That was all Daniel Rafferty had to say as he looked at the white stick thrust into his hand. "Probably lucky we got married then, hm?"
"Is that your answer to everything?" asked the hysterical Audrey.
"What can I say?" he replied affably. "I like being married to you."
She just looked at him.
"Are you okay?" he asked, concern now creeping into his voice.
"Yeah," came the trembling reply. "Just never expected to be in a position where this would happen."
He rose from his seat. "Well get used to it," he ordered. "'Cos I'm not going anywhere."
Audrey sniffled as he tugged her into his arms. "Promise."
Daniel tilted her face to his. "I promise."
