new life.
Once she was finished packing she quickly went to the bathroom, changed clothes, pulled her hair back into a messy bun and put on a short blonde wig, before she brought the bag outside, hiding it at the far end of the backyard considering that it would be rather inconvenient to keep it inside until she was done. Then she went back inside and through the house into the garage to get the gasoline. She poured can after can thoroughly over the ground and furniture - which itself was already highly inflammable, just like the material of the floors and wallpaper. She stopped momentarily in the kitchen and turned the gas-stove on so the gas was streaming out, but didn't light it, before continuing on her way to the bedroom. When she had reached her destination and was done pouring gasoline on the furniture of that room as well she poured the last can over Elizabeth's body. A moment later she snapped her lighter open turned it on and moving to leave she threw it on the bed.
Only a moment after she had run out the backdoor and had reached the trees at the edge of her property, where she had already stashed her travel-bag, and had turned back around the house blew up. The sight of the explosion and the huge flames blasting towards the sky caused a smile to form on her face.
She kept standing there for another minute or two, watching the fire, before she quickly picked up her bag and left. For a while she kept walking through the forest, which hugged her backyard, before turning into the direction of the city.
After reaching the city she went to the bus-station and took a bus to New York - after all, what better place to start over than New York? During the ride she opened her shoulder-bag and pulled out her copy of "One in a Billion", a smile tugging on the corners of her mouth as she started reading.
When she had reached her destination she checked in to a small motel. After entering her room and shutting and locking the door she dropped her travel-bag, while pulling with her free hand the wig off. She quickly let her hair down and shook it out, before taking a look around in her room.
Coming to the conclusion that it would suffice for now she started getting settled in. Once she was done she locked the door and got ready for the night, after all, she would be quite busy the coming days so it would be wise to get some good night's sleep.
She got up very early the next morning and after putting the wig back on she went for a run. On her way back she got herself a few newspapers to find out if and what was being published about Elizabeth, though she didn't take time to take a look inside any of them until she was back at the motel.
Once back in her room she went to take a quick shower before sitting down at the desk and starting to check the news. Luckily it seemed like other news had been more relevant than the death of a troubled FBI agent, which would - just like she had intended - be ruled as suicide. For a moment she couldn't help wondering how Daniels would react to the news that Elizabeth McGuire was dead. The thought of his face made her smile.
After going thoroughly through the pages of the newspaper she got started with the preparations for her new life.
The first few days she had barely left her room except to go on long runs and getting the latest newspapers while she was working on the foundation of her new life - her new identity. Unlike with Rachael and Elizabeth she had this time created a whole new persona for herself, instead of taking someone else's identity, after all, the reason why she had decided to get rid of Elizabeth had been that she had wanted it to really be her achievements, successes and glory - her life...
She had already a while ago started thinking about potential names in case she ever decided to start over again and had eventually picked Lily Freeland, Lily because lilies were her favorite flowers, and Freeland because it had been the maidenname of her favorite grandmother, and after she had made that decision she had already started to get anything she would need - she had started taking courses in psychology, criminology and criminal psychology at Columbia University under the name Lily Freeland - though until now she had done so through correspondence courses - the university believed she was forced to stay home due to sickness. Now all she had to do was making sure that her background would be rock solid, which had been rather easy given her knowledge about the system...
When she had been finished she had started preparing to get into Quantico, while continuing her studies, moving into the dorm at Columbia. Only two months later she had graduated early and had applied for the FBI academy at Quantico. She had gotten accepted without any trouble. After graduating 20 weeks later at the top of her class she started working at the New York field office of the FBI. By the first anniversary of her start there she had attained the highest number of solved cases ever reached there. But of course she hadn't let that make her complacent, instead she kept her hard work up, never losing sight of her ultimate goal - getting into the Behavioral Analysis Unit in Quantico, the elite unit specialized on profiling criminals...
Then two months ago she had heard that there was a job opening in the unit and she immediately applied for the position. After her interview with the Unit Chief, Supervisory Special Agent Hotchner, she hadn't been surprised when she had gotten the call that she got the job, never having had a doubt that she would succeed - and this time she had done so without having to go to such lengths as almost five and a half years ago, when she had wanted to become Starkman's TA.
Back at Lily's place:
When she returned from her almost two-hour-long run Lily stopped in the kitchen to get the coffee-maker ready. After turning it on she quickly headed to the bathroom for a shower. On her way she quickly checked the time, relieved to see that she still had over an hour before she would have to leave for work.
Entering the bathroom she pulled the hairband out of her hair and quickly took off her clothes. A moment later she stepped into the shower and turned the water on. For a few minutes she closed her eyes and just enjoyed the warmth of the water, starting to relax.
As she stepped a few minutes later out of the shower Lily quickly wrapped a towel around herself. After she had fastened it around her body she grabbed another, smaller towel, which she wrapped around her hair before loosening the big towel and starting to rub her skin dry. Once she was dry she wrapped the towel back around her, fastened it and headed to her bedroom to get dressed.
After entering her bedroom she went over to the dresser to figure out what to wear. She wanted to make a good impression on her new colleagues, but didn't want to dress too formal. Eventually she opted to dress like she had back in New York - classy, sophisticated, yet still somewhat casual. So she quickly got fresh undies, a matching bra, a red top, a pair of blue jeans and a light, white cardigan and got dressed.
Once she had gotten dressed she went back to the kitchen, smiling as she found the coffee ready. She quickly got a cup and filled it with coffee. After placing her mug on the kitchen island she fixed herself something to eat, before turning and moving to sit down. While eating her gaze fell on Dr Daniels' book, which was still lying on the kitchen island from when she had been reading it - again - during dinner the past night. At the sight her mind drifted momentarily off to the past, to all the people she had killed to get what she had wanted.
Only a moment later she pushed that thought aside. That was all in the past - something that had stopped mattering with Elizabeth's death. Well, except for Bateman, having killed him would always matter, it had showed her her fate, her destiny - stopping others like him... The other people she had killed had been nothing but collateral damage, they had to die so she could meet her fate. However, it was also one of the reasons why she had decided to get rid of Elizabeth - she had wanted a clean slate, she didn't want to have anything to do with the deeds of the girl who had killed Rachael, the real one, or Rachael's deeds, or Elizabeth's, considering that after she had become Elizabeth she had killed her original parents as well as Elizabeth's, just in case... And then, of course, there was Dr Daniels, who knew that Elizabeth had been Rachael. Sure, she could've gotten rid of him too, like all the others who had gotten in her way, but that would have been a shame, considering that she simply craved the knowledge that there was someone who knew that she had commited the perfect crime. Therefore Elizabeth's death was the perfect solution, Daniels knew that Rachael had survived the crash, but she won't have to worry about him anymore...
Shaking slightly her head she took the last bite of her breakfast and emptied her cup, then she picked up the cup and plate and got up. She quickly put both into the sink and cleaned them, before leaving the kitchen and heading to blow-dry her hair.
Once her hair was dry she brushed it through and after a moment of consideration she decided to just leave it down, before putting on some light make-up. A minute or two later she was done and after checking her appearance, and finding herself being satisfied by what she saw, she went to get her things. After checking her overnight-bag and making sure she had her gun and cell she left.
At Quantico, 35 minutes later:
As she drove into the parking-lot of the office Lily quickly searched for a spot to park. Once she had found one she parked and turned off the engine. Already reaching for her stuff on the passenger-seat she took a quick glance in the rearview mirror, checking her appearance, before opening the car door, grabbing her stuff and getting out. Closing the door she locked the car and went to head inside.
Entering the building she identified herself to one of the security guys and received her new ID for the office. After thanking the man she continued on her way, walking over to the elevators. When she had reached them she pressed the button to get it down to the lobby. As it arrived she quickly stepped inside and pushed the button for the floor where the office of the BAU was located.
Watching the numbers change as she was waiting to reach the right floor Lily wondered what her new colleagues would be like. 'Well, I'll know soon enough,' she thought, a slight smile forming on her lips. Only a moment later the elevator stopped with a soft 'ding', announcing that it had reached the desired floor, causing Lily to glance toward the doors, waiting for them to open. When they slid open Lily took a breath, stepped out of the elevator car and walked towards the doors to the bullpen.
Stepping into the bullpen she took a look around as she went further inside the room, studying it once again, more thoroughly than when she had been there for the job interview. Walking over to the small staircase she paused at an empty desk which had a plate with her name on it and put her purse and overnight-bag down, before turning back around and walking up the stairs and the few steps to the door of her new supervisor's office. Stopping in front of it she knocked softly and waited for a response.
Only a second or two had past when she heard him say,
Lily opened the door and stepped into the room. Looking at Hotch she stated,
"You asked me to report to you when I arrive here."
Hotch had looked up from the file he had been reading as the door opened and while Lily was speaking he studied momentarily her face. As she went silent he gave a slight nod and replied,
"Right. Come in, Agent Freeland."
Lily nodded and after closing the door behind her she walked further into the room and over to the desk. Meanwhile Hotch rose from his seat and when she had reached the desk he motioned to the chair in front of the desk and stated,
"Please have a seat." As Lily had taken a seat Hotch sat back down as well and observed,
"You're quite early."
"I thought it would be good to get here early, so I would have a chance to talk with you right away, even if there was already a case." Lily replied, a trace of a smile on her lips.
"Actually there is a case, the briefing will start once the rest of the team has arrived." He paused, his gaze drifting momentarily back to the file he had been studying before she had come in. Looking back at her he stated,
"The reason why I decided to hire you is your impressive background and exceptional expertise. I have no doubt that you are the most qualified agent for this job, however, working here doesn't just require outstanding knowledge of criminal behavior and excellent work in the field but also to work efficiently with the other members of the team and local authorities as well as the ability to handle the emotional strain and stress of the cases we work on. Furthermore you should be prepared to be called in to work at any given time." Letting his words sink in he studied her features, then he added,
"New cases are in general briefed every morning at nine." He paused for a second then he said,
"Welcome to the BAU, Agent Freeland."
Lily smiled and replied,
Hotch gave a nod, before he was able to say anything else there was a knock at the door and looking toward it he stated,
Lily had turned to look at the door as well and as it opened after Hotch's response to the knock she saw a blonde woman come in. The blond smiled slightly and headed further into the room and toward the desk, file in hands. When she had reached the desk she handed the file to Hotch. As he took it and took a glance inside she looked at Lily and said,
"You must be the new agent." Extending a hand to Lily she introduced herself,
"I'm Agent Jennifer Jareau, the office liasion, though feel free to call me JJ."
Shaking the offered hand Lily returned the blond's smile and replied,
JJ nodded knowingly, having read her personal file, but considering that there was a case she didn't comment on it, instead she glanced back at Hotch who had finished looking through the file and meeting her gaze he asked,
"Is everything ready for the briefing?"
JJ gave a nod,
"The others are already waiting in the conference-room."
Hotch nodded and rose from his seat. As he walked around his desk Lily got up as well and they went to leave the office along with JJ. After following the two women out of his office Hotch closed the door before leading the way to the conference-room.
As they entered the conference-room Hotch saw that the others were already going through files about the new case. Apparently having heard them approach Morgan, Reid, Rossi and Garcia looked toward them.
Looking at Lily Hotch introduced them,
"Agent Freeland, these are Special Agent Derek Morgan, our expert in obsessive crimes," While speaking he motioned to each of the agents,
"Special Agent Dr Spencer Reid, Supervisory Special Agent David Rossi, and Penelope Garcia, our tech analyst." Then looking at his team he said,
"This is Special Agent Lily Freeland."
Glancing at her new colleagues Lily smiled and stated,
"It's a pleasure to meet you."
Hotch motioned for her to take a seat and after sitting down as well he started the briefing.
A/N: Thanks for reading! I hope you liked the first chapter. I'm not sure yet when I will update considering that I'm currently working on a lot of different things. In the meantime you could do me a great favor and give me some feedback.
