My Life Inside the Walls

They call me Kale. No one knew my birth name. I didn't even know it, until I met Luther. But the name Kale seemed to suit me. So Kale it is. A last name though, I didn't have. After all, I was just a fourteen-year-old girl living in an orphanage in Lunenburg. But then I met Luther. I should tell you everything from the start. That is why I have written this introduction in my diary so you can know about my life. It all started the night after a huge storm…

April 1 1:31 a.m.

Boom! Crack! I hear Talia, the girl in the bunk below me, let out a whimper. She is afraid of nothing except storms, and this is a bad one. Boom! Boom! Crack! I am sitting up and peering out the window on the other side of the room. I see rain whirling about and smacking the side of the huge wall that surrounds Lunenburg. I see roofing shingles falling from a nearby house. It sure is going to be a mess to clean up in the morning. Well, I should get to sleep.

April 13 7:18 a.m.

I was right about the mess. Flower pots are knocked over, roof shingles are on the ground, and even papers are everywhere. We are being put to work by cleaning it up around the orphanage. Talia is not working very fast because she was too scared to sleep last night. Poor girl.

As I am sweeping I hear singing. It's coming from the town center, which is just down the street. The famous choir is there, and they have decided to do a little surprise concert. Their singing is so beautiful. People leave their houses to come and watch. We stop our work, too. I hum along. It is my dream to be with that group someday. I pick up a broken clay pot as I sing quietly, "Sing we now this joyous song, life is hard but sing along, through the pain and through the storms, we will sing, we will sing and let the dark seem brighter."

Talia walks up to me and tells me that she thought I was in the choir. I laugh. We have to get back to our work.

I think I just saw a man looking at me, but it must have been nothing because he is gone now.

April 13 12:06 p.m.

We have been working hard for hours now and we are taking a lunch break. The choir left a while ago, but the songs are still in my heart.

I think I just saw that man again. I have never seen him before today. Who is he and why is he looking at me? I should investigate? Perhaps if I see him again I will. I have to get back to work.

April 13 4:57 p.m.

I saw him again. This time he made eye contact with me and I felt like he wanted me to come with him. Of course I couldn't, but I did see where he went. Tonight I suppose I will sneak out through the cellar. We are about to eat dinner so I have to go.
